、reference to the following British Standard: BS 3338, Methods for the sampling and analysis of tin and tin alloys. This British Standard for capping metal was first issued in1935 and this revised edition has been prepared as one of a series of standards for non-ferrous metals authorised by the Non-F
、errous Metals Industry Standards Committee. In preparing this edition the chemical composition has been reviewed and in addition to the limits specified for the main alloying elements, limits are now set for the three most important impurities (copper, aluminium and zinc). Also, the limit previously
、 included for total impurities has been retained but as a guide to the analyst, this is stated as the sum of the three main impurities plus five others (nickel, iron, cadmium arsenic and bismuth) the presence of which should be checked, plus any other impurity. Appendix A included in the earlier edi
、tion relating to a method of sampling has been omitted as the method subsequently published for the sampling of white metal bearing alloy ingots is considered to be equally applicable to capping metal. Appendix B included in the earlier edition setting out a recommended method of socketing has also
、been omitted as this is not part of a specification for the ingot material. Attention is drawn to the fact that a similar appendix is included in BS463 “Drop-forged sockets for wire ropes for general engineering purposes”. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions o

、for capping steel wire ropes for colliery and general engineering purposes. 1.2 Freedom from defects The ingots shall be free from harmful inclusions or other defects. 1.3 Certificate of compliance The supplier shall certify that the material complies with the requirements of this standard. 1.4 Insp
、ection The purchaser shall notify the supplier when placing the order if it is his intention to inspect the material at the suppliers works. The supplier shall afford the purchaser all reasonable facilities to satisfy himself that the material is in accordance with this standard. For this purpose th
、e purchaser or his representative may, by prior arrangement, attend to inspect the material, to select and identify the test samples for testing and to witness the tests being made. The purchaser shall be at liberty to take samples from the ingots and have them analysed. The cost of such analysis sh

、a mutually acceptable testing authority. The results obtained by the independent testing authority shall be accepted as final. If the material does not comply with the standard the cost of independent testing shall be borne by the supplier. If the material complies with the standard the cost shall b
