2、of Driving Event: The primary cause of the Magellan mishap was the inadvertent mating of at least two pins of the spacecraft harness connector P2 to connector J3 of battery 1. The mismate of these connectors created an electrical short circuit within the J3 connector that resulted in electrical arcs
3、 and additional short circuits that, using the energy stored in the battery, produced damage to battery 1, connector P2, and the battery thermal blanket.Lesson(s) Learned: 1. During engagement, electrical connectors that are improperly aligned may mate inadvertently with an incorrect connector half.
4、2. Technicians attempting to mate connectors in areas of restricted visibility can mismate connectors.3. Kapton wire insulation can breakdown and sustain an electrical arc, igniting the insulation and causing damage to associated harnesses and connectors.Recommendation(s): 1. Issue an alert describi
5、ng the possibility of inadvertent electrical mating of differently keyed connector halves that are out of alignment.2. Revise connector procedures to permit greater visibility or redesign connectors to preclude inadvertent connections.Provided by IHSNot for ResaleNo reproduction or networking permit
