、Designation: C1403 06C1403 12Standard Test Method forRate of Water Absorption of Masonry Mortars1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C1403; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision.

、A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope*1.1 This test method covers a standardized laboratory procedure for determining the relative water absorption by capillaryuptake (wickin

、g) characteristics of masonry mortars. This test method is not applicable for determining the effectiveness of waterrepellent coatings.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The inch-pound units given in parentheses are forinformation only.No other units of measurement

、 are included in this standard.1.2.1 Inch-pound units are given in parentheses for temperature specification and are for information only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. Because the specimens are made under laboratory conditions and do not take into accountthe effect of the masonry substrate or field mixing procedures, this method is not intended for field use. However, use caution in interpreting the results. While the resistanceof masonry to water penetration ma

Record the type and amount of each material by weightused in the mortar. In addition, record the type and amount by weight or volume o

、pared in 6.1 and the molds shall be as specified in 5.3. Make a minimum of three replicate specimens from each mortar batch.6.3 Immediately upon completion of casting, place the test specimens in a moist closet or moist room conforming to therequirements of Specification C511. Keep all test specimen

Mark the side of each specimen indicatingwhich surface is top, as cast.

、 Cure the specimens in a moisture tight plastic bag at 24 6 8C (75 6 15F) for a total 28 days fromthe time of casting.6.5 At the age of 28 days 6 12 h from the time of casting, remove the specimens from the plastic bag and dry in a ventilatedoven at 110 to 115C (230 to 240F) for not less than 24 h a

、nd until two successive weighings at intervals of 2 h show an incrementof loss not greater than 0.2 % of the last previously determined weight of the specimen. Remove the specimens from the oven andcool in ambient conditions (24 6 8C (75 6 15F) and a relative humidity of less than 80 % for a minimum

、 of 2 h and until thespecimens reach ambient temperature. Begin testing within 24 h after reaching ambient temperature.7. Procedure7.1 Calculate the area of the test surface for each specimen from the length and width of the test surface. The test surface isthe top face of the cube, as cast. Using c

、alipers, measure the length of the cube test surface to the nearest 0.5 mm at three locationsC1403 122along its height and record as L1 the average length in millimetres to the nearest 0.5 mm. Using calipers, measure the width ofthe cube test surface to the nearest 0.5 mm at three locations along it

、s height and record as L2 the average width in millimetresto the nearest 0.5 mm.7.2 Record as W0 the initial weight in grams to the nearest 0.1 g of each individual specimen immediately prior to testing.7.3 Place the uptake container on a flat level surface. Place all specimens in the uptake contain

、er(s) with their top faces, as cast,in contact with the specimen supports as illustrated in Fig. 1. Provide a minimum space of 12 mm between specimens and 25 mmbetween specimens and the wall of the uptake container.7.4 Add room temperature (24 6 8C (75 6 15F) water to the uptake container(s) so that

、 the specimens are partially immersedin 3.060.5 mm (0.1260.02 in.) of water. When adding water make sure not to splash water onto the specimens. Cover the uptakecontainer(s) to minimize evaporation.7.5 Monitor the specimens during the first 1 min and after 5 6 1 min to make sure the water level is ad

、equate during the initialabsorption phase. Add water as necessary to maintain the immersion depth as specified in 7.4. When adding water make sure notto splash water onto the specimens. Cover the uptake container(s) to minimize evaporation.7.6 At 0.25, 1, 4, and 24 h, measure the weight in grams to

、the nearest 0.1 g of each specimen and record as WT where T isthe measurement time in hours. Wipe off surface water from each specimen with a damp cloth prior to each weighing (see Note12). Complete the wipe within 10 s of removal from contact with the water and complete weighing within 1 min.NOTE 2

、The wipe-off cloth should be damp enough so it does not wick water off the specimen surface but not so damp that it is dripping water.Experience has shown that the cloth may need to be wrung out every 8 to 12 cubes to keep it from getting too wet.7.7 After each weighing, replace the specimens into t
