14、ETALLIC CONTAINERS FOR WASTE PAPER - UL 242 3UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION OR DISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL INTRODUCTION 1 Scope 1.1 These requirements cover portable, nonmetallic containers for waste paper intended primarily for temporary, indoor storage

15、of waste paper and other similar materials. These containers are intended to be emptied regularly and their contents disposed of. 1.2 Nonmetallic containers for waste paper are investigated with regard to their ability to contain burning paper without contributing fuel to the re. Observations regard

16、ing other risks, including the physiological effects, in any form, resulting from combustion of the container to any degree and regarding the efficiency or effectiveness of the container and its intended use, are not within the scope of these requirements. 1.3 These requirements cover nonmetallic co

17、ntainers with a capacity of 8 gallons (30 L) or less. Larger containers will be investigated using these and additional requirements, as applicable. 1.4 Containers covered by these requirements may be either wholly or partially formed of molded polymeric material. 2 General 2.1 Components 2.1.1 Exce

18、pt as indicated in 2.1.2, a component of a product covered by this standard shall comply with the requirements for that component. 2.1.2 A component is not required to comply with a specic requirement that: a) Involves a feature or characteristic not required in the application of the component in t

19、he product covered by this standard, or b) Is superseded by a requirement in this standard. 2.1.3 A component shall be used in accordance with its rating established for the intended conditions of use. 2.1.4 Specic components are incomplete in construction features or restricted in performance capab

20、ilities. Such components are intended for use only under limited conditions, such as certain temperatures not exceeding specied limits, and shall be used only under those specic conditions. 21、FURTHER REPRODUCTION OR DISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL 2.2 Terminology 2.2.1 The term “container” as used herein refers to a nonmetallic container for waste paper. 2.3 Units of Measurement 2.3.1 Values stated without parentheses are the requirement. Values in parentheses are explanatory or

22、approximate information. 2.4 Undated References 2.4.1 Any undated reference to a code or standard appearing in the requirements of this standard shall be interpreted as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard. CONSTRUCTION 3 General 3.1 Containers shall be formed of material having

23、the strength necessary to withstand abuses likely to be encountered in service. 3.2 Polymeric material shall: a) Be classed V-1 or less ammable in accordance with the Standard for Tests for Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances, UL 94; or b) Comply with the requiremen

24、ts in the External Fire Test, Section 7. 3.3 Containers shall be free from defects that can impair their intended function. PERFORMANCE 4 General 4.1 Eight samples of each container size being investigated are to be subjected to the Drop Test, Section 5. Four of these samples are then to be subjecte

25、d to the Internal Fire Test, Section 6. The remaining four samples are to be subjected to the External Fire Test, Section 7. Exception: For a container that complies with the requirement of 3.2(a), four samples are needed for the drop test and internal re test. The external re test is not conducted.

27、e re tests specied in Sections 6 and 7, after being tested as specied in 5.2. 5.2 Four samples of each container size being investigated are to be dropped ve times from a height of 5 feet (1.52 m) onto a concrete oor so as to strike once on the bottom, the top, the side, a top corner, and a bottom c

28、orner. 6 Internal Fire Test 6.1 When tested as specied in 6.3 6.7, a container shall remain in a standing position. The sides shall not collapse to the extent that the sample will no longer contain the contents. Some distortion or softening is acceptable; however, there shall be no perforation of th

29、e bottom or sides of the container caused by softening or melting. The container shall not ignite and continue to burn, and shall not expel burning or glowing particles of the container. 6.2 The temperature attained on the plywood during the tests shall not exceed 175C (347F). 6.3 Four containers ar

30、e to be located in a draft free room and prepared for test as specied in 6.4 6.6. 6.4 Three containers are to be lled with shredded and uffed newspaper. One container is to be one-third full, the second is to be two-thirds full, and the third is to be completely full. The shredded and uffed newspape

31、r, when in place in the container, is to have a bulk density of 5.1 ounces per cubic foot (5.16 kg/m 3 ). 6.5 The fourth container is to be completely lled with new, empty, plastic-coated paper milk cartons, of the 1/2 pint (1.4 L) size, and wrinkled sheets of carbon paper weighing 2.35 0.1 grams pe

32、r 8.5 11 inch sheet. The container is to be lled by alternating layers of milk cartons and layers of carbon paper with an overall ratio of one sheet of carbon paper per each milk carton until level with the top edge of the container and with a resulting density of 0.29 0.05 grams per cubic inches. T

33、he tops of the milk cartons are to be attened to make a cube shape. 6.6 Each container is to be placed on a 3/4 inch (19 mm) thick plywood sheet that is painted black. The container is to be freestanding and away from any walls or other obstructions. Three thermocouples are to be placed on the surfa

34、ce of the plywood under the containers that are: a) Two-thirds full, and b) Completely full of shredded newspaper, on a line simulating the longitudinal axis of the base of the container if rectangular, or on a line representing the diameter if cylindrical. 6.7 To ignite the contents in each contain

35、er, a lighted match is to be placed on the top center of the contents. 6.8 The contents are to continue burning until no particles are glowing. 36、ERMISSION FROM UL 7 External Fire Test 7.1 When tested as specied in 7.2 7.4, a container shall remain in a standing position. Some distortion or softening is acceptable; however, the container shall not ignite. The container shall still be capable of retaining its contents without having contribute

37、d to the external re. Exception: A container that complies with the requirement in 3.2(a), need not be subjected to this test. 7.2 Four containers not subjected to the Internal Fire Test, Section 6, are to be placed one at a time against a wall of noncombustible material. 7.3 Two of the four contain

38、ers are to be surrounded by 1 pound (0.45 kg) of shredded, uffed newspaper, distributed on the oor and against the exposed sides from one-third to one-half the height of each container. The other two containers are to be surrounded by 2 pounds (0.91 kg) of shredded, uffed newspaper distributed in th

39、e same manner. 7.4 Ignition of the shredded newspaper is to be accomplished by placing lighted matches on the top outermost edge of the shredded newspaper at six equidistant locations around each container. MARKING 8 General 8.1 Each container for waste paper shall be legibly marked with the manufac

40、turers or vendors name or identifying symbol or some other distinctive marking by which it may be identied as the product of a particular manufacturer. 8.2 If a manufacturer produces containers at more than one factory, each container shall have a distinctive marking to identify it as the product of a particular factory.
