9、477:1977 ii BSI 12-1999 Foreword The grid assay method specified in this standard meets a need that has been felt by manufacturers and users of character recognition systems in data processing. It is the simpler of two methods contained in a draft revision of ISO/R1831 and is therefore fully in acco

The method measures the proportion of the surface area containing particles
13、 that are immediately obvious to the eye. 2 References The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 3 Definition For the purposes of this British Standard the following definition applies. dirt non-reflecting foreign particles embedded in a sheet o
14、f paper 4 Equipment The following equipment is required. a) Grid: a frame 1 m 1 m divided into100squares by fine wire. b) Working surface: to take paper and frame for viewing at a distance of about0.5m. c) Lighting: the lighting should be a close approximation to C.I.E. 1)recommended illuminant D65
15、as specified in BS950-1. The recommended level of illumination for this work is between750lx and 1500lx. BS 950-1 recommends750lx to3200lx, which could be excessively bright for viewing white papers. Care should be taken to minimize specular reflection in the direction of the observer. d) Cleaner: s
16、oft brush or vacuum cleaner to remove loose dirt or dust from the sample surface. e) Timer: to indicate 0.5 min or 1 min intervals. f) Counter: to tally the number of squares containing dirt. 5 Sampling and test area A total of6m 2of test samples shall be taken from a reel or stack of sheets in acco

Start the timer and scan all the squares in turn in1min, recording once only with the counter the number of square

For comparing results from different sources, assessed test pieces should be exchanged for calibration between groups of observers. 1) C.I.E. International Commission on Illumination.2 blankB
