I

4、n 1980, the percentage was 15.5%. This then rose to 16.5% in 1981, the highest point during the period shown on the chart. The percentage then fell to 14.5% in 1982 where it remained in 1983. The percentage fell again between 1983 and 1986 (11.5%), before rising slightly to 12% in 1987. The percenta

5、ge stayed at this level until 1989. From 1989 to 1991, the percentage of income saved rose to 13.5%. Between 1991 and 1996, the percentage fell fairly constantly to 8%. Thereafter, there was a slight rise to 10% in 1998, before the percentage fell to 5.5% in 2001, the lowest point over the period sh

6、own in the chart. Between 2001 and 2003, the percentage of household income saved by Hong Kong residents rose to 7%. When we talk of environmental pro

8、blems, we talk of a wide range of issues including poilution and species extinction. Although other environmental issues are important, I think that the problem of pollution is the greatest, because it is the main cause of global warming, which in turn creates numerous other environmental problems.

9、Pollution also causes health problems for people that are expensive for individuals and governments to deal with. In order to reduce pollution, we can either ban the use of fossil fuels or increase their price. Banning them is not a good idea. In the short-term, it would leave us without energy and

10、this would undoubtedly result in economic chaos. Even in the medium term it would be a serious problem, since it is not currently Possible to completely replace fossil fuels with “green“ ones. For example, replacing petrol-driven cars with ones using electricity produced using “green“ forms of energ

11、y is possible, though it would take years to achieve. However, there is currently no suitable replacement for using oil to power aircraft. By increasing the price of fossil fuels, we can enable change to take place. With the increase in the price of fossil fuels, “green“ energy sources will become m

12、ore attractive financially. We can see this happening at the moment. In recent years, the price of oil has risen, making “green“ energy relatively less expensive. This has led many companiesincluding oil companies to look more closely at ways of generating green energy and using it, for example, in cars. Therefore, I believe that increasing the cost of fuel is the biggest step we can take towards aiding the environment.
