、ception of television and sound broadcast transmissions Part 2: Satellite antenna systems 1 Scope This part of SANS 10061 establishes principles for the installation of communal and single antenna systems for the reception of signals in the frequency range 11,2 GHz to 12,7 GHz from orbiting satellit

、es. It includes the protection of such systems against atmospheric electrical disturbances. Associated receiving equipment is also covered. NOTE See also the NOTE to 1.1 of SANS 10061-1. 2 Normative references The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitu

SANS 10061-2:2008 Edition 1.1 4 3 Definitions For the purposes of this part of SANS 10061, the relevant definitions given in SANS 10061-1 apply. 4 General installation requirements 4.1 Suitability of site It is the r

、esponsibility of the installer to ensure that the proposed site is suitable with respect to reception conditions, aesthetic considerations and the possible presence of terrestrial interference, and that the proposed installation complies with the purchasers requirements. NOTE Directional parameters

、of satellites may be changed at any time by the operators and the site and installation should therefore provide adequate east-west coverage. 4.2 Legal requirements It is the responsibility of the installer (or of the owner, as agreed upon) to ensure that the proposed installation complies with any

、relevant legal requirements (see foreword). Amdt 1 5 Mechanical and electrical safety 5.1 General Ensure that each part of the antenna(s) and of any outdoor component of the installation is adequately protected from deterioration that might be caused by the most adverse weather conditions to which t

、he part could be exposed. 5.2 Materials and protection For information on which materials to use and on corrosion tests, see annex A of SANS 10061-1. Ensure that structural steelwork is protected in accordance with SANS 1200 HC. 5.3 Mounting 5.3.1 Mechanical stress It is the responsibility of the in

、staller to ensure that the antenna, when mounted, can withstand the stresses resulting from the mass-loads and wind loads to which it will be subjected (see annex E of SANS 10061-1). Where an antenna that has a reflector with a major axis of 1,5 m or greater is mounted on a building or other structu

、re that raises the antenna significantly above ground level, ensure that safety chains are fitted. In such cases, consult a qualified structural engineer on the method of mounting to be used and ensure that the engineer gives written approval of the installation. Ensure that an antenna system is not

、 installed where an explosive or flammable atmosphere is likely to be present. NOTE In all cases, the manufacturers recommendations for mounting should be followed. SANS 10061-2:2008 Edition 1.1 5 5.3.2 Protection of joints Subclause 6.2.2.3 of SANS 10061-1 shall apply. Where the mounting of the ant

、enna incorporates movable joints, the sections of the mounting on each side of the joint shall be bonded together with a flexible strap that has a current rating of at least 30 A. 5.4 Safety earthing and protection against atmospheric electricity 5.4.1 General Subclause 6.2.3.1 of SANS 10061-1 shall

、 apply. 5.4.2 Cable installation Subclause 6.2.3.2 of SANS 10061-1 shall apply. 5.4.3 Safety of amplifiers and other devices Ensure that a) all electrically operated devices such as amplifiers, low noise block receivers (LNBs) and scanning motors comply with the relevant requirements of SANS 60065,

、and b) if an amplifier has a safety earth terminal, the terminal is connected to the antenna earthing system. Alternatively, the earth lead of the mains plug on the amplifier may be used, where this does not introduce interference into the system. 5.5 Cable and cabling Subclauses 5.8 and 6.3 of SANS

、 10061-1 shall apply. 5.6 Conduit and ducting Subclause 6.4 of SANS 10061-1 shall apply. 6 Outlet sockets 6.1 General 6.1.1 Ensure that the LNB is terminated with a female “F“ type socket in a fixed housing and is suitably labelled to identify its function. 6.1.2 Where the frequency is down-converte

、d to VHF or UHF, ensure that the outlet socket complies with 5.9 of SANS 10061-1 and that it is suitably labelled to identify its function. 6.2 Dielectric strength Subclause 5.9.2 of SANS 10061-1 shall apply. SANS 10061-2:2008 Edition 1.1 6 7 Distribution systems Subclauses 5.2 (other than 5.2.4 and

、 5.2.5) and 5.4 of SANS 10061-1 shall apply. 8 Antennas Amdt 1 8.1 Antenna selection Ensure that the antenna complies with the requirements of SANS 1611. 8.2 Siting of antennas Amdt 1 Use suitable equipment to ensure that the optimum receivable signal is obtained by adjusting the elevation, the azim

、uth and the polarization. Use a suitable satellite receiver to establish the best orientation for the antenna. Keep the antenna as clear from obstruction as possible so that there is a clear “view“ of the transmitting satellites. 8.3 Impedance Ensure that the LNB and cable have a nominal impedance o

、f 75 . 9 Signals 9.1 Signal levels Figure 1 gives the signal strength footprint for South African television transmissions from Ku-band satellite PanAmSat (PAS-4 72E). Figure 2 shows the elevation angles in South Africa for satellite PanAmSat (PAS-4 72E). At the time of installation, the installer s

、hould record signal level measurements under normal operating conditions. In the case of communal systems, ensure that the outlet socket voltages from the satellite receiver comply with the relevant requirements of 4.7.2 and 4.7.3 of SANS 10061-1. 9.2 Grades of impairment The installer should aim to

、 achieve a minimum grade of impairment of 4, from the grades of impairment given in table 1. Table 1 Grades of impairment 1 2 3 Quality Grade1)Impairment Excellent 5 Imperceptible Good 4 Perceptible but not annoying Fair 3 Slightly annoying Poor 2 Annoying Bad 1 Very annoying 1) CCIR 5-point scale.

、At the time of installation, the installer should record the assessed grade of impairment under normal operating conditions. SANS 10061-2:2008 Edition 1.1 7 If the assessed grade is less than 4, the acceptance of the picture and sound quality by the user should be obtained in writing. Figure 1 Ku-ba

、ompletion of the installation and on the acceptance by the user: NOTE In the case of a communal system, the user may be a body corporate. a) the name and address of the installer and the address, if other than that of the installer, from which service or service information is available and, in the

、case of a communal system, details of the cable layout and circuit arrangement; b) adequate instructions for the operation of the system; c) a signed warranty that the system complies with all the relevant provisions of this part of SANS 10061; d) the grade of impairment and signal level achieved fo
