Each Serial Number Segment must be a unique number within the Manufacturer Identification Segment. 7.3 Use The Serial Number Segment provides unique identification of each item from all other like or unlike items provided by a manufacturer, supplier, or related service company for the life of the item. Use of the Serial Number Segment as a stand-alone element is not sufficient for a user to uniquely identify an item. The Serial Number Segment is assigned for the life of an item.
