Cast iron flanges and flanged fittings arewithin the scope of Subcommittee No. 1 (now Subcommittee A), with standards approved byASA as early as 1928.In 1957, piping components of ductile iron
17、(also called nodular iron and, in Europe, spheroidalgraphite iron) first appeared on the market. Controversy immediately developed over properpressuretemperature ratings, and this was further aggravated by the use of casting patterns forboth gray iron and carbon steel for producing the components.Co
18、nflicting philosophies, which emerged from that controversy, thwarted efforts by MSS todevelop standard practices in the early 1960s; the conflicts persisted during a study of ratings, starting in 1966 by American National Standards Committee B16 (as the Sectional Committeewas called after reorganiza

The conflict continued to delay acceptance andapproval of this Standard, which ultimately originated with a draft developed by MSS (takingadvantage of earlier efforts) and submitted to Subcommittee A in 1977. Combining that draftwith the rating basis developed in the B16 Commit

Proper controls must be exer-cised in the selection and application for all these ele-ments to attain a joint that has acceptable leak tightness.Special techniques, such as controlled bolt tightening, are described in ASME PCC-1.If the two flanges in a fl
