6、Scope This standard specifies a method to determine the burning resistance of cable dielectric and outer coverings. 2 Apparatus 2.1 Burner, that has a nozzle of nominal bore 10 mm. 2.2 Laboratory stand, that has a clamp to support the test specimen. 2.3 Stop-watch or stop-clock 2.4 Three-sided sheet
7、 metal screen, of height 1 200 mm, of width 300 mm, of depth 450 mm, and open at the top and the front. 3 Test specimen One specimen, 100 mm long, cut at random from the finished cable, and that has the conductor or cores left in place but any external covering, which is not required to be tested, r
8、emoved. 4 Conditioning Condition the specimen(s) for at least 16 h at a temperature of (23 2) C in an atmosphere of relative humidity (50 5) %. 5 Procedure 5.1 Situate the burner in still air and protect it by the sheet metal screen. 5.2 So adjust the flame as to have an overall height of 150 mm and
9、 an inner blue cone of height 50 mm. 5.3 So insert a bare copper wire, of diameter 0,7 mm and a free length of at least 100 mm, in the flame that its axis is horizontal and 50 mm above the top of the burner and the free end of the wire is vertically in line with the edge of the nozzle on the side re
10、mote from the supported end of the wire. 5.4 The wire shall melt within 6 s to 8 s. SANS 5502:2009 Edition 3 2 5.5 Within 10 min after the removal of the specimen from the controlled atmosphere, so clamp the specimen in the stand that its longitudinal axis is horizontal. 5.6 With the burner in a ver
11、tical position, apply the flame to the free end of the specimen. 5.7 After 60 s remove the flame and, immediately after the specimen self-extinguishes, re-apply the flame for a further 30 s. 5.8 Record the period during which the specimen continues to burn after each application of the flame.
