Description of Driving
、 Event: During a cross-range flight test mission of the Global Hawk (UAV) from Edwards AFB, CA through the adjacent range operated by NAWC-WD, China Lake, CA, the nominal vehicle inadvertently received the arm and destruct commands from an uninvolved range. Flight vehicle No. 2 was lost as a result.
、 The vehicle crashed without fire (all fuel was expelled from the wingtips) within the restricted area of R2515 with no injuries to personnel or other property.Lesson(s) Learned: 1. Because UAVs now operate at very high altitudes to long duration times, frequency deconfliction between neighboring ra
、nges (regions) was implemented throughout DoD. Prior to this accident, FTS frequencies were only deconflicted within regions.2. 3. The uninvolved range was testing its FTS ground transmitter in support of a future mission. The range radiated the FTS commands open-loop at full power. DoD has implemen
、ted new procedures to always perform tests of the FTS ground transmitting systems closed-loop into dummy loads.Recommendation(s): 1. NASA programs/projects and NASA ranges should make sure these procedures are followed for all missions and/or support of missions.2. 3. NASA is working with DoD to dev
