29、tandard was developed in response to a requirement of TIA Committee TR45.3 for a DTE/DCE interface standard for Digital Cellular equipment. Although intended for that specific use, this Standard could be used for other DTE/DCE interfaces of a more general nature. iii ANSITTINEIA-688 i SCOPE 1 .I Sec

30、tion abstracts This Standard is applicable to the interconnection of data terminal equipment (DTE) and data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE) employing serial binary data interchange. It defines: Section 2 NORMATIVE REFERENCES Section 3 SIGNAL CHARACTERISTICS Section 4 INTERFACE MECHANICAL CHARACT

31、ERISTICS Section 5 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF INTERCHANGE CIRCUITS 1.2 Application This Standard applies where equipment on one side of the DTE/DCE interface is intended for connection directly to equipment on the other side without additional technical considerations. Applications where cable termin

32、ation, signal waveshaping, interconnection cable distance, and mechanical configurations of the interface must be tailored to meet specific user needs are not precluded but are beyond the scope of this Standard. 1.3 Serialization This Standard applies to data communication systems where the data is

33、bit serialized. No restrictions are placed on the sequence of bits. 1.4 Signaling rates This Standard is applicable for use at data signaling rates up to a nominal limit of 128 kbis. Equipment complying with this Standard, however, need not operate over this entire data signaling rate range. Equipme

34、nt may be designed to operate over a narrower range as appropriate for the specific application. 1.5 Synchronouslnonsynchronous communication This Standard applies to both synchronous and nonsynchronous serial binary data communication systems. 2 NORMATIVE REFERENCES The following Standard contains

35、provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this Standard. At the time of publication, the edition indicated was valid. 37、naling Rates up to 572 kbps 3 SIGNAL CHARACTERISTICS 3.1 Electrical characteristics The electrical characteristics of the interchange circuits are specified in ANSITTIAIEIA-694. The meaning of circuit conditions ON“ and OFF“ for control and timing circuits, and “l“, “O“ for data circuits, shall be a

38、s defined in ANSI/TIA/EIA-694. 3.2 Protective ground (frame ground) In DTEs and in DCEs, protective ground is a point that is electrically bonded to the equipment frame. It may also be connected to external grounds (e.g., through the third wire of the power cord). It should be noted that protective

39、ground (frame ground) is not an interchange circuit in this Standard. If bonding of the equipment frames of the DCE and the DTE is necessary, a separate conductor should be used that conforms to the appropriate national or local electrical codes. Attention is called to the applicable Underwriters La

40、boratories regulation applying to wire size and color coding. 3.3 Shield Normally the DCE should make no connection to shield. It is recognized that for certain electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression situations, additional provisions may be necessary but are beyond the scope of this Standard

41、. 3.4 Signai common Proper operation of the interchange circuits requires the presence of a path between the DTE circuit common and the DCE circuit common. This path is obtained by means of interchange Circuit 102, Signal Common. Within the DCE, this circuit shall be brought to one point and it shal

42、l be possible to connect this point to Protective Ground by means of a strap inside the equipment, if such protective ground exists. This strap may be connected or removed, at installation, as required to meet applicable regulations or to minimize the introduction of noise into the electronic circui

43、try. This strap may be paralleled by an impedance (high at low frequencies) to provide, when the strap is removed, for immunity to static discharges or for other purposes. 2 - STD-EIA TIA-b88-ENGL 1998 H 3234600 0598151 863 ANSITTINEIA-688 3.5 “Fail Safe” operation The receivers for interchange Circ

44、uits 107 (DCE Ready), 108/2 (DTE Ready) and NSF (Nonstandard Function) shall detect any of the following as a circuit-off condition: the equipment connected across the interface is in a power-off condition, the interface cable is disconnected, or the interconnecting cable does not implement the circ

45、uit. The specification of “fail safe” operation is found in ANSI/TINEIA-694. 4 INTERFACE MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS 4.1 12-Position interface connector The point of demarcation between the DTE and the DCE is located at a pluggable connector signal interface point between the two equipments that is l

46、ess than 3 meters (10 feet) from the DCE (see Figure 1). A 12-position connector is the connector specified for all interchange circuits. An optional coaxial connector may be included for radio frequency connection of digital cellular equipment. The connector associated with the DTE shall have femal

47、e contacts and a male shell, The connector associated with the DCE shall have male contacts and a female shell. Figure 2 illustrates the DTE interface connector that has female contacts and a male shell. Figure 3 illustrates the DCE interface connector that has male contacts and a female shell. Cont
