Scope*1.1 This practice covers the installation of suspended sys-tems for acoustical tile and lay-in panels and their additionalrequirements for two groups of buildings that are constructedto resist the effects of earthquake motions as defined byASCE 7 and the International Build
4、ing Code. These groupingsare for Seismic Design Category C and Seismic DesignCategories D, E and F.1.2 The authority having jurisdiction shall determine theapplicability of this practice.1.3 Specification C635 and Practice C636 cover suspensionsystems and their installation without special regard to
5、 seismiclateral restraint needs. They remain applicable and shall befollowed when this practice is specified.1.4 Ceilings less than or equal to 144 square feet andsurrounded by walls connected to the structure above areexempt from the requirements of this practice.1.5 This practice is not intended t
6、o stifle research anddevelopment of new products or methods. This practice is notintended to prevent the installation of any material or prohibitany design or method of construction not prescribed in thispractice, provided that any such alternative has been substan-tiated by verifiable engineering d
7、ata or full-scale dynamictesting that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction.1.6 Ceiling areas of 1000 ft292.9 m2 or less shall beexempt from the lateral force bracing requirements of 5.2.8.1.7 Ceilings constructed of gypsum board which is screw ornail attached to suspended members that
8、support a ceiling onone level extending from wall to wall shall be exempt from therequirements of this practice.1.8 Free floating ceilings (those not attached directly to anystructural walls) supported by chains or cables from thestructure are not required to satisfy the seismic force require-ments
9、provided they meet the following requirements:1.8.1 The design load for such items shall equal 1.4 timesthe vertical operating weight.1.8.2 Seismic interaction effects shall be considered inaccordance with 5.7.1.8.3 The connection to the structure shall allow a 360range of motion in the horizontal p
10、lane.1.9 The values stated in either inch-pound or SI units are tobe regarded as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shownin brackets. The values stated in each system are not exactequivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independentlyof the other. Combining values from the two syst

COMMENTARYX1.1 Recommendations in previous versions of this prac-tice were based in part on testing done in the
18、1980s. This,coupled with general observations from the earthquake proneareas in California have lead to the original practice.X1.2 Actual earthquake experience (most notablyNorthridge and Loma Prieta earthquakes) has shown that threemain things are critical for good performance of ceilingsystems dur
19、ing earthquakes which are:X1.2.1 Independent safety wires on light fixtures to preventdropout,X1.2.2 Minimum strength requirements for splices andcross/runner/main runner intersections, andX1.2.3 Spreader bars and independent support of suspen-sion member terminal ends at wall closures which prevent
20、panel dropout if the perimeter suspension terminal end slips offof the closure support ledge.X1.3 These observations have lead to the requirement forsafety wires on light fixtures and minimum connectionstrengths in Practice E580/E580M. This also led to the require-ment for 2-in. 50 mm perimeter supp
21、ort ledger and therequirement for independent support of terminal ends ofsuspension members.X1.4 Advent of International Building Code has raised theawareness of seismic installation requirements in areas withinthe United States where these requirements traditionally werenot a concern.X1.5 The intro
22、duction of non-traditional ceiling made ofwood and metal, as well as ceilings that do not use traditionaltee bar suspension systems, has lead to a need for an expansionof the prescriptive installation requirements. There has beenalso a general concern over the interaction of the ceiling systemwith H
23、VAC components, lights and sprinklers. This coupledwith the coming of next generation of performance basedseismic codes has lead to new interest in clear and conciserequirements for installation of ceiling systems.
