This FOTP is from TIA Standards Proposal No. 3854, formulated under

、the cognizance of TIA FO-6.7, Subcommittee on Fiber Optic Cable. This FOTP is part of the series of test procedures included within Recommended Standard TINEIA-455. NOTE: This FOTP was previously published in EIA-455-84B as FOTP-84. There is one annex, which is informative. Key words: Sticking, temp

、ptic cable on a reel, drum, or spool, to withstand elevated temperature for prolonged periods of time without sticking to itself on adjacent turns or layers. 2 Normative references The following documents form a part of this FOTP to the extent specified herein: EIA/TIA-455-A, Standard test procedure

、s for fiber optic fibers, cables, transducers, sensors, connecting and terminating devices, and other fiber optic components, FOTP-13 (EIA-455-13), Visual and mechanical inspection of fibers, cables, connectors and/or other fiber optic devices. 1 STDSEIA TIA-455-BqB-ENGL 1772 E 3234b00 Ob14355 2b5 T

、INEIA-455-84B 3 Apparatus The following apparatus and equipment is required to perform this test: 3.1 Metal spool Use a metal spool which has a barrel or drum diameter of 30 to 50 times the outside diameter of the fiber optic cable under test. The flanges of the spool shall be such that the ends of

、the cable specimen can be attached to them. 3.2 Chamber Use a test chamber with a volume of sufficient size such that the specimen within it will not interfere with the generation and maintenance of the prescribed test conditions. The heat source shall be located such that the radiant heat will not

、fall directly on the specimen. 3.3 Temperature probe Unless othewise specified, use thermocouples or equivalent temperature sensors to determine the temperature within the chamber and to control the chamber temperature. 2 4 Sampling and specimens TINEiA-455-84B The test specimen shall be a represent

、ative sample of a completed fiber optic cable. Specimen length shall be at least 1,500 times the finished diameter of the cable (see 5.2). 5 Procedure 5.1 Attach one end of the cable specimen to the spool. 5.2 Wind three layers of the specimen cable on the spool drum with a minimum of three close tu

、rns in each layer such that the wind arrangement is mechanically stable. Excercise care to ensure that the individual turns are in intimate contact with the adjacent turns. Winding tension shall be uniform and sufficient to ensure intimate contact on the spool. Minimum winding tension shall be 10 N

、(2.25 Ibf). 5.3 After winding, attach the remaining (outside) end of the specimen to the spool and secure it in such a manner as to ensure that no unwinding or loosening of the specimen can occur 5.4 Place the spooled specimen in the test chamber. Unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specificati

、on, maintain the temperature of the chamber at 71 5 2 OC for a period of 48 hours. 5.5 After temperature conditioning has been completed, remover the spooled specimen from the chamber and allow it to return to room temperature. (In case of dispute, refer to the standard atmospheric conditions of EIN

、TIA-455-A.) 5.6 After the spool has stabilized at room ambient, manually unwind the entire cable specimen from the spool while evaluating it for any unwinding difficulty, and while visually examining for evidence of adhesion (blocking) of adjacent turns. Refer to FOTP-I 3, but note that magnificatio

、n is not required except in case of dispute. 3 TINEIA-455-846 6 Calculations or interpretation of results 6.1 Calculations No calculations are required by this procedure. 6.2 Interpretation Interpret and report the extent of adhesion according to the following criteria: CRITERIA CLASSIFACTION CODE O

、BSERVEDRESULTS OF ADHESION A No Adhesion None B C D 6.3 Precision and bias Specimen easily removed. Mild Cosmetic damage only. Specimen removed with some Moderate difficulty. Slight damage consisting, for example, of pieces of the covering (cable jacket) removed so that the cross-sectional area of t

、he cable is altered, but not to such a degree that the cable core is exposed. The functional integrity of the cable is not jeopardized. Specimen cannot be removed Severe (unwound) without catastrophic damage (for example, cable core exposed). The functional integrity of the cable Ueopardized. The pr

、ecision of this test has not been determined. No statement can be made about the bias of this test for jacket self adhesion since the result merely states whether there is conformance to the criteria for success specified in the procedure or Detail Specification. 4 STD-EIA TIA-455-84B-ENGL 1792 3234

、b00 Ob14358 T74 TINE lA-455-84 B 7 Documentation 7.1 Report the following information for each test: 7.1.1 Date of test. 7.1.2 Identification of procedure used (FOTP-84 and title). 7.1.3 Identification of the fiber optic cable tested and any other applicable data, including measured outside cable di

、ameter. 7.1.4 Drum or barrel diameter of spool. 7.1.5 Test conditions (test time and temperature). 7.1.6 Results of the examinations (classifications of adhesion). 7.1.7 Other significant information to provide documentation and traceability of the test equipment, methods, operation, or other releva

、nt information. 7.2 United States military applications require that the following information also be reported for each test. For other (nonmilitary) applications, this information need not be reported but shall be available for review upon request. 7.2.1 Test personnel. 7.2.2 Specific information

、on test equipment used (e.g., model numbers, serial numbers, etc., and calibration dates). 5 STD.EIA TIA-455-ti4B-ENGL 1992 D 323Yb00 Ob14359 900 D TINEIA-455-84B 8 Specification information The following information shall be specified in the Detail Specification: 8.1 A reference to this test proced

、ure if it is to be used. 8.2 Exceptions or deviations that apply to this test procedure. 8.3 Acceptance or failure criteria, using codes (6.2) or other requirements. 8.4 Test duration and number of samples to be tested. 8.5 Testing temperature, if other than specified in 5.4. 6 STD-EIA TIA-455-84B-ENGL 1792 = 323i-ib b143b b22 TINE lA-455-84 B Annex A (informative) Comparison between this FOTP and IEC or ITU-T requirements It should be noted that, as of this publication date, there are no known IEC or ITU-T test methods that are comparable to this FOTP. 7
