16、terruption of service. 1. SCOPE 1.1 This Standard Practice covers the performance, design, and installation requirements of fabricated tapping sleeves used in water and sewage systems. 1.2 This Standard Practice covers tapping sleeves NPS 4 through NPS 24 (DN 100 through DN 600) that have flanged ou

17、tlet branch connections with NPS 2 through NPS 12 (DN 50 through DN 300). 2. DEFINITIONS 2.1 Main A pipe used in a water or sewerage system for distribution of water or collection of sewage. 2.2 Manufacturer The party producing products in accordance with this Standard Practice. 2.3 NPS Indicates “N

18、ominal Pipe Size” (based on U.S. customary units). An NPS number is a standard size identification number that is not necessarily an actual dimension. The European or international designation equivalent to NPS is called DN (nominal diameter/diamtre nominal) in which sizes are based on SI (metric) u

19、nits. Guidelines for SI (metric) data may be found in MSS SP-86. 2.4 Purchaser The party entering into a contract or agreement to purchase products manufactured according to this Standard Practice. 2.5 Tapping Machine A machine (also known as a drilling machine) used to cut a hole into an existing p

20、ressurized or non-pressurized main through the use of a tapping sleeve and a tapping valve. The tapping machine is equipped with a cutter that extends through the waterway of the tapping valve and sleeve branch to cut the hole into the main and remove the cut-out piece (coupon) upon retraction of th

21、e cutter. The tapping valve can then be closed to seal the branch connection while the tapping machine is removed from the valve and the branch pipeline is connected to the tapping valve. 2.6 Tapping Sleeve A fitting that can be assembled onto an existing main to make a branch or “tee” connection to

22、 the main with a tapping valve and tapping machine, and without interruption of service. 2.7 Tapping Valve A gate valve with special end connections that are designed to provide proper alignment of a tapping sleeve, the tapping valve, and a tapping machine, so that the tapping machine cutter will pa

23、ss through the tapping valve and tapping sleeve branch with clearance during the tapping operation. A tapping valve is also specially designed so that its gate opens sufficiently to provide clearance for the tapping cutter to pass through the open valve during the tapping operation, and so that ther

24、e is sufficient distance between the gate and the valves connection with the tapping machine to provide clearance between the gate and the pilot drill and cutter at the conclusion of the tapping operation, when the cutter is withdrawn and the tapping valve is closed. 2.8 Working Pressure Rating Maxi

25、mum pressure to which the in-service tapping sleeve should be subjected. 2.9 Other Definitions Other Definitions may be found in MSS SP-96. MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-1242 3. PRESSURE RATING 3.1 The minimum working pressure rating shall be 150 psig (10.2 bar) for NPS 4 through NPS 24 (DN 100 through D

26、N 600). 4. MATERIAL 4.1 General The requirements of ASTM, AWWA, ASME, or other standards to which reference is made in this Standard Practice shall govern the mechanical and chemical characteristics of the tapping sleeve components. 4.2 Carbon Steel Sheet, plate or strip shall meet or exceed the req

27、uirements of ASTM A283/A283M or equivalent. 4.3 Stainless Steel Sheet, plate, or strip shall meet or exceed the requirements of ASTM A240/A240M and be Type 304 or 304L. Cast materials shall meet or exceed the requirements of ASTM A351/A351M and be Grade CF8/CF3. 4.4 Ductile Iron Castings shall meet

28、or exceed the requirements of ASTM A536 or ASTM A395/A395M, with the additional requirement that the minimum allowable elongation of the ductile iron shall be five percent (5%). 4.5 Flanges The purchaser may specify flange materials of steel, stainless steel, or ductile iron as agreed to by the manu

29、facturer. 4.6 Bolting The bolt, stud, and nut materials shall meet or exceed the requirements of the standards specified. 4.6.1 Steel As per ASTM A307 or ISO 898-1 with no coating. 4.6.2 Zinc Coated Steel As per ASTM A307, with coating per ASTM A153/A153M or ASTM B633. 4.6.3 Steel Fasteners per Duct

30、ile Iron Pressure Pipe and Fittings As per AWWA C111. 4.6.4 Stainless Steel ASTM F593, ASTM F594, ASTM F836M, or ISO 3506-1, with coating allowed to prevent galling. 4.7 Elastomers The elastomer material shall be compounded to meet ASTM D2000 and have physical properties suitable for the application

31、. 4.8 Coatings See Section 8 of this Standard Practice. 5. DESIGN 5.1 General 5.1.1 Installation Tapping sleeves shall be designed to permit assembly on an existing main, without interruption of service. Each tapping sleeve shall have a branch connection whose port is perpendicular to, and centered

32、on, the axis of the main. The branch connection provides an attachment point for a tapping valve to allow tapping into the main. 5.1.2 Welding All welds shall conform to American Welding Society (AWS) codes or other qualified procedures. MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-1243 5.2 Main Types and Main Diameter

33、s Tapping sleeves may be designed for use on various types and classes of pipe; including ductile iron, gray iron (static and centrifugally cast), asbestos cement (e.g., fibrous/fibro cement), PE, PVC, and steel. These different classes and types of pipe may have widely varying outside diameters for

34、 each nominal pipe size. 5.3 Tapping Sleeve Sizes The manufacturer should identify the range of pipe diameters for each size and type of tapping sleeve that they produce. 5.4 Tapping Sleeve and Sleeve-to-Main Sealing 5.4.1 Sealing Provisions shall be made for a watertight seal, at working pressure r

35、ating, between the pressure containing tapping sleeve mating parts, and between the tapping sleeve assembly and the main. 5.4.2 Hydrostatic Testing Where design of the tapping sleeve permits, a test connection and plug with NPT threads shall be provided so that the purchaser may hydrostatically pres

36、sure test the water tightness of the sleeve assembly on the main, the sleeve-to-valve connection at the branch connection flange, and the tapping valve gate before tapping into the main. WARNING! For personal safety reasons, DO NOT use a compressible fluid, such as compressed air, to check for seali

37、ng tightness. 5.5 Branch Connection Compatibility The connecting flange of the branch connection must be compatible with tapping valves per MSS SP-60 for sizes NPS 2 through NPS 12 (DN 50 through DN 300). Flange drilling shall conform to ASME B16.1, Class 125 drilling or as agreed to by the purchase

38、r and manufacturer. The purchaser must verify the compatibility of tapping valve and the tapping sleeve. 6. TESTING 6.1 Proof-of-Design Test At least one production prototype of the minimum and maximum main size for which the sleeve was designed, with the largest outlet connection of each type of ta

39、pping sleeve, shall be hydrostatically tested by the manufacturer to a minimum of one and a half (1.5) times the working pressure rating when assembled on a test section of pipe or an approved test apparatus. 7. WORKMANSHIP 7.1 All parts shall conform to their required dimensions and shall be free f

40、rom defects that could prevent proper functioning of the tapping sleeve. 8. PAINTING, COATING, AND CLEANING 8.1 Standard Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, all tapping sleeves shall receive an interior and exterior coating or treatment to inhibit corrosion during transit. 8.2 Optional 8.2.

41、1 Coatings The purchaser may specify certain other optional coatings conforming to AWWA C210, AWWA C213, AWWA C550, or other coatings agreed to by the manufacturer. 8.2.2 Cleaning The purchaser may specify that stainless steel tapping sleeves shall be cleaned. When specified, they shall be cleaned a

42、ccording to Sections 5.2 or 5.3 of ASTM A380/A380M. 9. MARKING AND SHIPPING 9.1 Marking The markings shall either be stamped, inked, painted, or otherwise marked. In each case, the marking shall show the manufacturers name or mark, the year of manufacture, the size of the sleeve, the size of the bra

43、nch connection, and the working pressure rating. MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-1244 9.2 Shipment Preparation The manufacturer shall use reasonable care in preparing tapping sleeves for shipment. 10. INSTALLATION 10.1 General The manufacturers instructions shall be followed for installing the tapping slee

44、ve on the main. 10.2 Sleeve Selection The sleeve shall be checked to make certain it is recommended for the actual outside diameter (O.D.) size and material type of the main. In addition, to ensure the sleeve fits properly around the main for a secure seal, the main shall be checked for out-of-round

45、ness. 10.3 Main External Surface The external surface of the main shall be cleaned, then checked for any surface defects that could impair the successful installation of the tapping sleeve onto the main. The manufacturers recommendation shall be followed. 10.4 Lubricant The gasket surfaces shall be

46、lubricated with suitable lubricant per manufacturers instructions. 10.5 Support The manufacturers instructions shall be followed for proper support of tapping sleeve, valve, and tapping machine. 10.6 Pressure Testing All tapping sleeves shall be hydrostatically pressure tested after installation on

47、the main per the manufacturers instructions. Any defects or leaks shall be corrected prior to tapping the main. WARNING!
