11、 the basic requirements for carpet underlays, and also requirements for a grading system for location or areas. It does not cover specific characteristics, such as sound-insulation properties and resistance to fungal attack. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable

Amdt 2 SANS 1419:2009 Edition 2.2 4 3 Definitions For the purposes of this standard, the definitions given in SANS 10004 and the following definitions apply: 3.1 acce

17、ptable acceptable to the authority administering this standard, or to the parties concluding the purchase contract, as relevant 3.2 compression loss in thickness of the carpet underlay when the thickness is measured under an initial pressure of 2 kPa and a final pressure of 100 kPa, and also under v

18、arious intermediary pressures 3.3 defect fault that reduces the ability of the carpet underlay to perform the function for which it was designed 3.4 foreign matter trash, metal wire and other matter likely to cause an injury or a blemish 3.5 location (area) grading index of suitability of a carpet u

19、nderlay to withstand different use-intensities in areas of practical use. The scale is 1 to 5, with the higher values requiring a carpet underlay to be capable of withstanding a higher degree of traffic. The criteria for determining the grading class are based on tests for compression after dynamic

20、loading, work of compression after dynamic loading and retention of original work of compression 4 Requirements 4.1 General A carpet underlay shall a) be made in accordance with sound manufacturing practice, b) be of the fibrous type or the foam type, as required (see annex A), c) be of acceptably u

21、niform make (i.e. substantially free from hard lumps and ridges), d) be free from foreign matter, e) be free from any obnoxious odour, f) be free from defects that affect its appearance or that can affect its serviceability (or both), g) have straight and evenly trimmed edges, and h) be delivered in

22、 a clean and commercially dry condition. SANS 1419:2009 Edition 2.2 5 4.2 Dimensions of rolls 4.2.1 Width The nominal overall width of a carpet underlay in a roll shall be as required (see annex A). The actual overall width determined in accordance with 5.1, shall be at least 98,5 % of the stated no

23、minal width (see 6.2.1(d). 4.2.2 Length The carpet underlay in a roll shall be in one continuous length, and, when determined in accordance with 5.1, the actual length in a roll shall be at least equal to the stated nominal length (see 6.2.1(e). 4.3 Basic requirements Carpet underlays shall comply w

24、ith the appropriate basic requirements given in table 1. 27、as required (see annex A), and the underlay shall comply with the appropriate requirements given in table 2. 29、ch roll of carpet underlay in the sample for compliance with the requirements of 4.1 and 4.2, using SANS 82 and SANS 84 to determine the width and length, respectively. 5.2 Preparation of test specimens After conditioning the test samples in accordance with SANS 70, cut from them the test specimens

30、required for the respective tests. 5.3 Sample width Use SANS 81 to determine the width of the test samples. 5.4 Thickness deviation Use the method given in SANS 150. Amdt 1 5.5 Thickness loss after prolonged, heavy static loading Use the method given in ISO 3416. 5.6 Thickness loss under dynamic loa

31、ding Use the method given in ISO 2094. 5.7 Breaking strength and elongation Use SANS 13934-1, but cut the specimens to a width of 100 mm and record the elongation at an applied force of 30 N unless prior breakage occurs. 32、m underlays only) 5.8.1 Apparatus 5.8.1.1 Rectangular, rigid metal plate, of dimensions at least 80 mm 40 mm. 5.8.1.2 Masspiece, such that the combined mass of the metal plate (see 5.8.1.1) and the masspiece is 2,5 kg. 5.8.1.3 Single-sided adhesive carpet tape, of width 50 mm. 5.8.2 Test specimen Cu

33、t a test specimen of dimensions at least 240 mm 120 mm. 5.8.3 Procedure 5.8.3.1 So fold the test specimen, as shown in figure 1, that the edges meet and the backing material, if any, is innermost. 5.8.3.2 Tape (see 5.8.1.3) the edges of the test specimen together and then turn the specimen over so t

34、hat the edges where the folds meet, are on the underside. 5.8.3.3 Place the metal plate (see 5.8.1.1) on the folded test specimen, as shown in figure 2. 5.8.3.4 Place the masspiece (see 5.8.1.2) on top of the metal plate and leave for 1 h. 5.8.3.5 Remove the masspiece and metal plate and immediately

35、 examine the folded specimen for signs of cracking and breaking. 5.8.4 Evaluation Report the number of cracks or breaks and their length and location relative to the position of the metal plate during loading. 37、e the methods given in BS 4098 and ISO 2094, but calculate compression between 2 kPa and 100 kPa after dynamic loading. Determine the work of compression before and after dynamic loading in accordance with BS 4098, but use a presser foot of surface area between 700 mm2and 1 000 mm2and load the speci

38、men up to 100 kPa only. Calculate the work of compression between 2 kPa and 100 kPa before and after dynamic loading for 1 000 cycles in accordance with ISO 2094. Certain carpet thickness gauges might require modification. 5.9.2 Calculation 5.9.2.1 Work of compression Calculate the work of compressi

39、on either direct, by integrating the area under the loading curve between 2 kPa and 100 kPa by computer program, or by estimating the area from discrete thickness measurements. If the second method is used, take thickness measurements at pressures of 2 kPa, 5 kPa, 10 kPa, 20 kPa, 50 kPa and 100 kPa

40、and calculate the work of compression (in joules per square metre), using the following formula: Wc = (1,5t 2+ 4t 5+ 7,5t 10+ 20t 20+ 40t 50 73t 100) where t2is the thickness at 2 kPa pressure, in millimetres; t5is the thickness at 5 kPa pressure, in millimetres, etc. 5.9.2.2 Retention of original w

41、ork of compression Calculate the difference in percentage retention between the original work of compression and the work of compression after dynamic loading. 6 Packing, labelling and marking 6.1 Packing Carpet underlays shall be so packed as to protect them from damage during normal transportation

42、 and storage. 6.2 Labelling and marking 6.2.1 Rolls The following information shall appear in legible and indelible marking on a label securely attached to the inner end of each roll of carpet underlay: a) the manufacturers name or trade mark (or both); b) the type of underlay (i.e. fibrous or foam)

43、; SANS 1419:2009 Edition 2.2 9 c) the location or area grade and designation, as appropriate; d) the nominal width, in centimetres; e) the nominal length, in metres; and f) the nominal thickness, in millimetres. 6.2.2 Additional marking When so required, rolls shall bear information additional to th

44、at specified in 6.2.1. SANS 1419:2009 Edition 2.2 10 Annex A (normative) Notes to purchasers The following requirements shall be specified in tender invitations and in each order or contract: a) the type (see 4.1(b); b) the nominal width (see 4.2.1), length (see 4.2.2) and thickness; c) the location

45、 or area grade (see 4.4); and d) additional marking, if required (see 6.2.2). Annex B (informative) Quality verification of carpet underlays When a purchaser requires ongoing verification of the quality of carpet underlays it is suggested that, instead of concentrating solely on evaluation of the fi

46、nal product, he also direct his attention to the manufacturers quality system. In this regard it should be noted that SANS 9001 covers the provision of an integrated quality system. Amdt 1 Annex C (informative) Note on surface fire index When the surface fire index of a textile floor covering is req

47、uired for a specific installation, it is necessary to test the carpet underlay together with the textile floor covering to be used in that installation. Use the method given in SANS 10177-4 for that purpose. SANS 1419:2009 Edition 2.2 11 Annex D (informative) Notes on location or area grading and th

48、e installation of textile floor coverings and carpet underlays D.1 The essential purpose of this grading scheme is to present the intending purchaser with a simple, meaningful and non-technical means of identifying the location or area suitability of any carpet underlay, irrespective of the construc

49、tion and composition of the carpet underlay. The product is clearly marked from 1 to 5 into an ascending, numerical scale representing the order of expected performance. It should be noted that a carpet underlay of grade 3 is very thick and luxurious and designed for high energy absorption. Grade 4 and 5 carpet underlays are designed for commercial performance and are not as thick and luxurious as grade 3 carpet underlays. In cases where a very thick and luxurious carpet underlay is required for a location or area of grade 4 or 5 in, for example, a hotel
