SAE is an international technical society representing approximately 100,000 members in diverse engine

、ering fields of the mobility industry. As far back as 1910, SAE recognized the potential benefits of developing and using standards for the aerospace industry. In 1916, the American Society of Aeronautic Engineers merged with SAE as a result of a U.S. Naval Consulting Board recommendation to address

、 aviation issues. Today, SAE Aerospace continues to serve as the reservoir for knowledge and new thinking in the aerospace industry. In fact, SAE Aerospace is the worlds largest developer of aerospace industry consensus standards. Standards are used extensively by airlines, manufacturers, suppliers,

、 and government agencies around the world. SAE standards play a key role in market access, safety, cutting costs, increasing productivity, improving market position, and advancing new technologies. Standards development is giving companies the opportunity to advance their concerns, ideas, and techno

、logies. There are more than 60 committees under the Aerospace Council, with numerous subcommittees and task groups involved in the development and review of SAE aerospace standards and recommended practices. Committees composed of business leaders, engineers, and educators develop each standard. SAE

、 committees endeavor to balance the user/supplier composition of the committee. A committee deals with a specific subject vital to a particular market or engineering discipline. SAE coordination policy requires “due process” for every standards-related request/action. The committee utilizes a rigoro

、us process to ensure validity, industry consensus, and consumer safety. The aerospace industry has a unique opportunity through SAE to work directly with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Defense (DOD). Federal directives encourage increased cooperation among SAE, the D

、OD, and the FAA; therefore, participating companies have input into the development of the recommended practice/standard with which they may have to comply. SAE is a primary non-government standards development body for the conversion of Department of Defense standards and specifications. SAE is an

、active participant in the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) Early Warning Project Group. The Early Warning Project Group is designed to help identify and direct DOD conversion efforts to the appropriate standards body. SAE Aerospace Council provides direction on the military specifications conv

、ersion in the committee structure. Specific attention is directed at establishing a common procedure for part numbering and approval authority. To ensure technical equivalency, SAEs Aerospace Council ratified an accelerated approval procedure for the military specifications conversion process, which

、 involved 1) a word-for-word conversion, 2) retention of the existing part number, and 3) retention of the military specifications document number.iv TABLE OF CONTENTS SAE Aerospace Standards Products .v Users Guide vi SAE Aerospace Council Organization Chart viii Section INumerical Index . 1 Sectio

Aerospace Material Specifications (AMS) SAE has been the source of Aerospace Materials Specifications since 1939 when the SAE Aircraft Materials Division is

、sued the original 101 specifications. Today, there are approximately 3,290 documents that offer comprehensive data on chemical composition, special properties, tolerance, quality controls, and processes for all materials used in aerospace vehicles. These materials include titanium, iron, corrosion a

、nd heat resistant steels, aluminum, magnesium, copper, non-metallics, miscellaneous nonferrous alloys, refractory and reactive materials, and more. More than 1,270 AMS documents have been adopted by the Department of Defense and are listed in the DOD Index of Specifications and Standards (DODISS). A

、MS have also been accepted by ANSI as American National Standards. Converted Military Specifications also are included in all AMS products. At a glance, you can determine which individual Aerospace Technical Report deals with a generic area such as materials, hardware, testing, or reliability, or with a specific system such as hydraulic, oxygen, or duct systems. Throughout this Index, several
