9、477:1977 ii BSI 12-1999 Foreword The grid assay method specified in this standard meets a need that has been felt by manufacturers and users of character recognition systems in data processing. It is the simpler of two methods contained in a draft revision of ISO/R1831 and is therefore fully in acco

10、rdance with the work currently being undertaken within ISO/TC97 “Computers and information processing”. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Stand

The method measures the proportion of the surface area containing particles

13、 that are immediately obvious to the eye. 2 References The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 3 Definition For the purposes of this British Standard the following definition applies. dirt non-reflecting foreign particles embedded in a sheet o

14、f paper 4 Equipment The following equipment is required. a) Grid: a frame 1 m 1 m divided into100squares by fine wire. b) Working surface: to take paper and frame for viewing at a distance of about0.5m. c) Lighting: the lighting should be a close approximation to C.I.E. 1)recommended illuminant D65

15、as specified in BS950-1. The recommended level of illumination for this work is between750lx and 1500lx. BS 950-1 recommends750lx to3200lx, which could be excessively bright for viewing white papers. Care should be taken to minimize specular reflection in the direction of the observer. d) Cleaner: s

16、oft brush or vacuum cleaner to remove loose dirt or dust from the sample surface. e) Timer: to indicate 0.5 min or 1 min intervals. f) Counter: to tally the number of squares containing dirt. 5 Sampling and test area A total of6m 2of test samples shall be taken from a reel or stack of sheets in acco

17、rdance with BS3430. 6 Method Lay out sufficient test pieces, same side up, to form a square of area1m 2 . Remove loose dirt and dust from the surface. Place a grid over the test pieces. Start the timer and scan all the squares in turn in1min, recording once only with the counter the number of square

18、s seen to contain a dirt particle or particles. Repeat the test on the remaining5m 2 . 7 Report Report the number of squares per6m 2containing dirt. 8 Calibration Since observer-to-observer differences may exceed the variation due to change, observers should be selected by comparing assays and exclu

19、ding observers giving significantly high or low variation. Observer comparisons should be made periodically.
