This British Standard for capping metal was first issued in1935 and this revised edition has been prepared as one of a series of standards for non-ferrous metals authorised by the Non-F

、errous Metals Industry Standards Committee. In preparing this edition the chemical composition has been reviewed and in addition to the limits specified for the main alloying elements, limits are now set for the three most important impurities (copper, aluminium and zinc). Also, the limit previously

、 included for total impurities has been retained but as a guide to the analyst, this is stated as the sum of the three main impurities plus five others (nickel, iron, cadmium arsenic and bismuth) the presence of which should be checked, plus any other impurity. Appendix A included in the earlier edi

、tion relating to a method of sampling has been omitted as the method subsequently published for the sampling of white metal bearing alloy ingots is considered to be equally applicable to capping metal. Appendix B included in the earlier edition setting out a recommended method of socketing has also

、been omitted as this is not part of a specification for the ingot material. Attention is drawn to the fact that a similar appendix is included in BS463 “Drop-forged sockets for wire ropes for general engineering purposes”.
