Summary of Test Method4.1 A grease sample mixed with a sm

The difference between the conepenetration before working and the cone penetration after isused as a measure of the wet roll stability of the grease.5. Significance and Use5.1 It is known

10、that contamination by water can affect thestructural stability of some greases in service. The test proce-dure specified in this method is widely used to determine thewet structural stability of greases in service. Many greasespecifications require this procedure as a wet structural stabilitytest. N

11、o accurate correlation is established between the testresults and wet structural stability of grease in actual service.6. Apparatus6.1 Roll Stability Test Apparatus, as specified in TestMethod D1831.6.2 Penetrometer and/or One-quarter or One-half ScaleCone and Shaft, as specified in Test Methods D14

Procedure8.1 Determine the worked penetration of the grease to betested in accordance with Test Methods D1403.8.2 Transfer 63.0

16、 g 6 0.2 g of unworked grease to testcylinder. Distribute the grease uniformly on the inside wall ofthe cylinder with a spatula.8.3 Place the weighed roller in the cylinder.8.4 Add 7.0 g 6 0.2 g distilled water to the cylinder, andtighten the cap.NOTE 1The relative amount of grease and water added c

17、an beadjusted to the desired ratio but the total amount of material should bemaintained at 70 g. An example being 56 g of grease, 14 g water wouldequal 20 % water.8.5 Mount the cylinder in position, start the machine, andrecord the time and room temperature which should be limitedto 20 C to 35 C. If

18、 the cylinder is enclosed within a cabinet,the temperature around cylinder shall be maintained at20 C to 35 C.8.6 After rolling the cylinder for 2 h 6 5 min, remove thegrease from the cylinder promptly and proceed with therequirements of worked penetration in Test Methods D1403.Record the worked pen

19、etration. After transferring the grease tothe worker, clean the test apparatus by wiping with clean clothor tissue.8.7 Convert the fractional scale penetration values deter-mined by Test Methods D1403 (before and after test) into theequivalent full scale cone penetration values using the appro-priat

20、e equations described in Test Methods D1403.9. Calculation or Interpretation of Results9.1 Calculate the change in consistency of the sample asfollows:Penetration change 5 P2 2 P1 (1)where:P2 = final full-scale equivalent penetration reading, andP1 = initial full-scale equivalent penetration reading

21、.NOTE 2Penetration reading is measured in tenths of a millimetre. Anegative penetration change indicates hardening of grease while a positivepenetration change indicates softening.10. Report10.1 The value calculated in 9.1 is reported with the testprocedure as the wet shear stability of the grease.
