2、es, LLC Page1 of 7 INTERIOR ODOR TEST Application This test method is used to determine the odor originating from interior trim materials/components/assemblies in the passenger or luggage compartment or from parts or ducting that convey air into the passenger compartment as dictated by the Material

3、and/or Performance Specifications. Customer Clinics have indicated that the customer expects a new vehicle to have a neutral or new car smell. This test is designed to establish whether parts and materials used in a vehicle have an inappropriate or disturbing odor. Apparatus and Materials Required M

4、echanical Convection Ovens Capable of maintaining the specified test temperatures. 3-Litre Odorless Preserving Jar with Lid The jar and any seals it may employ must be odorless. A suitable odorless material for the jar seals is polyethylene closed cell foam, 3 mm thick of 45 kg/m3 density. Suitable

5、suppliers for jars of this type are: A Le Parfait French Glass Canning Jar with 100 mm Gasket and Lid-3 Liter Approximate dimensions: 295 mm x 193 mm x 185 mm French Flint and Ormco Ltd. Product Name/Code: Kiln3000 Approximate dimensions: 283 mm x 138 mm diameter Suitable supplier of material for

Distilled or Deionized Water 20 micro ohms/cm at 25

7、 C maximum conductivity (ASTM D1125). Sample Preparation The area or weight and number of samples is determined using Table 1 below. 14、 Ford Global Technologies, LLC Page 3 of 7 Conditioning of Materials, Air Exposure and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 2 C and 50 5% relative humidity, for not less than 24 hours prior to testing, and tested under th

15、e same conditions unless otherwise specified. Parts should be exposed to the air for a period of time after manufacture and before testing. This helps ensure samples and parts are representative of behavior in vehicles. This period of time of air exposure is as follows: Part is manufactured in China

16、 for vehicles sold in China 7-14 days air exposure Part is manufactured anywhere else 14-28 days air exposure The following points should be observed during the time of exposure to air: Temperature should not exceed 25 C Normal atmospheric pressures and humidities should be maintained Parts/Samples

17、should not be exposed to air in contaminated locations or locations with poor air quality Maximize the exposed area of the parts during air exposure (i.e. plaques should not be stacked but stored such that face and back sides are not in direct contact with other plaques) All parts or samples should

18、be wrapped/bagged for shipping and/or to limit the air exposure time as per the durations listed above. For wrapping/bagging one of the following should be used: heat sealed polyethylene (PE) bags clean plastic wrap foil (PE or PP) PE coated aluminum bags or aluminum foil Beginning and end date of a

19、ir exposure should be declared with the information supplied with the part. This is important for the test laboratory to know if air exposure has already occurred. Parts for testing must be labeled with the following information: Supplier Name Contact information Date of manufacture Beginning and en

Clean the jars, lids (using laboratory washing machines) and seals (hand or machine wash) before each use. They must be cle

21、an and odorless. 2. A blank test jar may be employed, as a control, to ensure that the jars are odorless and the water quality does not create an odor. 3. The jars containing the specimen(s) (or blank) should be conditioned and assessed per Table 2 below. FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD BO 131-03 Copyri

23、Take a stainless steel wire ring or support and suspend or stand the specimen(s) to be tested in the jar(s). The specimens are to be placed in the jar(s) in such a way to prevent direct contact with the water and to avoid wetting the specimen(s). Close the jar(s) and allow the specimen(s) to conditi

24、on for 24 h 1 hr at 23 2 C. Immediately evaluate the odor. Condition 2: Pre-heat an oven to 40 2 C. Add 50 5 ml of distilled or deionized water to the jar(s). Take a stainless steel wire ring or support and suspend or stand the specimen(s) to be tested in the jar(s). The specimen(s) are to be placed

25、 in the jar(s) in such a way to prevent direct contact with the water and to avoid wetting the specimen(s). Close the jar(s) and place in the pre-heated oven for 24 h 1 hr at 40 2 C. Remove jar(s) from the pre-heated oven and immediately evaluate the odor. Return the jar(s) to the pre-heated oven at

26、 40 2 C for 15 2 minutes between odor assessments. Condition 3: Pre-heat oven to 65 2 C. Take a stainless steel wire ring or support and suspend or stand the specimen(s) to be tested in the jar(s). Close the jar(s) and place in the pre-heated oven for 2 h 10 min at 65 2 C. Remove the jar(s) from the

27、 pre-heated oven and immediately evaluate the odor. Three assessors (maximum) are permitted to evaluate the odor at one time. One minute, maximum total time, is allowed for the three assessors to evaluate the odor prior to returning the jars to the pre-heated 65 2 C oven. Return the jar(s) to the pr

Evaluating the Odor: The assessors should be selected from staff who do not work in the production facility. Heavy smokers, us

29、ers of strong perfumes, or people with sinus problems are not suitable. All assessors must be aware of any risk assessment documents and Toxicology reports of all submitted components, which should be readily available, if requested. Acceptance tests shall be made by a minimum of five assessors. If

30、the rating of individual tests differs by more than two points, three additional assessors shall be used to retest the sample. The test must be conducted in an environment free from drafts and contaminant odors. The lid should be removed and the assessors nose should be positioned about 5 cm over th

31、e edge of the jar. The air from the jar should be wafted towards the assessors nose. The assessor should slowly inhale through the nose. The lid should not be off the jar longer than 5 seconds. Record the appropriate rating (refer to “Rating Scale“). If the assessor gives a rating which would be cla

32、ssed as a failure, a description of the odor must be included in the report. The person conducting the Odor Test should not allow the assessors to view any previous ratings or comments in any way. 5. Repeat Step 4 for each assessor and each sample. 6. The odor rating is indicated by the arithmetic m

33、ean of all the assessors individual ratings, the value being rounded to the nearest half point. To ensure that odor differentiation can be established by the assessors, all conditions being tested shall be conducted in the same time frame. For all the variants and conditions, the odor evaluation use

34、s the rating of 1 to 6, with half-point ratings, as follows: Rating Scale Rating 1 not perceptible Rating 1.5 slightly perceptible Rating 2 perceptible, not disturbing Rating 2.5 clearly perceptible but not disturbing Rating 3 very perceptible but not disturbing Rating 3.5 intense enough to be sligh

35、tly disturbing Rating 4 disturbing Rating 4.5 intense and disturbing Rating 5 strongly disturbing Rating 5.5 very intense, disturbing Rating 6 extremely disturbing The definition of a disturbing odor is one that would be considered inappropriate for a new car smell. The smell of a component/ materia

36、l is defined as disturbing, not when it is more concentrated, but rather when it transitions from one acceptable odor to another unacceptable odor upon conditioning. The concentrated odor of hot plastic, hot rubber, hot leather, etc. would not qualify as a disturbing odor. A disturbing odor or inapp

37、ropriate smell is also one that is identifiable as smells that are not normally associated with the interior of a new car, (i.e. sour milk, fish, perfume, burnt, musky, asphalt, rotten meat). 38、s should be encouraged to use the half point ratings to improve differentiation between samples. 7. The test report shall include: A reference to this standard. All necessary details for identifying the test samples. Material variant classification (A, B, C or D) from Table 1. Test condition(s) (1,

39、2, 3, and/or 4) from Table 2. Identification of assessor by name or number. Individual and average odor rating. Samples defined as unacceptable should include an odor description. Special characteristics of the test samples and their condition, beginning and end dates of air exposure Date of manufac
