、ystems Requirements for measurement processes and measuring equipment. Amdt 1 SANS 5118 (SABS SM 118), Calibration and grading of machines for breaking strength test on textiles. Amdt 1 3 Principle A prescribed number of textile fabric test specimens is tested in accordance with a prescribed method
、to determine the ball burst strength. Either the strength of each specimen or the arithmetic mean is reported. 4 Apparatus 4.1 Tensile testing machine A suitable power-driven tensile-strength testing machine (with a constant rate of traverse of the ring-clamp of 100 mm/min 10 mm/min), calibrated in
、accordance with SANS 250. On the machine, choose the working range that will give the greatest accuracy. Use the ball burst attachment in place of jaws. Amdt 1 4.2 Ball burst attachment A ball burst attachment (see figure 1) consisting of a ring-clamp of internal diameter 44,450 mm 0,025 mm and suit
、able for so securing a specimen that, when the machine is operated, the centre of the specimen is pressed (until it bursts) against a stationary polished steel ball of diameter 25,400 mm 0,025 mm. The direction of traverse of the ring-clamp shall be at right angles to the plane of its face. SANS 549
、3:2008 Edition 4.1 2 5 Preparation of test specimens From each conditioned test sample, so cut 10 specimens, each of size 100 mm x 100 mm, that as many as possible of the yarns used in the manufacture of the fabric are represented. When selvedges are present, do not cut any specimen from nearer a se
、lvedge than one-tenth of the width of the test sample. 6 Procedure Insert a specimen loosely in the ring-clamp, and, if necessary, stretch it uniformly by hand until it is taut, and then fasten it securely. Operate the machine and record the maximum force withstood by the specimen. Test the remainin
、g specimens in the same way. 7 Calculation Either report the ball burst strength, in newtons, of each specimen or calculate the arithmetic mean of the 10 results and report it as the ball burst strength, in newtons, of the test sample.
