27、TIA-455-104B 2 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Intent. The intent of this test is to determine the effects of repeated flexions on a fiber optic cable. These flexions may be performed at some specified temperature. 1.2 Scope. This procedure is designed to measure permanent and/or transient optical transmittance

28、changes and requires the assessment of any damage occurring to other cable components. 1.3 Failure Modes- Potential failure modes for this test include, but are not limited to: a. Loss of optical continuity, either during or at the end of the test, b. Degradation transmittance performance, c. Fiber

29、breakage or other physical damage, d. Other failure modes as may be stated in the Detail Specification. 2 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS The following documents form a part of this FOTP to the extent specified herein: TIA-455 “Standard Test Procedures for Fiber Optic Fibers, Cables, Transducers, Sensors, Conn

30、ecting and Terminating Devices, and Other Fiber Optic Components“ FOTP-13 (TIA-455-13) “Visual and Mechanical Inspection of Fiber, Cables, Connectors and/or Other Fiber Optic Devices“ FOTP-20 (TIA-455-20) “Measurement of Change in Optical Transmittance“ IEC 60794-1-21 “Optical fibre cables Part 1-21

31、: Generic specification Basic optical cable test procedures Mechanical test methods” 3 APPARATUS The following apparatus and equipment is required to perform this test: 3.1 Device For Verifying The Number of Transmitting Fibers. If measurements of change in optical transmittance are not required, us

32、e any suitable equipment to determine the number of transmitting fibers. (Note: Wherever the term, “number of transmitting fibers,“ appears in this procedure, it shall be understood to mean the number of fibers displaying optical continuity.). 3.2 Device For Measuring Optical Power Transmission. If

33、measurements of change in optical transmittance are required, use a suitable device for measuring optical power transmission as described in FOTP-20. Operating wavelengths and modulation methods shall be as specified in the Detail Specification. 3.3 Flexing Device, Use a suitable flexing device, suc

34、h as illustrated in Figure 1. The flexing arm shall have an adjustable clamp or fixture to permit holding the cable securely during the entire test. The clamping fixture shall not crush the optical fibers during the test. Unless ANSI/TIA-455-104B 3 otherwise specified in the Detail Specification, th

35、e flexing arc shall be 90 from the reference position and the flexing speed shall be 30 cycles per minute. (Devices having adjustable flexing arcs and adjustable flexing speeds may be used if not prohibited by the Detail Specification, but the amount of swing of the cable shall be limited.) Figure 1

36、 Typical Cyclic Flexing Apparatus 3.4 Flexing Sheaves. (Note: The term, “sheaves“ as used throughout this procedure shall be understood to mean any appropriate flexing plates, mandrels, etc. used to control the configuration of the cable bend, and is not intended to require the use of true sheaves o

37、r grooved wheels.) Attach pairs of sheaves at a definite distance from the flex arm clamp, positioned such that they will not prevent free movement of the cable. It is recommended that there be 1 to 3 mm of clearance on each side between the cable and the sheaves in order to prevent undue friction o

38、n the cable at the flexing point. Use sheaves as shown in Figure 1 and as listed in Table I. Unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification, the following default maximum values apply, in cases where the exact sheave diameter is not available a suitable sheave may be used such that its diame

39、ter is smaller than the stated maximum: 3.4.1 For all except U.S. Military applications, use sheaves per Table I, Sheave Designation Letter B. 3.4.2 For U.S. Military applications only, use sheaves per Table I, Sheaf Designation Letter E. Apply sufficient force to the cable to keep it in contact with the sheaves while flexing. Manual force or weights ma

When used, weights (mass) shall be attached to or suspended from the cable under test. The minimum load to be applied is usually dependent upon the outside diameter (and, to some extent,

42、 the stiffness) of the cable under test. Increase the load if necessary to ensure full quadrant contact of the cable with the sheaves during testing. Unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification. 3.5.1 Unless otherwise specified, and for all except U.S. Military applications, manual force

The chamber shall maintain the required temperature within 1 C ( 1.8 F) throughout the duration of the test. The chamber inside dimensions shall be sufficient to accommodate the physical test ap

The chamber shall be equipped with an access port (or stuffing box) through which the fiber or cable ends and instrument wires or other leads will exit the chamber. The access port shall adequ

If temperature recording is required (mandatory for U.S. Military applications, unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification), the following criterion applies: Use temperature recording devices to provide a record of the temperature throughout the test. It may be desirable to have a multi-channel recorder so that thermocouples can be placed around the specimen to record its temperature. The recorder shall have an accuracy of
