For dated references, only the edition cited applies
、. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. ISO 1957, Machine -made textile floor coverings Selection and cutting specimens for physical tests ISO 2424:1992, Textile floor coverings Vocabulary 3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of
、 this European Standard, the following term and definition applies, but see also ISO 2424:1992 for the definition of the terms quoted in Figure A.1. 3.1 apparent effective thickness (ea) of the backing distance between the lower surface of the backing and the lowest point of the surface of the layer
、 which is immediately above (back coating, primary backing etc. see Annex A) ignoring any reinforcements included in the backing 4 Principle A transverse cross section of the textile floor covering is examined microscopically and the distance between the upper and lower surfaces of the backing is me
、asured optically, care being taken to ensure that the backing is not compressed in any way. 5 Apparatus 5.1 Optical device with a minimum magnification of x 2, fitted capable of measuring to 0,1 mm accuracy. 5.2 Cutting device to cut the specimens so that the cut edges are clean and rectilinear (for
、 example a press knife or guillotine). 6 Specimens Take a representative full production width sample of the floor covering in accordance with the method given in ISO 1957. Select the locations for sampling of three specimens in the form of strips 10 mm to 30 mm wide and 150 mm to 200 mm long, 50 mm
、 from each selvedge with the length of the specimens perpendicular to the direction of manufacture. Attach to the backing a coloured adhesive textile tape carefully choosing the location to ensure the presence of tape on the longitudinal cross-section of the samples. Ensure adhesion by gently pushin
、g the adhesive tape to the backing. EN 1318:2005 (E) 5 Cut each strip (backing side up) so that the cut edges are clean and perpendicular to the underside of the backing. Allow the sample to rest for at least 24 h so that the compressions from the attachment of the adhesive tape and from the cutting
、 can recover. NOTE Clean the cutting knife with acetone after every cutting. This will remove any adhesive that was left on the knife and will increase the cleaness of the cut. 7 Test procedure 7.1 For pile carpets Place the specimen on its cut edge so that its longitudinal cross-section with the ad

Record the division number between the zero mark and the mark coinciding with the edge of the lower face of the back-coating in line
、with the roots of the pile. Carry out three measurements per specimens, evenly spaced over the specimen. 7.2 For other textile floor coverings Proceed as specified in 7.1 but record the division number between the zero mark and the mark coinciding with the edge of the lower face of the next visible
、layer above the backing (coating). 8 Calculation and expression of the results Express the apparent effective thickness of backing (ea) as the mean of the 9 measurements to 0,1 mm. 9 Test report The test report shall contain the following information: a) reference to this European standard i.e. EN 1
、318; b) mean value of the test results according to Clause 8; c) individual values; d) any deviation from this standard which may have affected the results.
