、Public Lessons Learned Entry: 5477 Lesson Info: Lesson Number: 5477 Lesson Date: 2010-08-14 Submitting Organization: KSC Submitted by: Annette Pitt Subject: Enhanced Fuel Cell Repair Capability at KSC Abstract: When fuel cell power plants (FCPs) were developed for the Space Shuttle, KSC had minimal
、capability to repair them. As a result, even FCPs needing only minor repairs had to be returned to the vendor for repair. In the future, FCPs should be designed to maximize the use of modular components and other features that would allow a significant portion of necessary repair work (including com
、ponent replacement) to be performed at KSC. This would include components in the accessory section and single cells or fuel cell stacks. Performing these repairs at KSC would eliminate the need to send entire power plants back to the vendor. KSC could save time and money by using modular FCPs that K
、SC workers can repair. Description of Driving Event: Throughout the Shuttle Program, it was often necessary to send entire FCPs back to the vendor for repair of defects or for removal and replacement operations. This was expensive and time-consuming, especially when other FCPs had to be obtained bec
、ause none were available in Logistics. In some instances, KSC had to bring in vendor technicians to repair FCPs onsite. Lesson(s) Learned: KSC has a tremendous and skilled workforce and first-rate logistics and shops that can perform much of the FCP repair work, especially on modular designs. Shuttl
