2、y of Kraft paper packaging materials, treated with volatile corrosion inhibitors, to prevent rusting or corrosion of ferrous metal surfaces. Outline of Test Clean air shall be passed at a controlled rate (see Procedure) through the test apparatus. The air shall be humidified in the apparatus by bubb

3、ling through a 1 % sodium chloride solution, then passed through an empty chamber serving as a spray trap, a second chamber cont aining a mounted steel specimen or, if desired, an unmounted round bar specimen as specified, and then through a third chamber lined with inhibitor paper. The warm, humid

4、air now containing the vapor phase corrosion inhibitor shall be led into a fourth ch amber where it flows over the polished surface of a specially prepared steel specimen. The fourth tube contains an additional steel specimen in direct contact with the inhibitor paper. The apparatus used in this tes

Thi s test will be run simultaneously on a blank specimen located in the second chamber, one contacting the inhibited packaging material and one protected by the volatile inhibitor in the fourth tube. If the blank specimen does not corrode, the test results s hall

6、be considered invalid and the test shall be repeated. Apparatus and Equipment The apparatus and equipment for the inhibition of corrosion test shall consist of the following: 1. Steel Specimen - SAE 1045 cold finished steel, round bar, 5/8 inch di ameter, 1/2 inch long and free of rust. It shall be

7、rinsed for 2 minutes in C.P. benzene and then mounted in Bakelite in the manner employed for metallographic examination or, if desired, an unmounted specimen may be used. When a mounted specimen is used, the finished Bakelite block should have a total height of 1 1/4 inch and diameter of 1 1/32 inch

8、. The cleaned specimens shall be ground on a flat surface power grinder until a circular section of the metal is exposed evenly. The surface shall be hand polished in accordance with good metallographic practice and care shall be taken to avoid touching the steel surface after the machine grinding s

9、tep. The prepared specimen shall be submerged in boiling C.P. benzene for 1 2 minutes, removed and placed imme diately in the test equipment or stored in a desiccator over anhydrous calcium sulfate. If storage of more than 24 h occurs, repeat the preparation of the specimen, starting with the hand p

Black Rubber Stoppers - No. 7 with a 6 mm hole, initially cleaned with hot (150 F) 5 % sodium hydroxide solution. 5. 500 mL

12、 Gas Wash Bottle - Inlet and outlet tubes are conveniently equipped with glass 12/5 ball joint connections. 6. Four Glass Cylinders - 6 inches long, 31 mm I.D. and 35 mm O.D., held in place around the wash bottle by pressure sensitive tape. 7. The exit air line from the oven shall be connected to a

13、liquid trap in the ove n if the exit line is higher than the exit from the last cylinder. 8. The glass tubing in the stoppers shall extend 1/2 inch into the cylinders except for the fourth cylinder where the inlet tube extends to 1/2 inch above the steel surface. An indentatio n or opening shall be

14、provided in the exit tubing from the fourth cylinder to allow passage of air. 9. Glass Rings - 25 mm O.D. and 7/16 inch long shall be placed in the bottom of the second and fourth cylinders to help support the test specimen. 10. Air Pump - Allowing air flow (at 1 1/2 lb) to be 20 cu inches/minute. A

15、 maximum of three test fixtures may be connected to each pump. 11. Direct reading laboratory flow meter. Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/ - 2 C and 50 +/ - 5 % relative humidity for not less than 2

16、4 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure 1. Wash all glass parts with a test tube brush, using soap and water. Rinse in distilled water and dry in an oven at 215 - 220 F. 2. Immerse the rubber stoppers with glass and rubber tubing connections in

17、 three successive containers of hot (140 - 150 F) distilled water and dry in an oven. No te: Replace rubber tubing between cylinders 3 and 4 for each test. Tightly line cylinders 3 an d 4, each with a 4 inch by 4 3/4 inch sheet of inhibitor paper with the treated side facing inward. 5. Place a 1 inch diameter glass ring on top of the exit sto

Introduce the other block (for testing

20、vapor inhibition) through the top of cylinder 4, wi th the steel surface facing upward and 1/2 inch below the inlet tubing. 7. Pass air through a filter of cotton and 6 ft of coiled copper tubing to a flow meter and into the apparatus at a rate of 30 - 35 mL/min. (30 mL min preferred.) 8. Subject th

At the end of the test, shut off the air and imm ediately inspect the test specimens. The pac

22、kaging material shall be considered acceptable if no deposits appear on the face of the test specimens from cylinder 4 which cannot be readily removed and if no rust is observed on the face of the specimen when examined under a 20 diameter magnification. Rust on the interface between the plastic and steel on the mounted specimens will not be considered as failure of the material. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be us ed and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
