39、es underlying the architecture of the Mobile End System (M-ES) and the role that the M-ES plays in the CDPD Network. Functional Description The M-ES is the End System that accesses the CDPD Network over the wireless interface. It may be physically mobile or stationary, but is considered as always be
40、ing potentially mobile, subject to any access restrictions imposed on it. Its application functions may be restricted to endpoint functions, such as providing wireless access for a virtual terminal application, or it may perform intermediate relay functions, such as providing network connectivity to
41、 allow remote End Systems to access CDPD via a private LAN. Such distinctions are totally transparent to the CDPD Network and the specification. Application Services The range of application services that may be available on an M-ES is comparab
43、le to those available on any other terminal device, and includes additional possibilities that are viable because of the broadcast nature of the wireless environment. Examples of M-ES application services include: o o File transfer o Electronic mail o Paging notifications o Transfer of telemetry dat
44、a o Broadcast and multicast applications. M-ES applications make use of standard protocols where possible. The protocol structures required to support certain widely used applications, notably virtual terminal access, are specified as application subprofiles in IS-732-3101. Terminal access to remote
45、 computing facilities Support Services The M-ES provides the user of the CDPD Network with the following support services: o o Transmission and reception of data across the airlink, on either a full- duplex or a half-duplex basis Medium access control to the airlink to ensure that M-ES transmissions
46、 do not interfere with transmission of other M-ESs or non-CDPD devices Mobile data link procedures to support: o Point-to-point reliable sequenced delivery of data between the M-ES and the Mobile Data Intermediate System (MD-IS) 3 Broadcast delivery of data to M-ESs o Delivery of data to M-ESs that
47、are operating in a power- conservation mode called sleep mode o Multicast delivery of data to M-ESs.
