Thismethodcomparestherelativereductionintensilestrengthofspecimensbeforeandaftersoil burial. Themethodisusedtocomparefinishedandunfinishedspecimensofthesamequality.The specimensar
30、eburiedinatestsoilofcontrolledwaterholdingcapacityandoptimumwatercontentfor microbialactivity.Thefinishedandunfinishedspecimensareburiedforaperiodofuptoninedays,Page6 ENISO117211:2001 whenthespecimenswithoutafinishshowareductionintensilestrengthofapproximately80%.At thisstagethetensilestrengthlossof
31、thefinishedandunfinishedspecimensaredetermined. Thelimitationofthesoilburialtesttoamaximumninedaysfortheunfinishedspecimenstolose80% oftheirinitialtensilestrengthservesasvalidationofthemicrobialactivityofthetestsoilandthetest system. NOTE1 Thedurationofthetestwillvarydependingontheactivityofthesoil.
32、Itisimportanttonotethatthe reductioninstrengthbetweenspecimenswithandwithoutanappliedfinishisthecriticalfactor,andnotthe durationofthetest.Asoilofloweractivitywillproducethesameresultasoneofhigheractivity,butthetestwill takelonger. NOTE2 A fixedtime soil burial test may allow an undefined attack on

The reproducibilityofresultsforreductionoftensilestrengthoffinishedandunfinishedtestspecimensisthecritical factor. 5 Apparatusandreagents 5.1 Containers,ofunglazedpotteryorreinforcedcement(asbestossubstitutematerials),atleast 150mmdeep. Containerswithmorethan150mmfillingheig
34、htshallhaveholesatthebaseforexchangeofair. 5.2 Testsoil,commercialgradecompostorcompostcontaininggardensoilaspurchasedinthe manufacturersoriginalpackingmaybeused.Freshcompostshallbemixedwithcompostpreviously usedforsoilburialtestingorwithsoilpreviouslyacclimatizedatequilibriummoistureto(95to99)% rel
35、ativehumidityandthoroughlymixedbeforeuse. Thetestsoilshallbesufficienttofillallthecontainersusedinaseriesoftests,andshallbefine grained,freeflowingandnotstickyorlumpy.Thewaterholdingcapacity(WHC)(ormaximum moistureretentioncapacity)ofthetestsoilshallbedeterminedandthewatercontent(WC)shallbe (60 5)%o
36、ftheWHC. ThepHofthetestsoilshallbebetween4,0and7,5. PreparethetestsoilofknownWHCformoisturecontentdeterminationbeforecommencingthetest.If thesoilistoomoist,letitairdry.Ifthesoilistoodry,oversprayittoaWCof(605)%oftheWHC.
