、600 volts are becoming more commonplace, and accepted as lowvoltage wiring in the National Electrical Code. The NEC was revised in 2014 to raise the long-acceptedthreshold of 600 V to 1000 V. While there have been proposals to raise this level to 2000 volts, theseproposals were not accepted as an ac

、ross-the-board practice, with voltage limits of 1500 V morecommon in alternative energy applications. While this upper limit for low voltage wiring is evolving, theimpact to connectors is less dynamic, as the connector is not impacted by concerns such as switching.Since the NEC establishes that cond

、uctors operating above 2000 volts as the break-point at whichshielded cable is generally required (See NEC 310.10(E), this Certification Requirement Decision (CRD)establishes 2000 volts as the new limit for insulated splicing wire connectors. The 1000 volt rating for signsand luminaires remains with

、 the specific marking for those applications, however it is no longer necessaryto identify that rating in clause 1.5 as that value would fall within the range of the new ratings. This CRDalso aligns with a CRD that accomplishes the same addition in UL 486A-486B.This CRD provides rating break points

、at 1000 Volts (present NEC level for low voltage), 1500 Volts(more common break point for alternative energy applications), and 2000 volts (upper limit established asnoted in the preceding paragraph). The test values for Puncture/Flashover in Table 2 are based on thefollowing:Puncture 4X Rated + 100

、0Flashover 10X Rated +1000The test values in Table 29 are based on a calculation of 40% of the Flashover test voltage from Table28. While this aligns with the existing 300 V value, it is different than what is used for the 600 V value(which is 37.5% of the Flashover Test Voltage from Table 28). Howe

、ver, use of the 40% value is the moreconservative approach to an extension of the test values in Table 28 to the test values in Table 22.Copyright 2016 UL LLCUL LLC, in performing its functions in accordance with its objectives, does not guarantee or warrant thecorrectness of Certification Requireme
