5、ne or morelayers of stranded members (primary groups), each member shall be considered equivalent to a solidwire, and as such, shall be spliced as a unit. These joints shall not be any closer together than 2 laylengths.4.1.7.3 A joint shall be allowed in a Class B stranded 2.08 mm2(14 AWG), 3.31 mm2

The joint (butt splice) shall be made by machinebrazing or welding the entire conductor such that the resulting solid section of the stranded conduc

In addition, the joint shall not increase the diameter of the conductor, there shall be no sharp points, and the distance between joints in a single conductor shall not averageless than 1000 m (3280 ft) in any finished length of that single insulated conductor.

8、 A joint (butt splice)shall be made before or after insulating and prior to further processing. Where joints (butt splices) aremade after insulating, the insulation applied over the joint shall be of the same insulation material usedthroughout the length of the conductor, or of another insulating ma

Insulated conductorswith a joint (butt splice) shall not be surface marked with a t

10、ype designation.RATIONALE FOR DECISION:UL 83 permits butt splicing on 14-10 AWG stranded conductors. The standard also allows 8 AWGconductors to be solid, but it does not currently permit a butt splice in a stranded 8 AWG conductor. Sincebutt splicing joins all of the strands into a short length of

11、solid conductor and 8 AWG is permitted to besolid throughout the complete conductor, the range of conductors that are permitted to be butt splicedshould be expanded to include 8 AWG. This is consistent with the range of permitted solid conductors inmultiple conductor cable standards.Copyright 2014 U
