INTRODUCTION 1.1 Gen

3、eral This EIA Laser Engineering Bulletin was developed by Laser Safety L-1 Engineering Committee which .is made up of engineering and technical person- nel from the thirty-four EIA company members of the EIA Laser Subdivision, This group of companies manufactures over 3/4 of the lasers produced by t

4、he U .S. Electronics Industry (Dollar Value) . 1.2 Purpose of this Bulletin (a) To promote the safe use of lasers. (b) To identify categories of laser equipment and installations with distinctive nature and degree of hazard so that the necessary and appropriate safety measures, design features, rest

5、rictions, and rules can be applied within each category. (c) To provide a primary safety classification of laser equipment and in- stallations and a convenient terminology for use in laser safety guidelines, policies, codes, and rules. 2. CATEGORIES .OF LASER EQUIPMENT AND INSTALLATIONS 2 1 Introduc

6、tion The Safety Classification of Laser Equipment and Installations is a conceptual scheme for classifying all laser usage in terms of (1) the effective use of radiation confinement and control and (2) the amount of hazardous radiation produced within the equipment. not be limited to): That laser sy

7、stem radiation includes (but may (1) the primary laser beam or beams; (2) any secondary beams of the same or different wavelengths obtained by reflection, refraction, diffusion, scattering, modulation, scanning, or harmonic or parametric conversion of the primary laser beam or beams; and (3) any rad

8、iation emitted by a laser pump source. Application of this scheme requires definition of the magnitudes of laser system radiation to be considered acceptable for exposure to the human - EIA LEB1 70 3234bOO 000bL89 T eye or to the human skin. These magnitudes are purposefully not specified herein, be

9、cause the thresholds of damage are not known for all kinds of laser system radiation, and are subject to dispute and periodic re-evaluation. e All laser equipment and installations are grouped into four main categories, defined in Section 2.2, and aye further subdivided into three subcategories, def

10、ined in Sec tion 2.3 2.2 Main Categories The Main Categories are based on varying degrees of radiation confinement and control, as follows: I. II. . III. IV. Excluded Access: The laser system radiations are fully contained in an enclosure or area fromwhich people are physically excluded during the o

11、peration of the laser. Emission Controlled: The laser system radiations are partially contained in an enclosure or area from which people are physically excluded during the operation of the laser. Under all conditions of operation any laser system radiation from the enclosure or area is at levels co

12、nsidered accept- able for human exposure, Gontro1.1.ed Area: The laser system radiations are contained in an area which is accessible to humans, but which is controlled by a responsible operator. Noncontrolled Installation: The laser is operated without control over human exposure to the laser syste

13、m radiations. 2,3 Subcategories The subcategories are based on carying degrees of hazard from laser system radiation generated within the laser equipment and are defined as follows: -2- EIA LEB1 70 3234b00 000b190 b Subcategory A - Non-hazardous emission: - Under all conditions of operation the lase

14、r system radiation generated within the laser equipment is at levels considered acceptable for human exposure. Subcaiegory B - Eye-hazardous emission: The laser system radiation generated within the laser equipment may be of a type and magnitude capable of injuring the eye, but under all conditions of operation it is at levels considered acceptable for exposure to the skin. Subcateogry C - Eye-and-skin hazardous emission: The laser system radiation generated within the laser equipment may be injurious to the eye and to the skin. -3-
