1、Public Lessons Learned Entry: 3641 Lesson Info: Lesson Number: 3641 Lesson Date: 2010-08-30 Submitting Organization: KSC Submitted by: Annette Pitt Subject: Replacement of the Automated Wire Analyzer (AWA) Abstract: Each payload standard mix cargo harness (SMCH) must be validated before being instal

2、led in the Orbiter. This is because the payload configuration changes with each mission. The Automated Wire Analyzer (AWA) wire tester had been in use for over 20 years and had become obsolete. Its maintenance had become unmanageable and too costly. The benefits of replacing the AWA wire tester were

3、 realized immediately. The time required to test harnesses was reduced by 80 to 90 percent. Because the replacement system offered the ability to recall all previously tested harnesses, the test data became more reliable. Description of Driving Event: The AWA would not operate during a validation te

4、st on an SMCH. The only technician available to repair the AWA had to be brought in from out of the area. The cost of parts and the downtime required for repair were not acceptable for continued use of the AWA. Because each SMCH must be validated before being installed in the Orbiter, any interrupti

5、on in harness testing creates delays in all subsequent tasks in the Orbiter flow process. Lesson(s) Learned: The continually decreasing cost of off-the-shelf test equipment versus the cost and time necessary to maintain old equipment and the risk of unreliable data makes it cost-effective to continu

6、ally look at using evolving test equipment available on the market. Recommendation(s): Continue to evaluate the benefits and the cost of replacing outdated equipment by checking the market for innovative replacements. 7、since the new system has been installed, and the time necessary to validate the SMCHs has been reduced by approximately 90 percent.
