5、ERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULINTRODUCTION1 Scope1.1 This Outline of Investigation covers requirements for the construction and performance ofnon-threaded connections when used as outlets on fire hydrants and inlets on fire department connecti

6、onsin the nominal 4 and 5 inch sizes.1.2 These non-threaded connections are intended for use:a) For hydrant pumper connections,b) To adapt from threaded hydrant pumper connections, andc) With couplings on fire department hoses that comply with the dimensions specified in theNational Fire Protection

7、Association Standard for Fire Hose Connections, NFPA 1963.2 Units of Measurement2.1 The metric unit shall be designated as the official unit for purposes of this outline. Where values ofmeasurement are specified in both SI and English units, either unit is used. In cases of dispute, the metricunit s

8、hall be used.3 Undated References3.1 Any undated reference to a code or standard appearing in the requirements of this standard shall beinterpreted as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard. Any undated reference to a code orstandard appearing in the requirements of this outline sh

9、all be interpreted as referring to the latest editionof that code or standard.CONSTRUCTION4 General4.1 A non-threaded fire hydrant or fire department connection shall be provided with a metal face andcomply with the dimensional requirements specified in the National Fire Protection Association Stand

10、ardfor Fire Hose Connections, NFPA 1963, for metal-face hydrant connections.4.2 These connections shall be able to withstand the test requirements in Performance, Section 5 and theleakage and hydrostatic test requirements in the applicable product standard Hydrants for Fire-ProtectionService, UL 246

11、 or Fire Department Connection Devices, UL 405.4.3 Caps for non-threaded fire department connections or non-threaded hydrant connections shall beprovided with suction or pressure gaskets complying with Standard for Fire Hose Connections, NFPA1963.APRIL 12, 2013UL 246A4UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUT

12、HORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL4.4 Cap assemblies for hydrants and fire department connections shall be permitted to omit locks.4.5 The cap used for a non-threaded fire department connection or a non-threaded hydrant connectionshall be provided with a means

13、 of indicating water pressure behind the cap. A hole with a diameter notless than 3.18 mm (1/8 inch) or larger than 6.35 mm (1/4 inch) located in the cap that is exposed tointernal pressure shall be permitted to indicate water pressure behind the cap.PERFORMANCE5 General5.1 Details5.1.1 Representati

14、ve samples of fire hydrants or fire department connections equipped with non-threadedconnections shall be subjected to the tests described in these requirements.5.2 Leakage and hydrostatic tests5.2.1 The leakage and hydrostatic tests shall be conducted on either a fire hydrant or fire departmentconn

15、ection in accordance with the requirements specified in Hydrants for Fire-Protection Service, UL 246and Fire Department Connection Devices, UL 405, as applicable.5.2.2 For connections intended for hydrants, the leakage and hydrostatic tests shall be conducted usingthe cap intended for the hydrant. I

16、f the cap is vented, a test cap of the same configuration, but withoutvents shall be used for these tests.5.2.3 Caps intended for fire department connections shall not be required to withstand the test pressurerequired for the leakage and hydrostatic tests. Test caps or adapters of the same seal con

17、figuration shallbe permitted to be used for this test.5.3 Assembly test5.3.1 A non-threaded connection shall be capable of maintaining structural integrity and comply with theleakage test after being assembled and disassembled 3000 times as tested in 5.3.2 and 5.3.3.5.3.2 One sample of each non-thre

18、aded connection type and size cap assembly shall be used.5.3.3 The cap shall be assembled and disassembled onto the connection 3000 times without lubrication.After the 3000 cycles, the assembly shall be subjected to the leakage and hydrostatic tests in 5.2, exceptthe test pressure shall be the press

19、ure rating of the fire hydrant or fire department connection, asapplicable. The cap shall be permitted to be replaced with an untested cap without a vent hole, whensubjected to the Leakage and hydrostatic tests.APRIL 12, 2013 UL 246A 5UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION O

20、RDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL5.4 Tensile test5.4.1 A non-threaded connection shall be capable of maintaining structural integrity and comply with theleakage test after being subjected to a tensile force equal to 1627 Nm (1200 lb-ft) times the nominaldiameter of the connection in inches.Ex

21、ception: When a non-threaded connection and cap assembly is subjected to the leakage andhydrostatic tests specified in 5.2, the tensile test shall not be required.5.4.2 Two samples of each non-threaded connection type and size cap assemblies shall be used.5.4.3 The sample shall be installed on a ten

22、sile machine and subjected to a force equal to 1627 Nm(1200 lb-ft) multiplied by the nominal diameter of the connection in inches applied at a travel rate notexceeding 2 inches per minute. After the test load is achieved, the load is to be released and the assemblyshall be subjected to the leakage a

23、nd hydrostatic tests in 5.2, except the pressure shall be the pressurerating of the fire hydrant or fire department connection, as applicable.5.5 Corrosion resistance5.5.1 A non-threaded connection manufactured from material other than material having strength andcorrosion resistance equivalent to h

24、igh-strength yellow brass No. 8A as defined in the StandardSpecification for Copper-Brass Alloys in Ingot Form, ASTM B 30, or the Standard Specification for CopperAlloy Sand Castings for General Applications, ASTM B 584, shall be capable of being assembled anddisassembled using common tools and show

25、 no signs of galvanic corrosion after being tested inaccordance with 5.5.2 5.5.4 for 120 hours.5.5.2 One sample of each non-threaded connection type and size, assembled with the required cap andthread adaptor (if used) shall be subjected to the exposure.5.5.3 The connection assembly shall be support

26、ed vertically and exposed to salt spray (fog) as specifiedby the Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Testing Apparatus, ASTM B117. The apparatusused for salt spray exposure is to consist of a fog chamber of a size and shape that result in theatomization and quantity of collected solutio

27、n within the limits of ASTM B117, having a salt solutionreservoir, a supply of conditioned compressed air, a dispersing tower for producing a salt fog, specimensupports, provision for heating the chamber, and means of control. The dispersion tower is to be locatedin the center of the chamber and is

28、to be supplied with salt solution and with warmed, humidified air at apressure of 120 to 130 kPa (17 to 19 psi), to disperse the salt solution in the form of a fine mist or fogthroughout the interior of the chamber. The temperature within the chamber is to be maintained between33 and 36C (92 and 97F

29、). Condensate accumulation on the cover of the chamber shall not drop on thetest specimens, and drops of the solution that fall from the specimens are not to be recirculated and areto be removed through a drain located in the floor of the chamber.5.5.4 The salt solution is to consist of 5 percent (b

30、y mass) of common salt (sodium chloride) and distilledwater. The pH value of this solution as collected after spraying in the test apparatus is to be between 6.5and 7.2, and the specific gravity between 1.126 and 1.157 at 35C (95F).APRIL 12, 2013UL 246A6UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FUR

31、THER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL5.6 Tests on gasket seal materials5.6.1 Tensile, elongation, and compression set5.6.1.1 An elastomeric part used to provide a gasket seal between the removable coupling parts, shallhave the following minimum tensile strength and elongation p

32、roperties after oven aging when tested asspecified in the Standard for Gaskets and Seals, UL 157:a) A minimum tensile strength after oven aging, of 80 percent of the average as receivedtensile strength;b) A minimum ultimate elongation after oven aging of 50 percent of the average as receivedelongati

33、on values; andc) A maximum compression set of 15 percent of original thickness after conditioning at 70 1C(158 1.8F) for 24 2 hours.5.6.1.2 The maximum service temperature used to determine the oven time and temperature for ovenaging is considered 60C (140F) based on an exposure temperature of 100C

34、(212F) for 70 hours.5.6.2 Low-temperature flex test5.6.2.1 An elastomeric part used to provide a gasket seal between the removable coupling parts, shallnot crack when placed into a figure 8 configuration after being conditioned as described in 5.6.2.2.5.6.2.2 Gasket seals shall be conditioned at min

35、us 18 1C (0 2F) for a period of 24 hours followed byconditioning at minus 32 1C (minus 26 2F) for a period of 2 hours. Immediately after conditioning thegasket seal shall be flexed by squeezing any two opposite points into a figure 8 configuration.5.7 Vacuum test5.7.1 A non-threaded connection incor

36、porating a cap with a suction gasket shall be capable ofmaintaining a vacuum of 74.2 kPa (22 inches Hg) for 5 minutes when subjected to the test in 5.7.2.5.7.2 The cap shall be assembled onto the non-threaded connection, and the assembly connected to avacuum pump. The assembly shall be subjected to

37、a vacuum pressure of 74.2 kPa (22 inches Hg),disconnected from the pump, and the pressure held for 5 minutes. 38、TION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL5.8 Force to connect and disconnect5.8.1 A cap equipped with a pressure gasket shall be capable of connection and disconnection to boththe Type A and the Type B metal-face test gauges at a force of between 0.68 N m (6.0 lbf in.) and3.4 N m (30 lb in.) wh

39、en measured as described in 5.8.3. A cap fitted with a suction gasket for a shallbe capable of connection and disconnection to both the Type A and the Type B metal-face test gaugesat a force of between 19.0 N m (168 lb in.) and35.3 N m (312 lb in.) when measured as describedin 5.8.3.5.8.2 One sample

40、 of each size cap, assembled with clean, but with non-lubricated gaskets shall be usedmounted on the applicable test gauge and the equipment secured and conditioned at 21 18C (7010F). The gauge and cap shall be positioned to turn freely, without constraint or binding. A test wrenchconstructed with d

41、imensions described in the Standard for Fire Hose Connections, NFPA 1963, Figure6.5.3.2(a) shall be attached over the external lugs of the connector being tested. For 125 mm (5 inch)connectors, a test wrench with dimensions as shown in the Standard for Fire Hose Connections, NFPA1963, Figure 6.5.3.2

42、(b) shall be attached over the external lugs of the connection to be tested.5.8.3 A calibrated torque wrench shall be attached in direct line with the center of the cap to the testwrench and the locks held open when the connection is being moved in the disconnect direction. Thewrench shall be rotate

43、d in the direction necessary to connect, and then disconnect the cap being testedand the maximum torque in each direction is to be recorded.5.9 10-day moist ammonia air stress cracking test5.9.1 After being subjected to the tests and conditions described in 5.9.2 5.9.4, brass non-threadedconnections

44、 and thread adapters containing more than 15 percent zinc when examined using 25Xmagnification shall:a) Show no evidence of cracking; orb) Comply with the leakage and hydrostatic tests in 5.2, if there is evidence of cracking.5.9.2 Each test sample is to be subjected to the physical stresses normall

45、y imposed on or within a partas the result of assembly with other components. Such stresses are to be applied to the sample prior toand maintained during the test. Samples with threads, intended to be used for installing the product in thefield, are to have the threads engaged and tightened to the t

46、orque specified in Table 5.9. The samples are to be positioned 38.1 mm (1-1/2inches) above the aqueous ammonia solution and supported by an inert tray. The moist ammonia-airm

49、ixture in the chamber is to be maintained at atmospheric pressure and at a temperature of 34C (93F).MARKING6 General6.1 Marking on the fire hydrant and fire department connection shall be in accordance with Hydrants forFire-Protection Service, UL 246 and Fire Department Connection Devices, UL 405, respectively.
