15、f a Sectional Committee on the Standardization of Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings, withthe following organizations as joint sponsors: Heating, Piping, and Air Conditioning ContractorsNational Association (later the Mechanical Contractors Association of America, MCAA),Manufacturers Standardization

16、Society of the Valves and Fittings Industry (MSS), and TheAmerican Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Cast iron flanges and flanged fittings arewithin the scope of Subcommittee No. 1 (now Subcommittee A), with standards approved byASA as early as 1928.In 1957, piping components of ductile iron

17、(also called nodular iron and, in Europe, spheroidalgraphite iron) first appeared on the market. Controversy immediately developed over properpressuretemperature ratings, and this was further aggravated by the use of casting patterns forboth gray iron and carbon steel for producing the components.Co

18、nflicting philosophies, which emerged from that controversy, thwarted efforts by MSS todevelop standard practices in the early 1960s; the conflicts persisted during a study of ratings,starting in 1966 by American National Standards Committee B16 (as the Sectional Committeewas called after reorganiza

19、tion of ASA as ANSI). The conflict continued to delay acceptance andapproval of this Standard, which ultimately originated with a draft developed by MSS (takingadvantage of earlier efforts) and submitted to Subcommittee A in 1977. Combining that draftwith the rating basis developed in the B16 Commit

20、tee, the first edition of this Standard wasfound acceptable and was approved by the Standards Committee, cosecretariat organizations,and ANSI, and was published with the designation ANSI B16.42-1979.In 1982, American National Standards Committee B16 was reorganized as an ASME Committeeoperating unde

21、r procedures accredited by ANSI. The 1987 edition of the Standard updated thereferenced standards and specifications, and established U.S. Customary units as the standard.Following approval by the Standards Committee and ASME, ANSI granted its approval as anAmerican National Standard on July 13, 198

22、7, with the new designation ASME/ANSI B16.42-1987.In the 1998 edition of ASME B16.42, reference standards were updated, a quality systemprogram annex was added, and several editorial revisions were made. Following approval byASME B16 Subcommittee B and the B16 Standards Committee, ANSI approved the

23、AmericanNational Standard on November 20, 1998.Metric units were provided as an independent but parallel alternative standard to theU.S. Customary units in the 2011 edition. Following approval by the Standards Committee andthe ASME Board on PTCS, this revision to the 1998 edition of this Standard wa

40、dition reference is identified in the Appendix.2.2 Quality SystemsRequirements relating to the product manufacturersquality system programs are described inNonmandatory Appendix A.2.3 Relevant UnitsThis Standard states values in both SI (Metric) andU.S. Customary units. As an exception, diameters of

41、bolts and flange bolt holes are only expressed in inchunits. These systems of units are to be regarded sepa-rately as standard. Within the text, the U.S. Customaryunits are shown in parentheses or in separate tables thatappear in Mandatory Appendix I. The values stated ineach system are not exact eq

42、uivalents; therefore, it isrequired that each system of units be used indepen-dently of the other. Except for the diameters of boltsand flange bolt holes, combining values from the twosystems constitutes nonconformance with the Standard.2.4 ServiceCriteria for selection of materials suitable for par

43、ticu-lar fluid service are not within the scope of this Standard.12.5 ConventionFor determining conformance with this Standard, theconvention for fixing significant digits where limits(maximum and minimum values) are specified shall beas defined in ASTM E29. This requires that an observedor calculat

44、ed value be rounded off to the nearest unitin the last right-hand digit used for expressing the limit.Decimal values and tolerances do not imply a particularmethod of measurement.2.6 Denotation2.6.1 Pressure Rating Designation. Class, followedby a dimensionless number, is the designation forpressure

45、temperature ratings, as follows:(a) Class 150(b) Class 3002.6.2 Size. NPS, followed by a dimensionless num-ber, is the designation for nominal flange or flangedfitting size. NPS is related to the referenced nominaldiameter, DN, used in metric units. The relationship istypically as follows:NPS DN1251

47、maximumallowable working pressures, expressed as gage pres-sure, at the service temperature from 29C (20F) to343C (650F). 48、y Appendix I.(11)(11)(11)ASME B16.42-20113.2 Ratings of Flanged JointsRatings in this Standard apply to flanged joints thatconform to the limitations on bolting in para. 6.2 andon gaskets in para. 7.8, and which are made up in accor-dance with good practice for alignment and assembly.See also para.

49、3.4.Use of the ratings for flanged joints not conformingto these limitations is the sole responsibility of the user.A flanged joint is composed of separate and indepen-dent, although interrelated, components: the flanges, thegasket, and the bolting, which are assembled by anotherinfluence, the assembler. Proper controls must be exer-cised in the selection and application for all these ele-ments to attain a joint that has acceptable leak tightness.Special techniques, such as controlled bolt tightening,are described in ASME PCC-1.If the two flanges in a fl
