It recommends the form of test pieces and the testing procedures for materials in wrought or cast form. 2 Normative reference The following standard contains provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this standard. All standards are subject to revision and, since a

10、ny reference to a standard is deemed to be a reference to the latest edition of that standard, parties to agreements based on this standard are encouraged to take steps to ensure the use of the latest edition of the standard indicated below. Information on currently valid national and international

Amdt 2 3 Definitions For the purposes of this standard, the following definitions apply: 3.1 agreement agreement between the purchaser, the

12、supplier, and, if relevant, the inspection authority concerned 3.2 capacity the highest striking energy of the testing machine 3.3 centre of percussion that point in a rotating body at which a blow, delivered in a tangential direction, will cause no reactive force at the centre of rotation 3.4 impac

13、t resistance the energy absorbed by a test piece when it is struck a single blow at a specified striking velocity and striking energy SANS 6223:2010 Edition 1.3 4 3.5 impact test a test to determine the energy absorbed by a notched bar when it is fractured under specified conditions by a blow of spe

14、cified energy 3.6 striking energy the kinetic energy of the striker of the testing machine when it has reached the striking position of its swing, and that can be utilized effectively as a blow on the test piece, i.e. initial potential energy minus friction and windage loss 4 Principle The test cons

15、ists of measuring the energy consumed in the breaking of a notched test piece by one blow from a striker carried by a pendulum. The test piece is gripped vertically, with the root of the notch in the same horizontal plane as the upper face of the grips. The blow is struck on the notched side, at a f

16、ixed height above the notch. 5 Form and dimensions of test pieces 5.1 General Izod test pieces are normally of square (10 mm 10 mm) or circular (11,43 mm diam.) cross-section and may have one, two or three notches. Subsidiary test pieces of rectangular (10 mm 7 mm or 10 mm 5 mm) cross-section may, h

17、owever, be used when the sample dimensions do not allow the full-sized square cross-section to be obtained. Where more than one notch is cut in a test piece, the notches shall be spaced as shown in table 1 or table 2, unless otherwise required by the material specification or product specification.

18、Successive notches in a square or circular three-notch test piece shall be staggered by 90 (see figures 3 and 7), whilst in a two-notch test piece (see figures 2 and 6) or in a subsidiary three-notch test piece, they shall lie on opposite sides. The notch(es) in a circular test piece may be straight

19、 or curved. The notch(es) in a square or rectangular test piece shall be straight and of uniform depth. All notches shall have their main plane of symmetry perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the test piece. 5.2 Test pieces of square cross-section The test piece shall, subject to the tolerance

20、s given in columns 3 and 4 of table 1, conform to the dimensions for single-notch, two-notch or three-notch test pieces (as relevant) given in figures 1 to 4 and in column 2 of table 1. 5.3 Subsidiary test pieces of rectangular cross-section The test piece shall, subject to the tolerances given in c

21、olumns 3 and 4 of table 1, conform to the dimensions for single-notch, two-notch or three-notch test pieces (as relevant) given in column 2 of table 1. Each notch shall be cut in a narrow face of the test piece and its details shall be as shown in figure 4. 5.4 Test pieces of circular cross-section

22、The test piece shall, subject to the tolerances given in columns 3 and 4 of table 2, conform to the dimensions for single-notch, two-notch or three-notch test pieces (as relevant) given in figures 5 to 8 and in column 2 of table 2. 23、r cross-section The curved-notch circular cross-section test piece shall, subject to the tolerances given in columns 3 and 4 of table 2, conform to the dimensions for single-notch, two-notch or three-notch test pieces (as relevant) given in figures 9 to 11 and in column 2 of table 2. Details of the

24、notch are given in figure 12. The notches shall be cut around the specimen (as shown in figures 9 to 11), unless otherwise required by the material specification or product specification. 34、ction test pieces 6 Sampling and preparation of test pieces 6.1 Castings and ingots The preparation of the test pieces shall be in accordance with the requirements of the material specification or product specification. 6.2 Wrought metals 6.2.1 General 6.2.1.1 The location and orientation of the tes

35、t samples in the material or product and the number of test samples should be in accordance with the requirements of the material specification or product specification. SANS 6223:2010 Edition 1.3 11 6.2.1.2 Where the method of sampling is not specified, the procedure to be used should be decided by

36、 agreement, bearing in mind the recommendations given in 6.2.2. 6.2.2 Number and location of test samples 6.2.2.1 Where there is a probability of variation of properties in different parts of the material, the number of test samples and the position from which they are taken should be such that the

37、average value of the results obtained can be regarded as representative of the material. 6.2.2.2 In rolled sections and bars, test samples should not be cut from locations likely to include “pipe“ formed in the original ingot. Test samples should be so orientated that the axis of the test piece will

38、 be parallel to the direction of rolling. In the case of plates, the test sample should have its axis at right angles to the direction of last rolling. 6.3 Identification of test samples and test pieces Each test sample (and each test piece cut from a test sample) should be so marked that it is poss

39、ible to identify it with the product from which it was taken and, if necessary, to identify its location and orientation in the product. The test piece may be marked on any face not in contact with supports or anvils and at a position well away from the notch, in order to avoid the effects of work-h

40、ardening induced by stamping. 6.4 Condition of test samples Where the test samples are not attached to the product (e.g. in castings or in products that have to be heat-treated or cold-worked subsequent to the cutting out of the samples), the test samples shall be subjected to mechanical or heat-tre

41、atment operations that are as far as possible the same as those to which the product is normally subjected. In particular, the test samples should (if possible) be heat-treated at the same time and under the same conditions as the product itself. 6.5 Straightening of test samples Straightening of a

42、test sample should be avoided. Where straightening is necessary (in order to obtain correct test pieces), the straightening should be done cold and care should be taken not to cause appreciable work-hardening. The straightening should be reported with the results (see 9.1). 6.6 Cutting out of test s

43、amples 6.6.1 The test samples should be cut out by a method that does not change the properties of the metal in the zone containing the test pieces. 6.6.2 If the method used causes local changes (due to work-hardening or heating effects), sufficient allowance should be made to enable the disturbed m

44、etal to be machined away during the preparation of the test piece(s). 6.7 Machining of test pieces 6.7.1 The machining of the test pieces may be done by means of any suitable method that gives the required dimensional accuracy and a surface finish of roughness not exceeding 2 m (see tables 1 and 2).

45、 Care should be taken to ensure that the condition of the material is not affected by any heat generated as a result of the machining operation. 6.7.2 The notch may be made by means of any machining method but it shall be carefully so prepared that no grooves appear at the base of the notch. 48、stallation of testing machine The testing machine shall be securely and rigidly bolted to a concrete floor of thickness at least 150 mm, or to a foundation that has a mass at least 40 times that of the pendulum. The plane of swing of the striker shall be vertical. The testing machine shall be so con

49、structed that the loss of energy (e.g. from translation, rotation, friction, vibration) in the machine framework during a test is negligible. The centre of percussion of the pendulum and the striking edge should be at the same distance from the axis of rotation of the pendulum, subject to a tolerance of 1 %. 7.3 Striking energy of testing machine In general, a testing machine of capacity 165 J 5 J shall be used.
