13、3 side half a bovine hide that has been cut along the backbone line 4 Requirements 4.1 Physical requirements 4.1.1 General The leather shall be vegetable-tanned leather and may have been syntan retanned. It shall be free from open scratches, excessive tick marks, and bacterial damage on the grain su
14、rface, from deep flay cuts on the flesh side, and from other damage which may impair its wearing properties. Only one brand mark, of area not exceeding 6,5 dm2, shall be permissible on a back, side, or butt. 4.1.2 Form The leather shall be supplied in backs, sides, or butts1), as specified by the pu
15、rchaser (see annex A). Backs shall be well trimmed, and free from flanks and tailings. Sides shall be well trimmed. Butts shall be trimmed square, with the belly edges parallel to each other and the shoulder end cut at right angles to the belly edges. 4.1.3 Thickness The thickness of the leather (ot
16、her than strap leather see 4.1.4) shall conform to the values given below appropriate to the type of leather specified by the purchaser (see annex A): a) Bridle leather. The thickness shall be 3 mm to 4 mm. b) Harness leather. The thickness shall be 5 mm to 6 mm. 4.1.4 Dimensions of strap leather ba
17、cks When backs for specific use as strap leathers are required by the purchaser (see annex A), the dimensions of each back shall conform to the values given below appropriate to the grade specified by the purchaser (see annex A): a) Light grade. The thickness shall be 3,5 mm 0,25 mm, and the length
18、and width shall be such that it is possible to obtain from it, after trimming of the back, a piece of size at least 1 850 mm 450 mm. b) Heavy grade. The thickness shall be 5,0 mm 0,25 mm, and the length and width shall be such that it is possible to obtain from it, after trimming of the back, a piec
19、e of size at least 1 500 mm 600 mm. 4.1.5 Finish The leather shall have a natural finish or stained finish as required by the purchaser (see annex A), but shall not have a pigment finish. The leather shall be evenly coloured, free from oxidized patches of tan, and shall have a tight grain. In the ca
20、se of a stained finish, the colour shall be as specified by the purchaser (see annex A). When tested in accordance with 5.2, the finish shall be fast to dry rubbing. 1) Sides and butts are not suitable for use as strap leathers. SANS 705:2009 Edition 1 5 4.1.6 Resistance to grain cracking When teste
21、d in accordance with 5.3, the leather shall not crack when bent, grain side out, through 180 over a mandrel of nominal diameter 6,35 mm. 4.1.7 Breaking strength The breaking strength, determined in accordance with 5.4, of a dumb-bell shaped leather specimen cut parallel to the backbone, shall be as
22、follows: a) Leather of thickness 3,25 mm to 3,75 mm: 880 N, min. b) Leather of thickness 4,75 mm to 5,25 mm: 1 100 N, min. 4.2 Chemical requirements 4.2.1 pH Value The pH value of the leather, determined in accordance with 5.5, shall be at least 3,3. 4.2.2 Grease content The grease content of the le
23、ather, determined in accordance with 5.6 on a 14 % moisture basis, shall be as follows: a) Harness leather: 10 %, min. b) Bridle leather: 8 %, min. 4.2.3 Moisture content The moisture content of the leather, determined in accordance with 5.7, shall not exceed 17 %. 5 Methods of test 5.1 Conditioning
24、 of test specimens and test conditions Condition each test specimen, in accordance with SANS 5616, and carry out the tests without removing the specimens from the conditioned atmosphere. 5.2 Resistance of finish to dry rubbing Use SANS 6080. 5.3 Resistance to grain cracking Use SANS 5630. 5.4 Breaki
25、ng strength Use SANS 5636, but use dumb-bell test specimens that have a width at the waist of 12,7 mm.
