、ING . 4 10 INSTALLATION 4 ANNEX A Referenced Standards and Applicable Dates 5 MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-1241 FABRICATED TAPPING SLEEVES PURPOSE To provide information for standardization of fabricated tapping sleeves, typically used with tapping valves to make connections to existing mains without in
、terruption of service. 1. SCOPE 1.1 This Standard Practice covers the performance, design, and installation requirements of fabricated tapping sleeves used in water and sewage systems. 1.2 This Standard Practice covers tapping sleeves NPS 4 through NPS 24 (DN 100 through DN 600) that have flanged ou
、tlet branch connections with NPS 2 through NPS 12 (DN 50 through DN 300). 2. DEFINITIONS 2.1 Main A pipe used in a water or sewerage system for distribution of water or collection of sewage. 2.2 Manufacturer The party producing products in accordance with this Standard Practice. 2.3 NPS Indicates “N
、ominal Pipe Size” (based on U.S. customary units). An NPS number is a standard size identification number that is not necessarily an actual dimension. The European or international designation equivalent to NPS is called DN (nominal diameter/diamtre nominal) in which sizes are based on SI (metric) u
、nits. Guidelines for SI (metric) data may be found in MSS SP-86. 2.4 Purchaser The party entering into a contract or agreement to purchase products manufactured according to this Standard Practice. 2.5 Tapping Machine A machine (also known as a drilling machine) used to cut a hole into an existing p
、ressurized or non-pressurized main through the use of a tapping sleeve and a tapping valve. The tapping machine is equipped with a cutter that extends through the waterway of the tapping valve and sleeve branch to cut the hole into the main and remove the cut-out piece (coupon) upon retraction of th
、e cutter. The tapping valve can then be closed to seal the branch connection while the tapping machine is removed from the valve and the branch pipeline is connected to the tapping valve. 2.6 Tapping Sleeve A fitting that can be assembled onto an existing main to make a branch or “tee” connection to
、 the main with a tapping valve and tapping machine, and without interruption of service. 2.7 Tapping Valve A gate valve with special end connections that are designed to provide proper alignment of a tapping sleeve, the tapping valve, and a tapping machine, so that the tapping machine cutter will pa
、ss through the tapping valve and tapping sleeve branch with clearance during the tapping operation. A tapping valve is also specially designed so that its gate opens sufficiently to provide clearance for the tapping cutter to pass through the open valve during the tapping operation, and so that ther
、e is sufficient distance between the gate and the valves connection with the tapping machine to provide clearance between the gate and the pilot drill and cutter at the conclusion of the tapping operation, when the cutter is withdrawn and the tapping valve is closed. 2.8 Working Pressure Rating Maxi
、mum pressure to which the in-service tapping sleeve should be subjected. 2.9 Other Definitions Other Definitions may be found in MSS SP-96. MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-1242 3. PRESSURE RATING 3.1 The minimum working pressure rating shall be 150 psig (10.2 bar) for NPS 4 through NPS 24 (DN 100 through D
、N 600). 4. MATERIAL 4.1 General The requirements of ASTM, AWWA, ASME, or other standards to which reference is made in this Standard Practice shall govern the mechanical and chemical characteristics of the tapping sleeve components. 4.2 Carbon Steel Sheet, plate or strip shall meet or exceed the req

、facturer. 4.6 Bolting The bolt, stud, and nut materials shall meet or exceed the requirements of the standards specified. 4.6.1 Steel As per ASTM A307 or ISO 898-1 with no coating. 4.6.2 Zinc Coated Steel As per ASTM A307, with coating per ASTM A153/A153M or ASTM B633. 4.6.3 Steel Fasteners per Duct
、ile Iron Pressure Pipe and Fittings As per AWWA C111. 4.6.4 Stainless Steel ASTM F593, ASTM F594, ASTM F836M, or ISO 3506-1, with coating allowed to prevent galling. 4.7 Elastomers The elastomer material shall be compounded to meet ASTM D2000 and have physical properties suitable for the application
、. 4.8 Coatings See Section 8 of this Standard Practice. 5. DESIGN 5.1 General 5.1.1 Installation Tapping sleeves shall be designed to permit assembly on an existing main, without interruption of service. Each tapping sleeve shall have a branch connection whose port is perpendicular to, and centered
、on, the axis of the main. The branch connection provides an attachment point for a tapping valve to allow tapping into the main. 5.1.2 Welding All welds shall conform to American Welding Society (AWS) codes or other qualified procedures. MSS STANDARD PRACTICE SP-1243 5.2 Main Types and Main Diameter
、s Tapping sleeves may be designed for use on various types and classes of pipe; including ductile iron, gray iron (static and centrifugally cast), asbestos cement (e.g., fibrous/fibro cement), PE, PVC, and steel. These different classes and types of pipe may have widely varying outside diameters for
、 each nominal pipe size. 5.3 Tapping Sleeve Sizes The manufacturer should identify the range of pipe diameters for each size and type of tapping sleeve that they produce. 5.4 Tapping Sleeve and Sleeve-to-Main Sealing 5.4.1 Sealing Provisions shall be made for a watertight seal, at working pressure r
