2、 FOR NEW DESIGN 1. SCOPE The material defined by this specification is an air dry, water based, engine enamel with low volatile organic compound (V.0.C.) content and non-photochemically reactive hydrocarbon solvents for conformance to air pollution control requirements. 2. APPLICATION This specifica

3、tion was released originally for material to paint the engine and engine accessories where water, humidity, salt spray, gasoline, oil, ethylene glycol and moderate heat resistance are required. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 COMPOSITION 3.1.1 Solvent The reducing solvent shall consist of a minimum of 80 % wate

4、r by volume, with the balance hydrocarbon solvents. The latter shall not be photochemically reactive, as defined below: A photochemically reactive solvent is any solvent with an aggregate of more than 20 % of its total volume composed of the chemical compounds classified below or which exceeds any o

5、f the following individual percentage composition limitations, referred to the total volume of solvent: A combination of hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, esters or ketones having an olefinic or cycloolefinic type of unsaturation - 5 % A combination of aromatic compounds with eight or more carbon a

6、toms to the molecule except ethylbenzene - 8 % A combination of ethylbenzene, ketones having branched hydrocarbon structures, trichloroethylene or toluene - 20 % Whenever any organic solvent or any constituent of an organic solvent may be classified from its chemical structure into more than one of

7、the above groups of organic compounds, it shall be considered as a member of the most reactive chemical group, that is, that group having the least allowable percent of the total volume of solvents.ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION ESE-M62JI7-C Page 2 of 6 Suppliers shall furnish certification of c

8、ompliance to these requirements for any shipment, upon request by the responsible Ford purchasing agent and/or plant coordinator for air pollution control. 3.1.2 Toxicity The enamels shall not contain any benzol (benzene) chlorinated or other toxic compounds, or hydrolyzable chlorine derivatives, or

9、 have an obnoxious or objectionable odor. 3.1.3 Nonvolatile Solids, min 25 % (FLTM BI 2-1) 3.1.4 Volatile Organic Compounds, max 0.36 kg/L (ASTM D 3960) (3.0 lb/gal) 3.2 PHYSICAL PROPERTIES 3.2.1 Viscosity 25 - 55 s (FLTM BI 11-1) 3.2.2 Storage Stability (FLTM BI 2-3) The viscosity shall not increas

10、e more than 15 s. The material shall not jell or liver upon standing. 3.2.3 Settling, min 8 (ASTM D 1309, Modified) The test procedure is modified using a 125 mL glass container and rated with a 25 g spatula. Record level of settling from bottom of container. 3.3 PREPARATION OF TEST PANELS 3.3.1 Typ

11、e I Prepare clean steel panels in accordance with FLTM BI 3-2, Method “E“. Panels shall be prepared by air drying at 23 +/- 2 C for 72 h with a dry film thickness of 0.75 - 1.0 mils (19 - 25 m). 3.3.2 Type II Prepare clean cast iron panels in accordance with FLTM BI 3-7. Apply paint per FLTM BI 3-2,

12、 Method “E“. Panels shall be prepared by air drying at 23 +/- 2 C for 72 h with a dry film thickness of 0.75 - 1.0 mils (19 - 25 m). ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION ESE-M62JI7-C Page 3 of 6 3.3.3 Type III Prepare clean steel panels in accordance with FLTM BI 3-2, Method “E“, except add the follow

13、ing coating before applying paint. Apply light coat of current initial fill engine oil preheated to 55 +/- 2 C, and draw a thin coating with a squeegee. Allow oil to set at 23 +/- 2 C for 3 h. Panels shall be prepared by air drying at 23 +/- 2 C for 24 and 120 h with a dry film thickness of 0.75 - 1

14、.0 mils (19 - 25 m). 3.4 APPEARANCE Color and Gloss Shall match Ford Motor Company master panel. 3.5 FILM PROPERTIES 3.5.1 Drying (ASTM D 1640, 5.1) Shall air dry set to touch in 25 minutes, with a dry film thickness of 1 mil (25 m) min. 3.5.2 Hiding Power 3.5.2.1 Wet Hiding (FLTM BI 1-1) Maximum re

15、ading of 10, with wedge constant 0.007 in (178 m). 3.5.2.2 Dry Hiding (FLTM BI 1-3) Complete hiding at a dry film thickness of 1 mil (25 m). 3.6 RESISTANCE PROPERTIES Panels are prepared per para 3.3 and immediately tested after specified drying times. 16、 Page 4 of 6 3.6.1 Water Immersion, Type I Panel (FLTM BI 4-1) Disregard failures within 6 mm from edge of panel. 24 h, min No blistering. 72 h, min No blistering or blushing. Slight color and gloss change permitted. Slight softening permitted with no loss of adhesion. 3.6.2 Humidity, Type I Panel (

17、FLTM BI 4-2, Procedure “A“) 48 h, min No blistering. Slight softening permitted with no loss of adhesion. Disregard failures within 6 mm from edge of panel. 3.6.3 Salt Spray (FLTM BI 3-1, no scribe) Disregard failures within 6 mm from edge of panel. 24 h, min (Type II panel) No blistering or softeni

18、ng permitted. Slight rust shall be no worse than ASTM D 610, Table 1, Grade 9. 72 h, min (Type I panel) No blistering or softening permitted. Slight rust shall be no worse than ASTM D 610, Table 1, Grade 9. 120 h, min (Type I panel) Age 24 h at room temperature after exposure. No flaking or peeling

19、of the paint film is permitted. ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION ESE-M62JI7-C Page 5 of 6 3.6.4 Gasoline Resistance, Type I Panel After immersion in M-14J502-A(F) non-photochemically reactive petroleum naptha for 1 h at 23 +/- 2 C, there shall be no blistering. Slight dulling and softening is perm

20、itted. 3.6.5 Hot Oil Resistance, Type I Panel After immersion in current initial fill engine oil for 1 h at 65 +/- 3 C, there shall be no blistering. Slight dulling and softening is permitted. 3.6.6 Ethylene Glycol Resistance, Type I Panel After immersion in current initial fill engine coolant for 1

21、 h at 23 +/- 2 C, there shall be no blistering. Slight dulling and softening is permitted. 3.6.7 Heat Resistance (Circulating Air Oven, Type I Panel) 3.6.7.1 1 h at 200 +/- 3 C 3.6.7.2 8 h at 150 +/- 3 C; then 16 h at 23 +/- 2 C, 5 cycles There shall be no blistering or peeling of the paint film. Mo

This includes sprayability, mottling, flow-out, film thickness, hiding, hold out, adhesion, streaking, gloss

24、and freedom from dirt and seed. The delivered product shall be used as is without additional diluent required. 25、ing container of the reclaimed paint must be labeled “Reclaimed ESE-M62J17-C“ with the identification of the plant from where the sludged material was received. 3.9 SUPPLIERS RESPONSIBILITY Material supplied to this specification must be equivalent to that originally approved. Changes in formulation

26、 or processing shall not be made without prior approval as described in Supplier Procedure I-A. 4. APPROVAL OF SUPPLIERS Suppliers to this specification must be approved by the affected product engineering office. Procedure for gaining approval of a specific material to a new/existing ES-M specifica

27、tion is contained in Supplier Procedure I-A. Approved new suppliers will be added to the Engineering Materials Approved Source List. 5. GENERAL INFORMATION This information is for direction of the user and is not a requirement for the supplier. 5.1 FLAMMABILITY AND/OR TOXICITY This material represen

28、ts a potential fire and/or health hazard. The Manufacturing Engineering Department must notify both the plant security and the safety personnel of its presence in the plant to assure that proper fire and/or health precautions are provided. The location in which it is used or stored must be included in the notification.
