14、 Culture As a Barrier to Communication Good morning, everyone. In this lecture, I am going to lead you to the discussion of cultural barriers and their solutions. I am sure that each of us is exposed to people from other cultures on a regular basis, in the workplace, in our social activities, at sch

15、ool, or even within our families. Our culture hinders us from getting our message across as well as receiving the full message that others want to convey to us. This talk expounds on three aspects: what culture is, the main causes for cross-cultural misunderstandings, and the attitudes and skills th

16、at we need to communicate cross-culturally. First of all, lets talk about what culture is. When we think about culture we first think about a country,1and particularly about its food, art, customs, and patterns of behavior. These are the outward manifestations of a system of values, assumptions, and

17、 deeply rooted beliefs. Culture emerges as a group of people meet and then react to the challenges of life. The responses to those challenges that are successful are taught and shared among members of the group and are passed on from the older to the younger members. Culture is then learned through

18、experience. You can think of culture as having three levels: first, the top level is the outward manifestations, the artifacts:1visible behavior, art, clothing and so on;2second, in the middle level are the values. These are invisible rules that cause the artifacts; thirdly, the most powerful dimens

19、ion of culture is the implicit cultural assumptions. These assumptions lie so deep that they are never questioned, stated or defended. 3Culture also exists among Americans, but what are the implicit cultural assumptions of Americans? Some of the most distinctive characteristics of the American cultu

20、re are: individualism, equality, competition, personal control of the environment, self-help concept, action orientation, informality, directness, practicality, materialism, and problem-solving orientation. These American values and deeply rooted beliefs are very different from other countrys values

21、 and beliefs. The implicit cultural assumptions of Americans are often opposed to those of other cultures. When individuals from different cultures run into each others values and beliefs, cross-cultural misunderstandings take place. Now, lets talk about the main causes for cross-cultural misunderst

22、andings. People constantly interact with people who have similar views and who reinforce their beliefs.4To be able to distinguish between the in-group and the out-group is of central importance for individuals because it allows them to find who they are and who they are not. In the book entitled Cro

23、ss Cultural Encounters, Brislim states: “If individuals have out-groups whom they can blame for troubles, the in-group is then solidified since there is a common goal around which to rally.“ Later on he says: “Individuals become accustomed to reacting in terms of in-group and out-group. They continu

24、e to use such distinctions when interacting with people from other cultures whom they do not know.“ This in-group/out-group distinction provides us with the basis for ethnocentrism,5which is the tendency to interpret and to judge all other groups, their environment, and their communication according

25、 to the categories and values of our own culture. We are guilty of ethnocentrism when we hold that our view of the world is the right one, the correct one, and the only one. We are all familiar with stereotyping, which is one of the most serious problems in intercultural communication.6Our tendency

26、to hold beliefs about groups of individuals based on previously formed opinions, perceptions, and attitudes is often a defense mechanism, a way of reducing anxiety. 7There are many other causes of cross-cultural misunderstanding: lack of trust, lack of empathy, and the misuse of power. All of us kno

27、w what they are about and the turmoil that they cause. But, how can we do a better job at communicating among cultures? This is actually the last part of my talk. The same skills that we need to communicate in general apply to cross-cultural communication. Lets look at some of those skills: 1.8Know

28、yourself: Identify your attitudes, your opinions, and the biases that we all carry around. Identify your likes, your dislikes, your prejudices, and your degree of personal ethnocentrism. 2.9Take time: Listen to the other person and allow him or her to accomplish their purpose. Dont jump to conclusio

29、ns. Sometimes we finish the thoughts and ideas of the other person before he or she has finished talking.10In some cultures, non-verbal styles call for periods of silence and long pauses. 3. Encourage feedback: Feedback allows communicators to correct and adjust messages.11Without feedback we cannot

30、 have agreement. First we must create an atmosphere where others are encouraged to give us feedback.12Again, dont be afraid of silence. It could be the appropriate feedback at times. 4.13Develop empathy: The greater the difference between us and others, the harder it is to empathize. To develop empa

31、thy we must put ourselves in the other persons place.14By becoming more sensitive to the needs, values, and goals of the other person, we overcome our ethnocentric tendencies. 5.15Seek the commonalities among diverse cultures: Despite our cultural differences we are all alike in many ways.15We need

32、to seek that common ground to establish a bond between ourselves and the rest of humanity. All right. I think I have covered the three main parts of my talk. Finally, I would like to reiterate that although our own ethnocentrism might have hindered us from getting to know people from other cultures,

33、 let us be more than ever committed to helping ourselves and others overcome the barrier that culture creates. 40、ing up? Are you nervous about how it will go? Most people dont give much thought to the actual cross cultural communication process prior to their first real cross cultural negotiation. They get obsessed with secondary details. Imagine you are in a long line of people waiting for a taxi at the busy

41、Paris airport, with people swarming everywhere. The noise of the street traffic is competing with the noise from the airplanes in the background. And then you hear such a large commotion, right up at the front of your taxi line. You think it is yet another bomb scare and crane your neck to get a clo

42、ser look with your bags in your hands ready to move. But out of the confusion you hear laughter. What happened? It was only someone who began to try bargaining the price of his ride before he got inside the taxi. with a Parisian taxi driver. The tension breaks as a ripple of laughter mixed with anno

43、yance runs down the taxi line. It is an old story. But it does highlight cultural differences in negotiation very well. Today I am going to address several points about cross culture negotiation. 1First of all, I want you to know that different cultures have different negotiation practices. Negotiat

44、ion practices differ from country to country. Some cultures expect clients to negotiate over things that would be totally unacceptable in other countries. Some cultures get upset or angry by things that are totally acceptable in other cultures. Different cultures simply have different approaches whe

45、n it comes to negotiation. This can be intimidating when you travel to a new country to negotiate for business. And even more so if it is your first time. It is important to know what is culturally expected of you when it comes to negotiation.2If you are just starting out in developing your internat

46、ional markets, it is wise to do some homework and identify the standard expected negotiating habits in the country you are travelling to. No matter how much research you do prior to your first cross cultural negotiation communication road blocks can easily come up. This is even more likely if your n

47、egotiation is taking place in a foreign environment to what you are used to.3So it is even more important to develop skills to ride through communication hurdles. 4Now, let me give you a beginners guideline for cross cultural negotiation. Prior to your first cross cultural negotiation give some thou

48、ght on how you will keep on track. Here is a guideline to help beginners. If you find yourself on your own in a country where negotiation practices are different to your own, there is a strategy to follow. Do your research on what will be expected of you.5Define your schedule, and what you are expected to wear and bring.6If you are a woman, be sure to verify standard practices beforehand.
