7、 oil-fired boilers, furnaces, and water heaters, to line the combustionchamber or serve as insulating material.1.2 The combustion chamber liners are intended as a component of the fuel-burning end productequipment and are subject to the requirements of the applicable end product safety standard.2 Co

8、mponents2.1 Except as indicated in 2.2, a component of a product covered by this Outline of Investigation shallcomply with the requirements for that component.2.2 A component is not required to comply with a specific requirement that:a) Involves a feature or characteristic not required in the applic

9、ation of the component in theproduct covered by this outline, orb) Is superseded by a requirement in this outline.2.3 A component shall be used in accordance with its rating established for the intended conditions ofuse.2.4 Specific components are incomplete in construction features or restricted in

10、 performance capabilities.Such components are intended for use only under limited conditions, such as certain temperatures notexceeding specified limits, and shall be used only under those specific conditions.3 Units of Measurement3.1 Values stated without parentheses are the requirement. 12、e shall beinterpreted as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard.5 Glossary5.1 For the purpose of this Outline the following definitions apply.5.2 COMBUSTION CHAMBER The portion of a fuel-burning heating appliance within whichcombustion of the specified fuel occurs.5.3 COMPRESSION J

13、OINT A method of joining two items utilizing compressive force with binding toprevent separation.5.4 FUEL OIL Any hydrocarbon oil as defined by the Specification for Fuel Oils, ANSI/ASTM D396.5.5 GAS Any hydrocarbon gases as defined by the National Fuel Gas Code, NFPA 545.6 LAP JOINT An overlap meth

14、od of joining two items resulting in double thickness of the material.5.7 REFRACTORY Material that once formed and subject to a curing process, is difficult to melt orreform and resistant to heat.CONSTRUCTION6 General6.1 Means shall be provided to secure the liner material as its intended within the

15、 combustion chamber.Such means shall be suitable for the temperatures involved and be readily field replaceable. The linershall maintain sufficient inherent rigidity to maintain shape and its intended position within the combustionchamber, during the applications of the tests specified by this Outli

16、ne of Investigation.6.2 If compression joints are utilized in the construction of the combustion chamber liner, the liner materialshall be under sufficient compression to maintain shape and its intended position within the combustionchamber, during the applications of the tests specified by this Out

17、line of Investigation.6.3 If lap joints are utilized, a minimum overlap of 3/8 inch (1 cm) at all joints is required.6.4 The overall dimensions of the combustion chamber liner shall permit replacement in the field. In theapplication of replacement or installation, it shall not be necessary to bend t

18、he liner in a manner that wouldbe damaging to the material.6.5 The use of insulating fill material between surfaces of the combustion chamber liner material andsurface of the combustion chamber are not permitted.JANUARY 31, 2008 SUBJECT 2576 5UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPROD

19、UCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL6.6 At the conclusion of each Test specified in this Outline of Investigation, an examination of thecombustion chamber liner material shall be conducted to determine there is no evidence of deteriorationor any condition that would hinder the performanc

20、e of the liner.PERFORMANCE7 General7.1 Combustion burners utilized on the test appliance shall be rated at the maximum fuel input for whichthe combustion chamber liner is to be rated.7.2 During the tests specified herein, the refractory combustion chamber liner shall maintain its rigidity asit is in

21、tended during normal use.8 Identification Test8.1 The density of the material of the refractory combustion chamber liner shall be determined anddocumented. The tests shall be conducted at an ambient temperature of 77 5F (25 2C). and atatmospheric pressure.8.2 Representative samples of the material s

22、hall be measured and weighed. The density of the materialshall be calculated as the weight per unit volume.8.3 Representative samples are considered equivalent when the alumina and silica concentration iswithin five percent.9 Ignition Test9.1 Three representative samples of the refractory combustion

23、 chamber liner material are to beconditioned to a constant weight at 221 5F (105 2C).9.2 The conditioned samples, as specified in 9.1, are to be heated for 48 hours at maximum ratedtemperature of the refractory combustion chamber liner in a high temperature furnace. After the 48 hourheating period,

24、the samples are to be cooled in a desiccator and then weighed.9.3 The percent gain/loss in weight shall not be more than ten percent of the original (as received) samplematerial.9.4 Observation of each specimen should not show any disintegration or noticeable loss of structuralstrength.JANUARY 31, 2

26、2C).10.2 The conditioned samples, as specified in 10.1, are to be exposed to air, saturated with distilled watervapors, at 104 5F (40 2C) in a glass test chamber for a period of 10 days. After the 10 day exposureperiod, the samples of the refractory combustion chamber liner material are to be condit

27、ioned to aconstant weight at 221 5F (105 2C).10.3 After drying, the samples are to be cooled in a desiccator and then weighed.10.4 The percent gain/loss in weight shall not be more than ten percent of the original (as received)sample material.10.5 Observation of each specimen should not show any dis

28、integration or noticeable loss of structuralstrength.11 Operation Test11.1 A representative sample of the refractory combustion chamber liner shall be installed within a typicalappliance per manufacturers instructions.11.2 The burner of the appliances shall be operated intermittently, 10 minutes “on

29、” and 10 minutes “off”.The duration of the test is to be that required to obtain conclusive performance data, and is expected tobe until the burner has been fired for 250 hours.11.3 During the test period, daily observations and recordings are to be made of the condition of therefractory combustion

30、chamber liner.11.4 Observation of each specimen should not show any disintegration or noticeable loss of structuralstrength.12 Oil Saturation Test12.1 A representative sample of the refractory combustion chamber liner material shall be installed in anopen drum. The open drum shall be sized according

31、ly to the oil burner selected, in accordance with 7.1,and properly vented to the outdoors.12.2 The material shall be saturated with the burner fuel oil utilizing the oil burner operation with theignition system deenergized. The material shall be considered saturated when the material is thoroughlyso

32、aked with fuel and at the point just before fuel begins to pool in the bottom of the drum.12.3 At the completion of the fuel oil saturation, as described in 12.2, the burner ignition means shall bereenergized and the burner allowed to fire into the open drum for a period of one minute and then shall

33、be shut down for one minute. 34、egradation or effectthat would hinder the performance of the liner.12.5 Observation of each specimen should not show any disintegration or noticeable loss of structuralstrength.13 Water Saturation Test13.1 A representative sample of the refractory combustion chamber liner material shall be installed

35、 in anopen drum. The open drum shall be sized accordingly to the burner selected, in accordance with 7.1, andproperly vented to the outdoors.13.2 The material shall be saturated with water. The material shall be considered saturated when thematerial is thoroughly soaked with water and at the point j

36、ust before water begins to pool in the bottom ofthe drum.13.3 At the completion of the water saturation, as described in 13.2, the burner shall be allowed to fireinto the refractory combustion chamber liner for 30 minutes.13.4 The refractory combustion chamber liner material shall not exhibit notice

37、able degradation or effectthat would hinder the performance of the liner.13.5 Observation of each specimen should not show any disintegration or noticeable loss of structuralstrength.14 Flame Impingement Test14.1 A representative sample of the refractory combustion chamber liner material shall be in

38、stalled in anopen drum. The open drum shall be sized accordingly to the burner selected, in accordance with 7.1, andproperly vented to the outdoors.14.2 The burner shall be allowed to fire and the flame shall be directed to allow abnormally close flameimpingement of the refractory combustion chamber

39、 liner for one hour. Impingement is defined as amajority of the flame cone being in contact with the liner material. After the one hour duration ofimpingement, the burner shall be redirected to allow normal operation within the combustion chamber forone hour.14.3 The refractory combustion chamber li

41、REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULMANUFACTURING AND PRODUCTION TESTS15 General15.1 To determine compliance with these requirements in production, the manufacturer of the refractoryliner material shall check and inspect the formulation.15.2 Factory inspections shall include the fo

42、llowing:a) Inspection of all raw materials;b) Inspection of the refractory combustion chamber liner to determine compliance withmanufacturing specifications;MARKING16 General16.1 The refractory combustion chamber liner or shipping container shall be plainly marked with thefollowing information:a) Th

43、e name of the manufacturer or the trademark; a distinctive catalog number or theequivalent; the date of manufacture; and a factory identifier, if the product is manufactured atmore than one location. The date and factory identifier may be in code;b) The types of appliances and/or fuels that may be f

44、ired with the refractory combustionchamber liner; andc) The thickness and density of the refractory combustion chamber liner.16.2 For cautionary markings, signal words (DANGER,WARNING, and CAUTION) shall be printedin letters not less than 7/64 inch (2.8 mm) high and the remainder of the notice shall

45、 be printed in lettersnot less than 3/32 inch (2.4 mm) high. Markings shall be located so as to be readily visible duringinstallation and/or replacement of the liner material and servicing of the combustion chamber.16.3 The exterior surface of each Refractory Combustion Chamber Liner shall be perman

46、ently markedwith the statement CAUTION and the following or equivalent statement, “Care should be taken duringcleaning or servicing of the appliance to prevent damage to the refractory combustion chamber linermaterial.”JANUARY 31, 2008 SUBJECT 2576 9UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER

47、 REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULINSTRUCTIONS17 General17.1 A copy of the manufacturers installation instructions intended to accompany each refractorycombustion chamber liner, as produced, is to be used as a guide in the examination and test of theproduct.17.2 The instructions

48、 shall include such directions and information as deemed by the manufacturer to benecessary to cover the intended installation, maintenance, and use of the product. Instructions shallinclude at least the following:a) Name and address of the manufacturer;b) Catalog number or other equivalent designat

49、ion;c) Statement that installation is to be performed by a qualified installer and will comply with allthe requirements of the authority having jurisdiction over the appliance installation;d) Detailed instructions on maintenance and service procedures of the liner;e) A general arrangement drawing illustrating method of mounting/installation; andf) Repetition of all cautionary markings (see 16.1).JANUARY 31, 2008SUBJECT 257610
