7、user assembly and normal use do not result in a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury topersons; andb) The materials and components are used within their mechanical, electrical, and temperaturelimits.SB3.1.2 An office furniture building mounting system shall be assembled and mounted to the buildin
8、gsurface in accordance with the manufacturers installation instructions.SB3.1.3 The hardware and fasteners used to secure the office furnishing system to the building shall besupplied by the office furnishing manufacturer or shall be specified in sufficient detail in the installationinstructions to
9、insure the installer can properly secure the office furnishing to the building structure.SB3.2 Flammability of MaterialsSB3.2.1 The furnishing and mounting system shall comply with section 19.9.SB3.2.2 A combustible office furnishing building mounting system that covers more than 10 ft2(0.93 m2)of a
10、 wall or ceiling building surface, in any combination of assembly recommended by the installationinstructions, shall be tested in accordance with the Standard for Test for Surface Burning Characteristicsof Building Materials, UL 723. A combustible joining system used to connect individual combustibl
11、e panelsshall be tested in combination with the combustible panel.a) The flame-spread index shall be marked on each combustible panel as specified in SB7.1,andb) The smoke developed index shall be marked on each combustible panel as specified inSB7.1.SB3.2.3 The test results from the Standard for Te
12、st for Surface Burning Characteristics of BuildingMaterials, UL 723 shall be less than or equal to 200 Flame Spread and less than or equal to 450 SmokeDeveloped.SB4.0 MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE TESTSSB4.1.1 Mold Stress TestSB4.1.2 A office furnishing mounting system incorporating a thermoplastic materia
13、l used to support orcarry a structural load whose failure would result in a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons shallwithstand the temperature-stability conditions described in SB4.1.3. Thermoplastic material shall not haveany shrinkage, warpage, or other distortion of the polymeric m
14、aterials, resulting in a risk of fire, electricshock, or injury to persons.SB4.1.3 An unloaded representative office furnishing mounting system is to be placed in a full-draftcirculating-air oven. The air temperature within the oven is to be maintained at 70C (158F) or 10Chigher than the temperature
15、 obtained during the temperature test for 7 hours. The mounting system isallowed to cool to room temperature before conducting the Mounting Securement Test, Section SB4.3.SB4.2 Adhesive TestSB4.2.1 An office furnishing mounting system utilizing adhesives whose failure would result in a risk offire,

17、all be conditioned as follows:a) One system shall be placed in an air-circulating oven for: 7 days at 100 1.0C (212 1.8F),or 16 days at 90 1.0C (194 1.8F ) or 21 days at 87 1.0C (188 1.8F) or 60 days at 821.0C (179 1.8F); andb) One system shall be conditioned for 7 days in an environment of 85 5 per
18、cent relativehumidity at 32.0 2.0C (89.6 3.6F).Following the adhesive conditioning test the office furnishing mounting system shall be subjected to theMounting Securement Test, Section SB4.3.SB4.3 Mounting Securement TestSB4.3.1 An office furnishing mounting system shall be constructed so there is n
19、o cracking, bending,distortion, or similar damage, to the mounting system, securement means, supporting structure, or anycombination thereof, to the point where any part of the office furnishing mounting system collapses, pullsloose from the building mounting surface or results in the loss of servic
20、eability when loaded in accordancewith sections 32-34.SB4.3.2 The office furnishing mounting system shall be configured in accordance with the following:a) Shelves, platforms, brackets, tables and compartments intended to be attached orsuspended from the mounting system, shall be assembled and secur
21、ed to the mounting system;b) The fasteners and anchors provided or recommended by the manufacturer to be used tosecure the system to the building structure shall be used;c) Tests shall be performed on each of the building surfaces and types to which themanufacturer recommends the mount to be secured
22、 in the installation instructions;d) The mounting and furniture system shall be loaded as specified in sections 32-34; ande) The mounting and furniture system that is adaptable to more than one size or more than oneconfiguration and determined to present different risks than represented by any oneco
23、nfiguration shall be investigated for use with all combinations necessary to determinecompliance with these requirements.SB5.0 Building Mounting SurfacesSB5.1.1 The following building surface constructions are provided for reference. The manufacturer mayspecify other building constructions the syste
24、m is designed for use with. The installation instructions shallbe used to determine the minimum structural building construction limitations that the office furnishingmounting system is intended for use with. Manufactured structural members (trusses, laminated lumber,manufactured I beams of wood or
25、metal) shall be described in sufficient detail to insure the installer canproperly identify the building structure that the mounting system has been investigated for use with.SB5.2 Common Building Materials and Building Surface ArrangementsSB5.2.1 Concrete shall be proportioned so that the 28 day co

27、IBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULSB5.2.2 Masonry anchors shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Forperformance tests in concrete the mounting surface should be provided with at least 3 inches (76 mm) ofconcrete from the edge to the anchor. The concrete thickness shall
28、 be at least 3.5 inches (88 mm) thick.SB5.2.3 Concrete block shall comply with the Standard Specification for Loadbearing Concrete MasonryUnits, ASTM C90.SB5.2.4 Clay brick material shall comply with the Standard Specification for Facing Brick (Solid MasonryUnits Made from Clay or Shale), ASTM C216.
29、SB5.2.5 Fasteners intended for use in structural steel are to be driven into steel having thickness(es)recommended by the manufacturer. The structural steel shall have hardness values (Brinnell) of not lessthan 160 nor more than 240.SB5.2.6 For a wood stud wall the minimum wood stud size (such as 2
30、by 4 or 2 by 6), the minimum andmaximum stud spacing, and the maximum specified wall covering thickness (such as Gypsum drywall,lath, and plaster) shall be used for the test. The wood studs shall be graded in accordance with theAmerican Softwood Lumber Standard No. PS 20 and shall be Grade No. 2. Fo
31、r a typical 2 by 4 or 2 by6 wood stud, the fastening means used to secure the mounting system to the wood studs shall be securedto the thin edge of the stud, the 1-1/2 inch (38 mm) width.SB5.2.7 For a steel stud the minimum stud size (such as 2 by 4 or 2 by 6), the minimum and maximumstud spacing, a
32、nd the minimum specified wall covering thickness (such as Gypsum drywall, lath, andplaster) shall be used for the test. Gypsum wallboard shall be standard non-fire-rated, secured to thestuds with screws 12 inches (305 mm) on center. The steel studs shall be 0.018 inch (25 Gauge) thickand comply to t
33、he North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members,AISI S100 or AISI S211 requirements. For a typical 2 by 4 or 2 by 6 steel stud, the fastening means usedto secure the mounting system to the steel studs shall be secured to the thin edge of the stud, the 1-1/2inch
34、 (38 mm) width.SB5.2.8 The mounting system manufacturer shall specify the minimum acceptable structural member byweb width and thickness for structural steel. The minimum diameter and thickness of round columns shallbe specified. The mounting system shall be installed to the vertical or horizontal s
35、tructural steel beam orcolumn with the minimum size and quantity of fasteners recommended by the mounting systemmanufacturer.SB6.0 Installation InstructionsSB6.1 Installation instructions shall be illustrated and shall include directions and information required tocomplete the intended installation
36、of the office furnishing mounting system, and its related parts, includingreference to accessories tested for use with the office furnishing mounting system. The installationinstructions are to be provided in accordance with section 39.SB6.2 The instructions shall contain at least the following info
37、rmation in regards to the mounting surfaceswith which it has been investigated for use:a) The wall, ceiling, floor type or types with which the mounting system was investigated foruse. For example, wood stud, steel stud, concrete, concrete block, clay brick, gypsum wallboard, lath and plaster or oth

45、e abbreviated FHC 12/47.RATIONALE FOR DECISION:Office furnishings are being offered with the ability to utilize the structure of the building for support andstability. Supplement SB to UL 1286 will address the connection to the building. When the office furnishingsystem covers a portion of the build
46、ing wall or ceiling the covering becomes a building finish material. Thefire and building codes require flammability ratings of these finishes. To address the code flammabilityrequirements testing to UL 723 for surface flammability is required. Marking of the flammability rating onthe office furnish
