8、at campus life would be like in a world so different from your high school, and in a world and living situation so different from that of your family home. 2I hope you will come to understand the most important about this university that it is a center of new and original ideas. And it is ideas that

9、 are ultimately most important in this world. I read this summer about how the great jurist, Oliver Wendell Holmes said that he had been “set on fire in his freshman year by reading the essays of Emerson.“ If I had but one wish for each of you, it is that in the years ahead you be set on fire, that

10、your mind be captured by some set of external questions, by some area of human understanding; that you develop a passion for understanding, for progressing, that is so central to successful people everywhere. This University and its faculty have no more important goal than helping you in this quest.

11、 How? Its hard to say. Fires cant be controlled. Passions cant be predicted or planned. You are all different. But I give this advice: 3First, follow your passion, not your calculation. What you will remember of your time here will be the special experiences, the things that really catch your imagin

12、ation. 4Choose courses that cohere. Follow a program towards your objectives. 5But most importantly, do what catches your imagination. If there is something you really want to do, some curiosity that you want to pursue, make sure that you do it, and dont let anything stand in your way. 6Second, appr

13、oach to the faculty. 7There is no more important responsibility for any of us as members of the faculty than teaching and working with you, the students of Harvard College. One of the former young men I guess hes middle-aged now whos now one of the stars of our Economics Department, was at one time

14、a sophomore at Harvard College. He approached me and said, “Professor Summers, the paper you wrote is really quite good, but it has a few mistakes. Id like a job as a research assistant.“ That led to an enormously productive relationship for both of us. 8But I promise you that you will find faculty

15、very willing to respond to your interests, to your curiosity, and to your invitations. Do not feel that you are ever wasting anyones time pursuing your curiosity or your interest. That is what we are all here for. 9The last thing I would say is focus on ideas. This is an extraordinary, rich, and div

16、erse community. There are enormous opportunities of all kinds extracurricular, athletic, social. Those experiences will have a huge impact on many of you. But I hope that none of you will lose sight of how special this time in your life is. Its a time to learn. 10Its a time to expose yourself, as yo

Theres a textbook, 5Peter Grays Psychology, 5th edition, and 6theres also a collection of short readings. Its an excellent textbook; its an excellent collection,

26、 and you should get them both. Theyre available at Labyrinth bookstore on York Street or you get them online. 7The evaluation goes like this. There is a Midterm and there is a Final. The Final will not be held in the exam period, because I like to take long vacations. 8It will be held on the last da

27、y of class. 9The exams will be multiple choice and short answer, fill-in the blank, that sort of thing. Prior to the exams I will post previous exams online, so you have a feeling for how these exams work and so on. There will also be review sessions. Starting at the beginning of the third week of c

28、lass, on each Monday Im going to put up a brief question or set of questions, which you have to answer and your answers need to be sent to your teaching fellow. And youll be given a teaching fellow, assigned one, by Friday. Now, this is a large class, and if you dont do anything about it, it can be

But what I would suggest you do is to establish some contact with us, either with me or with any of the teaching fellows, and Ill introduce the teaching fellows sometime next week.
