23、edtextiles. Thismethodisapplicabletoflattextilesmadeofcellulosiccontainingyarns(tentage,tarpaulins, webbingandtapes)thatwilltypicallycomeintocontactwithsoilduringuse. Duetotheinherentresistanceofmostsyntheticfibrestoattackbymicroorganisms,fabricscontaining ahighproportionofsyntheticfibrescanonlybeju

24、dgedbythesemethodsforchangesinstructureand appearance. Althoughthismethodallowsgoodreproducibilityofresults,itisintendedtoshowcomparative performanceratherthanprovideabsolutevalues. NOTE Heavytarpaulinfabricsandwebbingmaybeofsuchastructurethatsampleswithoutfinishare resistantwithina14dayssoilburialp

28、ethod 3Safety precautions Thismethodrequirestheuseofviablemouldpropagulesandambientconditionswhichpromote mouldandbacterialgrowth.Anysafetyprecautionsandpersonalhygieneformicrobiological examinationsshallbefollowed(e.g.ISO7218). 4Principle Cellulosecontainingtextilesareconsideredresistanttoattackbym

29、icroorganismspresentinsoilif theirstructure,appearanceandtensilestrengthremainessentiallyunalteredduringasoilburialtest. Thismethodcomparestherelativereductionintensilestrengthofspecimensbeforeandaftersoil burial. Themethodisusedtocomparefinishedandunfinishedspecimensofthesamequality.The specimensar

30、eburiedinatestsoilofcontrolledwaterholdingcapacityandoptimumwatercontentfor microbialactivity.Thefinishedandunfinishedspecimensareburiedforaperiodofuptoninedays,Page6 ENISO117211:2001 whenthespecimenswithoutafinishshowareductionintensilestrengthofapproximately80%.At thisstagethetensilestrengthlossof

31、thefinishedandunfinishedspecimensaredetermined. Thelimitationofthesoilburialtesttoamaximumninedaysfortheunfinishedspecimenstolose80% oftheirinitialtensilestrengthservesasvalidationofthemicrobialactivityofthetestsoilandthetest system. NOTE1 Thedurationofthetestwillvarydependingontheactivityofthesoil.

32、Itisimportanttonotethatthe reductioninstrengthbetweenspecimenswithandwithoutanappliedfinishisthecriticalfactor,andnotthe durationofthetest.Asoilofloweractivitywillproducethesameresultasoneofhigheractivity,butthetestwill takelonger. NOTE2 A fixedtime soil burial test may allow an undefined attack on

33、the cellulosic material. The reproducibilityofresultsforreductionoftensilestrengthoffinishedandunfinishedtestspecimensisthecritical factor. 5 Apparatusandreagents 5.1 Containers,ofunglazedpotteryorreinforcedcement(asbestossubstitutematerials),atleast 150mmdeep. Containerswithmorethan150mmfillingheig

34、htshallhaveholesatthebaseforexchangeofair. 5.2 Testsoil,commercialgradecompostorcompostcontaininggardensoilaspurchasedinthe manufacturersoriginalpackingmaybeused.Freshcompostshallbemixedwithcompostpreviously usedforsoilburialtestingorwithsoilpreviouslyacclimatizedatequilibriummoistureto(95to99)% rel

35、ativehumidityandthoroughlymixedbeforeuse. Thetestsoilshallbesufficienttofillallthecontainersusedinaseriesoftests,andshallbefine grained,freeflowingandnotstickyorlumpy.Thewaterholdingcapacity(WHC)(ormaximum moistureretentioncapacity)ofthetestsoilshallbedeterminedandthewatercontent(WC)shallbe (60 5)%o

36、ftheWHC. ThepHofthetestsoilshallbebetween4,0and7,5. PreparethetestsoilofknownWHCformoisturecontentdeterminationbeforecommencingthetest.If thesoilistoomoist,letitairdry.Ifthesoilistoodry,oversprayittoaWCof(605)%oftheWHC. NOTE1 SeeannexAforasuitablemethod. NOTE2 60%ofWHCguaranteesbestmicrobialactivity

37、andoptimumwateractivityformicrobialgrowth.The watercontentnecessaryforonesoilisthereforealwaysprescribedasapproximately60%ofWHCofthe sample.Lowerhumidityslowsdownorpreventsrotting;higherhumiditymayleadtounevennessofresultsand anaerobicprocesses. Forfabricsthataretoonarrowtoallowthespecifiedspecimenwidth,carryoutthetestatfullfabric width. NOTE Aneffectivewidthof20mmanddistancebetweenthejawsof100mmisusedduetothelarge quanti

42、tiesofuntreatedfabricsrequiredandthecapacityofthesoilcontainers. 6.2 Numberofspecimens Foreachtestprepare20testspecimens,10fortestingwithoutburialand10fortestingaftersoil burial. Fordeterminationofthesoilburialduration,i.e.timeatwhichthereisan80%reductioninstrengthin thecontrolspecimenswithoutapplie

43、dfinish,prepareatleast20controlspecimensoftheunfinished testsample.Thesecontrolspecimensshallbeofthesamefabricquality,i.e.sameyarn(s),massper unitarea.construction/weave,preparationanddyeingwithnoadditionalappliedfinishsuchasa waterrepellent,softenerorbiocide.
