、d 2012-05 Superseding ICS1000 SEP2004 Recreation Off-Road Vehicle Product Identification Numbering System 1. SCOPE This document specifies the format, content and parameters for a product identification numbering system for off-road recreation vehicles, based on the PIN structure for earth-moving ma
、chinery in ISO 10261:2002E and is not applicable to the identification of components or attachments. This standard applies only to the off-road recreation vehicle industry and does not impose parameters for the marine, lawn and garden, silviculture, husbandry, construction or earth moving sectors. 2
、. PURPOSE The purpose of SAE ICS-1000 is to provide a global identification system for off-road recreation vehicles that is similar enough to the VIN (as described in ISO 3779-1983E), in order to provide consistency and transparency to the VIN user and yet be different enough so as not to cause conf

DEFINITIONS 4.1 OFF-ROAD RECREATION VEHICLE Motorized vehicle primarily used by persons engaged in off-road recreational activity that includes, but is not limited to, off-highway motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), snowmobiles, dune buggies, go-carts, etc. 4.2 PRODUCT IDENTIFIC
、ATION NUMBER PIN Unique set of 17 alphanumeric characters assigned to a complete vehicle by the manufacturer for identification purposes 4.3 WORLD MANUFACTURER CODE WMC The first field of the PIN, alphanumeric code designating the manufacturer of the vehicle. 4.4 VEHICLE DESCRIPTOR SECTION VDS Secon
、d field of the PIN, comprising information describing the vehicle. 4.5 CHECK LETTER SECTION CL The third field of the PIN, consisting of an alpha character in the 9th position based on a calculation of the remaining 16 characters in the PIN and determining its validity. 4.6 VEHICLE INDICATOR SECTION
、 VIS The last field of the PIN, distinguishing, in conjunction with the WMC and VDS, one vehicle from another by designation. 4.7 CHECK LETTER Indicates a single character used to verify the accuracy of the transcription of the off-road vehicle identification number (PIN). After construction and cal
、culation, the ninth position of each PIN is determined. 4.8 VEHICLE TYPE Means a class of vehicle; i.e., ATV, snowmobile, off-highway motorcycle, dune buggy, etc. 4.9 MAKE Means a name that a manufacturer applies to a group of vehicles or engines. 4.10 MANUFACTURER Means an entity manufacturing/prod
、ucing or assembling the off-road vehicle. 4.11 MODEL Means a name that a manufacturer applies to a particular vehicle. SAE ICS1000 Revised MAY2012 Page 3 of 6 4.12 MODEL YEAR Means the year used to designate a discrete off-road vehicle model, irrespective of the calendar year in which the off-road v
、ehicle was actually produced, so long as the actual period is less than two calendar years. 4.13 PLANT OF MANUFACTURE Means the plant of final assembly where the manufacturer affixes the PIN. 5. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 5.1 Each PIN shall consist of seventeen (17) characters. 5.2 A check letter shall be
、 part of each PIN. The check letter shall appear in position nine (9) of the PIN, on the vehicle and on any transfer documents containing the PIN prepared by the manufacturer to be given to the first owner for purposes other than resale. 5.3 The PIN of any two off-road recreation vehicles manufactur
、ed within a 30-year period shall not be identical. 5.4 The PIN of each vehicle shall appear clearly and indelibly upon either a part of the vehicle, other than glazing, that is not designaed to be removed except for repair or upon a separate plate or label that is permanently affixed to such part. 5
、.5 Each character in each PIN shall be one of the letters in the set: ABCDEFGHJKLMNPRSTUVWXYZ or a numeral in the set: 0123456789. 5.6 All spaces provided for in the PIN must be occupied by a character specified in 4.5 above. 5.7 Characters conforming to ISO 1073-2 are recommended. 5.8 An acceptable
、 symbol may immediately precede the first numeral or letter of the PIN and immediately follow the last numeral of the PIN. 5.8.1.1 The acceptable symbols include but are not limited to: an asterisk (*), greater-than and less-than signs (HS9DBH65T4D459001 SAE ICS1000 Revised MAY2012 Page 4 of 6 6. 20、NTENT REQUIREMENTS The PIN shall consist of four sections of characters which shall be grouped accordingly. 6.1 The first section is the World Manufacturer Code (WMC) (positions 1, 2 and 3) and shall consist of three characters in the PIN. This section shall uniquely identify the manufacturer. The r
、egistration process will require sufficient information to identify a manufacturer. 6.1.1 See Appendix A for WMC asignment procedures. 6.2 The second section is the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS) (positions 4,5,6,7,8 of the PIN) shall uniquely identify the attributes of the off-road vehicle. This
、section may be either alpha or numeric. The characters utilized and their placement within the section may be determined by the manufacturer but the specified attributes must be decipherable with the information suppled by the manufacturer in the PIN decoding information that is submitted back to SA
、E. 6.3 The third section is the Check Letter (CL) (position 9) and shall consist of one alpha character. This section shall be the check digit whose purpose is to provide a means for verifying the accuracy of any PIN transcription. 6.3.1 The check letter formula will accompany the issuance of a WMC.
、 6.4 The fourth section is the Vehicle Indicator Section (VIS), (positions 10-17) of the PIN and shall consist of eight characters. 6.4.1 The first character of the fourth section (position 10 of the PIN) shall represent the off-road vehicle model year. The year shall be designated as indicated in t

PIN MARKING AND READABILITY 7.1 Primary Marking PIN characters on the product, label or plate shall be embossed, stamped, engraved, impressed, laser-cut or otherwise printed in a durable manner and located in a clearly visible and accessible
、 position. 7.1.1 PIN characters shall have a minimum height of at last 4 mm. 7.1.2 The type face shall consist of captial, sanserif characters. 7.2 Concealed Marking The vehicle also may have concealed marking consisting of the PIN or a derivation of the PIN. The purpose of this marking is to make i
、dentification of the vehicle possible if the primary marking is destroyed or becomes unreadable. The concealed marking location shall no be published in the operators or service manuals; it is to be divulged only to authorized law enforcement officers and others on a need-to-know basis. 7.2.1 The co
