6、t3. Summary of Test Method3.1 A sample of emulsified asphalt is placed in an opensample tray with an appropriate liquid transfer device capableof handling 1- to 3-mL sample sizes. The sample is heated toa preset temperature as required by emulsion type but neverexceeding 163C to determine the percen

7、tage of asphaltresidue.4. Significance and Use4.1 This test is used to indicate the compositional charac-teristics of emulsified asphalt and is applicable to anionicemulsified asphalts as described in Table 1 of SpecificationD977 and cationic emulsified asphalt as described in Table 1 ofSpecificatio

8、n D2397 except solvent-containing emulsions. Theresidue obtained from this test method may also be subjected torheological characterizations.5. Apparatus5.1 Glass Rods, with flame-polished ends used for stirringthe emulsion as described in Test Method D6934.5.2 Moisture Balance Analyzer, equipped wi

9、th a heatingelement and capable of running either isothermally or in aprogrammable temperature-gradient mode.36. Sample Conditioning for Testing6.1 All emulsified asphalts shall be properly stirred toachieve homogeneity before testing as described in TestMethod D6934.6.2 A minimum of1gandupto3gisuse

10、d to determine theemulsified asphalt residue.7. Calibration and Standardization7.1 Follow the manufacturers guidelines for calibration andstandardization.8. Procedure8.1 Polymer-Modified Emulsified Asphalts8.1.1 Program the moisture analyzer for an isothermal runset for an end temperature of 100C wi

11、th a switch-off criterionof 1 mg for 140 s or higher times for the highest accuracy. Forlower accuracy, set the instrument at 1 mg for 50 s or lowertimes for a faster run. The automatic switch-off criterion is usedto set the instruments sensitivity for higher accuracy (1 mg for140 s or longer times)

16、trument at 1 mg for 50 s or shorter timesfor a faster run and a lower accuracy. Use the switch-offcriterion to set the instruments sensitivity as described aboveto stop the test automatically when the change in weight iswithin 1 mg for 140 s or longer times (higher accuracy) or 1 mgfor 50 s or short

17、er times (lower accuracy).NOTE 1Although this test method is not for solvent-containingemulsions, some guidance is given for practitioners who desire to obtainresidue for emulsions of that type. Program the moisture analyzer to runin the temperature-gradient mode by setting the start temperature at

18、50Cand setting the ramp temperature at 10/min and the end temperature to100C if the emulsion also contains polymer. Set the end temperature to163C if the solvent-containing emulsion does not contain polymer. Inboth cases, set the switch-off criterion to 1 mg for 140 s (see AppendixAppendix X1) or lo

19、nger times for higher accuracy and to 1 mg for 50 s orshorter times if a lower accuracy is desired.9. Calculation9.1 The instrument calculates the residue automatically atthe end of the run. This report can be attached to any other finalreport that is desired. In some cases, a plot of the rate of wa
