Theseproducts are intended to be installed on a hose nozzle valve at the fueling facility. The reader is used toverify

6、that an authorized vehicle is being refueled at the location when used in combination with a similardevice located on the vehicle.1.2 In accordance with 1.1, the mating device on the vehicle is not included in the evaluation of productscovered under this outline.1.3 These devices are only intended t

7、o be used on hose nozzle valves that are suitable for use with oneor more of the fluids shown below.a) Gasoline formulated in accordance with the Standard Specification for Automotive Spark-Ignition Fuel, ASTM D4814;b) Gasoline/ethanol blends at levels designated as gasohol (E10 maximum) formulated

8、inaccordance with ASTM D4814, when blended with denatured fuel ethanol formulated inaccordance with the Standard Specification for Denatured Fuel Ethanol for Blending withGasolines for Use as Automotive Spark-Ignition Engine Fuel, ASTM D4806; orc) Diesel fuel formulated in accordance with the Standa

9、rd Specification for Diesel Fuel Oils,ASTM D975.1.4 This outline does not cover any other type of control device for dispensing equipment, which arecovered by the Standard for Control Equipment for Use with Flammable Liquid Dispensing Devices, UL1238.2 General2.1 Components2.1.1 Except as indicated

10、in 2.1.2, a component of a product covered by this outline shall comply with therequirements for that component.2.1.2 A component is not required to comply with a specific requirement that:a) Involves a feature or characteristic not required in the application of the component in theproduct covered

14、 to the latest edition of that code or standard.3 Glossary3.1 For the purpose of this outline, the following definitions apply.3.2 GENERAL PURPOSE ENCLOSURE A metallic or nonmetallic enclosure that is not required tobe explosion proof.3.3 HOSE NOZZLE VALVE A valve designed for an operating pressure

15、of 50 psi (345 kPa)minimum, and intended for use at the outlet end of a hose for dispensing fuels.3.4 INTRINSICALLY SAFE CIRCUIT A circuit in which any spark or thermal effect, produced eithernormally or in specified fault conditions, is incapable of causing ignition of a mixture of flammable orcomb

16、ustible material in air in the mixtures most easily ignitable concentration.CONSTRUCTION4 General4.1 Each product shall be provided with an enclosure that houses all electrical components. Thisenclosure may be provided with openings measuring 5 mm maximum in any dimension and shall complywith the ap

17、plicable enclosure tests as described in 4.2 and 4.3.Exception: If the electrical circuitry within the device is considered intrinsically safe without reliance uponinfallible creepage or clearance separations and the circuit does not contain protective components, thenthe enclosure does not need to

18、comply with the enclosure tests in this standard.4.2 The enclosure material shall comply with the applicable material requirements, excluding Ball Impacttesting, in the Standard for Control Equipment for Use With Flammable Liquid Dispensing Devices, UL1238.4.3 Nonmetallic materials used for the encl

19、osure or protection of the enclosure shall comply with theDimensional Stability Test, Section 9.Exception: Nonmetallic materials used to close off an opening with maximum dimensions not exceeding5 mm are not required to be subjected to the Dimensional Stability Test.SEPTEMBER 28, 2012 UL 1238A 5UL C

20、OPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL4.4 The electrical circuitry of the product shall be evaluated to the applicable requirements in theStandard for Intrinsically Safe Apparatus and Associated Apparatus for Use in Class I, II, and III,

21、 Division1, Hazardous (Classified) Locations, UL 913.4.5 Automatic hose nozzle valves are required to separate or break so that the valve body and the spoutseparate. Some hose nozzle valves are provided with a shear groove that aides this break. Theinstallation of a reader may interfere with the sep

22、aration or breakage such that the valve body an the spoutdo not separate. In order to verify that this does not occur, hose nozzle valves intended to be used withthis reader shall be subjected to the Pull Test, Section 6, under all of the following conditions:a) When installed as intended, the reade

23、r covers the shear groove on the spout orb) When installed as intended, the reader covers any part of the spout for hose nozzle valvesnot provided with a shear groove.4.6 Fluid confining parts of the hose nozzle reader shall be metallic materials. These parts shall complywith the Deformation Test, E

24、xternal Leakage Test, and Hydrostatic Strength Test in the Standard for HoseNozzle Valves, UL 2586.5 Batteries5.1 Batteries provided in products covered by this outline shall comply with one of the followingstandards:a) Standard for Lithium Batteries, UL 1642 orb) Standard for Household and Commerci

25、al Batteries, UL 2054.PERFORMANCE6 Pull Test6.1 An automatic hose nozzle valve shall shear or break off so as to separate the valve body from thespout when subjected to a right angle pull force of:a) Not more than 150 pounds (668 N) for a hose nozzle valve with a spout diameter less than1 inch (25.4

26、 mm) orb) Not more than 180 pounds (801 N) for a hose nozzle valve with a spout diameter of 1 inch(25.4 mm) or greater.6.2 Compliance with 6.1 is capable of being obtained by a weak section groove in the spout located notmore than 1 inch (25.4 mm) from the end of the valve body or body adapter and d

27、esigned to fracture uponapplication of the specified right angle pull force or less. To determine conformance with this requirement,the reader shall be installed as intended on the hose nozzle valve during this test. The spout portion ofthe hose nozzle valve shall be fixed at the point closest to th

28、e reader, and the specified right angle pullforce applied using a length of gasoline hose of the same size as the inlet of the hose nozzle valveattached to the test sample at the inlet end of the valve body.SEPTEMBER 28, 2012UL 1238A6UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION OR

29、DISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL6.3 Following this test, the spout shall be replaced and the valve shall be subjected to the Seat LeakageTest and External Leakage Test in accordance with the Standard for Hose Nozzle Valves, UL 2586.7 Drop Test7.1 After this test, any cracks or openings that d

30、evelop must be such that the internal circuits are notaccessible with the finger probe shown in Figure 7.1.7.2 A set of two samples of the reader are required for this test. The reader shall be installed on the hosenozzle valve it is intended for use with. The test shall be performed on one sample o

31、f the set at roomtemperature (nominal 25C or 77F) and on the second sample of the set, conditioned in a cold chamberequal to the manufacturers lower rated ambient temperature but not at a temperature higher than minus30 2C (minus 22 4F) for 24 hours. For the conditioned sample, the sample shall be r

32、emoved from thechamber prior to being subjected to the drop test. Gloves shall be worn when handling the conditionedsample to minimize heat transfer.7.3 With reference to 7.2, a different set of two samples of the reader is needed for each different hosenozzle valve to be included.7.4 The two sample

33、s are to be subjected to 4 impacts that result from being dropped onto a concretesurface in positions likely to produce the most adverse results. The height of the drop shall be 1.0 m (39.4inches). Each drop should impact a different location on the reader. If the spout breaks off during this test,t

After this test, the sample shallnot show any signs of di

36、stortion, deterioration, shrinkage, warping, softening, or any other form of damagethat would allow vapors to enter the enclosure.8.2 The sample shall be placed in an air-circulating oven at a temperature of 70C (158F). The sampleis to be conditioned in the oven for 7 hours.9 Dimensional Stability T

37、est9.1 A set of three samples of the plastic part for each test fluid shall be used for this test. Prior to theimmersion conditioning described in 9.2, the dimensions (length and diameter or thickness) of eachsample are to be determined with appropriate measuring instruments. Immediately following t

38、heimmersion conditioning for 168 1.2 hours at 23 2C (73 3.6F), and allowing the sample to dry in airfor 70 1.2 hours at 23 2C the dimensions of each sample shall be measured. The percentage changein dimensions is to be calculated as specified in the following equation for each of the three samples a

39、ndaveraged.in which:Mb is the dimension of the sample before the immersion conditioning andMa is the dimension of the sample after the immersion conditioning.9.2 Three samples shall be immersed (completely submerged) in vessels containing the applicable testfluids as shown below.a) For hose nozzle r

40、eaders intended for use with gasoline in accordance with 1.3(a), the testfluid shall be ASTM Reference Fuel C.b) For hose nozzle readers intended for use with gasoline and ethanol blends up to 10 percent(E10) in accordance with 1.3(b), the test fluids shall be ASTM Reference Fuel C and ASTMReference

41、 Fuel H.c) For hose nozzle readers intended for use with diesel fuel in accordance with 1.3(c), the testfluid shall be IRM 903 oil.9.3 At the conclusion of the test described in 9.2, the percentage change in dimension shall not changeby more than 2 percent.SEPTEMBER 28, 2012 UL 1238A 9UL COPYRIGHTED

43、d;b) A distinctive model number or the equivalent;c) The hazardous location class and group.10.2 In addition to 10.1, the applicable marking requirements in the Standard for Intrinsically SafeApparatus and Associated Apparatus for Use in Class I, II, and III, Division 1, Hazardous (Classified)Locati

44、ons, UL 913, shall be provided.10.3 When a manufacturer produces readers at more than one factory, each reader shall have adistinctive marking, to identify it as the product of a particular factory.10.4 A marking that is required to be permanent shall be molded, die-stamped, paint-stenciled, stamped

45、,etched metal that is permanently secured, indelibly applied lettering on a label secured by adhesive, or apressure sensitive label. Ordinary usage, including likely exposure to weather and other ambientconditions, handling, storage, and the like, of the equipment is considered in the determination

46、of theacceptability of the application.10.5 A pressure sensitive label or a label secured by cement or adhesive shall comply with the applicablerequirements for indoor and outdoor use labels in the Standard for Marking and Labeling Systems, UL969.11 Cautionary Markings11.1 A product having a hidden

47、or unexpected risk of injury shall be marked to inform the user of the risk.11.2 A cautionary marking shall be permanent and legible in accordance with 10.4 and 10.5, and it shallbe located on a permanent part of the product. The marking shall be visible after installation of the reader.11.3 A marki

48、ng intended to inform the user of a risk shall be prefixed by a signal word CAUTION,WARNING, or DANGER. The marking shall be in letters not less than 3/32 inch (2.4 mm) high. Thesignal word shall be more prominent than any other required marking on the product.11.4 The reader shall be marked with th
