、 Signaling Communication for Wirelessly Charged Electric Vehicles RATIONALE The requirements described here identify the equipment (system elements) and interactions to support wireless charging protocol for plug-in vehicles, as described in J2847. Key system elements include the vehicles rechargeab

、le energy storage system (RESS), power conversion equipment (on-board and off-board), utility meter, optional advisory sub-meter (EUMD), load management system (LMS), and equipment for control, monitoring, and communication. System elements may be optionally packaged in various ways (either separate

、ly or in combination) to deliver implementations tailored to a given environment, such as a residential, public or commercial charging location. Implementations may also vary in relation to the vehicle itself. The charging control technology will reside on the vehicle and premises. TABLE OF CONTENTS

、 SAE INTERNATIONAL J2931/6 AUG2015 Page 2 of 5 1. SCOPE This SAE Information Report J2931/6 establishes the requirements for physical and data link layer communications between Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEV) and the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE). 1.1 Purpose The purpose of J2931/6 is to

、complement J2954 and J2847/6 as it describes the physical layer communication between the EVSE and the PEV. The use cases for communications between a PEV and the utility are described in J2836/6 with the message details included in J2847/6. This document is intended to describe the issues with PEV

、association, interoperability with various PEVs and EVSE suppliers, utilities, etc. as multiple manufacturers introduce their products. Several scenarios are encountered as the customers determine their home application to PEV energy needs that also includes the Home Area Network (HAN) that interfac

、es with home appliances and the utility. Some customers will interface with the utility using multifamily dwellings, street parking, energy transfer at work, businesses and these all have their variations on how the PEV communicates. 2. DEFINITIONS 3.1 ACCESS POINT An entity that contains one station (STA) and provides access to the distribution services, via the

、wireless medium (WM) for associated STAs. 3.2 BROADCAST ADDRESS A unique group address that specifies all stations. 3.3 COMMUNICATION CHANNEL In this document, the communication channel is the 802.11 link. 3.4 DATA LINK LAYER Protocol layer used to link the physical layer to the network layer. It en

、capsulates the MAC sub-layer. 3.5 MEDIUM ACCESS CONTROL (MAC) A sub-layer of the data link layer, the MAC is a set of algorithms used for managing the access to the communication channel and mechanics to protect the integrity of transferred data. 3.6 MULTICAST ADDRESS A medium access control (MAC) a

、ddress that has the group bit equal to 1. 3.7 PHYSICAL LAYER (PHY) Set of specifications for the electrical signals used to convey information. The PHY specification defines the frequencies, amplitudes, bit rate and synchronization methods supported by a transceiver. 3.8 STATION (STA) A logical enti

、ty that is a singly addressable instance of a medium access control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) interface to the wireless medium (WM). 4. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS Wireless power transfer enables the charging of the EV without the handling of a power cord and connector. The communications medium use

、d therefore is also wireless. Communication between a Wirelessly Charged Electric Vehicle (PEV) and a Wireless EV Charger (EVSE) takes place over one of the 802.11 PHY layers, as described in IEEE 802.11-2012. The architecture is shown in J2836/6. The messages for wireless energy transfer between th

、e PEV and the off-board charger in the EVSE are described in J2847/6. The association of the PEV to the EVSE is described in J2931/6. Association use cases are described in J2836/6 with the actual messages in J2847/6. In general J2836 is the series for Use cases and general information, J2847 is the

、 corresponding message details and J2931 describes requirements and protocol. SAE INTERNATIONAL J2931/6 AUG2015 Page 4 of 5 The following paragraphs identify the detail of wireless communication for electric vehicle charging: 4.1 System Definition 4.1.1 EVSE Requirements 4.1.1.1 Stationary Charging

、Environment For the power transfer to a parked vehicle x The EVSE shall support the 802.11n PHY/MAC and may optionally also support 802.11ac and/or 802.11p.The PEV shall support the 802.11n PHY/MAC; it may optionally also support 802.11ac and/or 802.11p. NOTE: The choice of 802.11n allows home WPT s

、ystems and other WPT systems designed to only charge stationary EVs to take advantage of the stable and mature 802.11n technology while avoiding any licensing requirements that may apply to 802.11p infrastructure (roadside) equipment. 4.1.1.2 Dynamic Charging Environment For the power transfer to mo

、ving vehicles x The EVSE shall support the 802.11p PHY/MAC. x The PEV shall support the 802.11p PHY/MAC. 4.1.2 General Requirements The EVSE shall act as an Access Point. The EVSE should support multicast capability in order to support the beacon message (optional) defined in J2847/6. Possible SSID

、naming conventions are in section 5. 4.2 Security For 802.11n / 802.11ac, the access level security shall use WPA2 (also known as IEEE 802.11i). For 802.11p, the access level security shall use the default security for WAVE/DSRC. For further information on security, refer to J2931/7.(WIP). NOTE: J29

、31/7 may override the requirements in this section. 5. NETWORK NAMING CONVENTIONS (INFORMATIVE) The first four letters of the SSID of the network may be set to “WPT”.
