9、ITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULINTRODUCTION1 Scope1.1 This outline of investigation covers electrically operated attic lifts for use only by non-mobility impairedpersons. This outline of investigation does not cover attic lifts utilizing hydraulic driving means.1.2 This outline of investigation is intende
10、d for attic lifts operating from a voltage of 600 volts or less thatwill be installed in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70 and the InternationalResidential Code only by persons trained by the attic lift manufacturer.1.3 This outline of investigation covers attic lifts intended to
11、 carry a single person or a load from theuppermost story of a one or two family residence or residential garage to an uninhabited attic, where theassembly penetrates only the floor of the attic and the ceiling of the uppermost story or garage.1.4 Vertical platform lifts intended for transportation o
12、f mobility impaired persons are covered by theSafety Standard for Platform Lifts and Stairway Chairlifts, ASME A18.1.1.5 Vertical platform lifts used exclusively for carrying materials between two or more landings(dumbwaiters) are covered by the Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, ASME A17.1/C
13、SA B44.2 Glossary2.1 ATTENDANT CONTROL Controls that are not physically located on the platform.2.2 ATTIC An unfurnished and uninhabited space directly between the roof and uppermost story of aresidence.2.3 ATTIC ATTENDANT CONTROL Attendant controls physically located in the attic.2.4 GUIDE RAILS Pa
14、rts of an attic lift that maintain the platform in its intended position through itsintended motion during operation. Guide rails may be part of the suspension and support means as wellas provide protection from the driving machine. Guide rails may be a single column.2.5 NON-RETRACTABLE LIFT An elec
15、trically operated attic lift in which the attic lift guide rail, runway,beams, supports, and other framework (as applicable) are permanently installed in the uppermost story ofthe residence or garage.2.6 PLATFORM CONTROL Controls for the platform that are physically located on the platform,intended
16、to be used only by the person on the platform during its operation.2.7 RESIDENCE ATTENDANT CONTROL Attendant controls physically located in the uppermost story.2.8 RETRACTABLE LIFT An electrically operated attic lift in which the attic lift platform, guide rail,runway, beams, supports, and other fra

For attic lifts installed in residential garages, the garage is considered the uppermost story,although it may not be furnished or inhabited.3 Units of Mea

24、or a liquid or gas that, if discharged, could cause bodilyharm or impair the proper electrical function of the lift.7.2 Minimum Clearance7.2.1 There shall be a minimum clearance of 2000 mm (79 in.) measured vertically from the platform toany member of the attic lift or building structure which does
25、not move concurrently with and in the samedirect as the platform.7.3 Guarding of the runway of a non-retractable lift7.3.1 The runway shall not be enclosed and guarding shall comply with section 2.1.3 or 5.1.1 of ASMEA18.1 with the following exceptions or additions.7.3.2 The runway shall penetrate o
26、nly the ceiling of the uppermost story and the floor of the attic. It shallnot extend below the uppermost story.7.3.3 A door on the upper landing (the attic) per 2.1.3.1 and 5.1.1.1 of ASME A18.1 is not required.7.3.4 Clause 5.1.1.2 of ASME A18.1 applies, but a smooth vertical fascia is only require
27、d over the fullwidth of any part of the lift that moves relative to and during the operation of the platform. A device to stopthe platform if an object protrudes from platform within a manufacturer specified distance of the openingin the floor of the attic is required. The specified distance shall b
28、e at least the required stopping distancefor the lift at rated speed and load in the descending motion and at rated speed and no load in theascending motion. See 19.2 for test.7.3.5 A grab rail per 2.1.3.5 of ASME A18.1 is not required.7.3.6 A guard per 5.1.1.3 of ASME A18.1 is not required.7.3.7 Ru

31、ms, and other platform support members shallcomply with 7.4.3 or 7.4.4.7.4.3 Guarding of the underside of the motor driven retractable guide rail, runway, beams, and otherplatform support members shall be provided by one of the methods described in clause 5.1.1.7.1 or5.1.1.7.3 of ASME A18.1. See 19.
32、3 or 19.5 for test.7.4.4 The motion of retractable components of the attic lift shall not exceed a speed of 0.3 m/s (1 ft/s).See 19.6 for test. The lift shall emit an audible alarm while the motor driven retractable guide rail, runway,beams, and other platform support members are being lowered into
33、position. 37、ces and control equipment shall comply with clause 5.10 of ASME A18.1 with thefollowing additions or exceptions.16.1.2 Operation controls of the platform shall be provided on the platform, be of the continuous pressuretype, and include two separate and independent devices of continuous pressure cont
38、rol such thatoperation of the lift can only be accomplished by simultaneous, continuous pressure operation of bothdevices. The controls shall be designed such that the “Up” and “Down” circuits cannot be operated at thesame time.16.1.3 The operation controls on the platform shall be placed at a minim
39、um of 240 mm (9.5 in) apart orwith a barrier between them such that the shortest measured distance around the barrier is a minimum of240 mm (9.5 in). They shall be at a height of no less than 914 mm (36 in) and no more than 1332 mm(52 in).16.1.4 Platform operation controls may additionally be provid
40、ed as attendant operation in compliance with16.2.16.1.5 A retractable attic lift shall be provided with attendant operation in compliance with 16.1.2. Theretractable guide rail, runway, beams, and other platform support members of the lift shall only becontrolled by the attendant control devices.DEC

42、2 mm (52 in) and where the attendant operator has a full view of thearea under the attic lift. See 22.3 for installation instruction requirement.16.2.2 Where platform operation is provided as attendant operation, locking means shall be provided onboth the attendant and platform operating devices whi
43、ch, when locked, will defeat both the platform andattendant operating devices.16.2.3 Where both attendant and platform operation is provided, the driving machine brake is required tooperate when both attendant and platform operation controls are in the “STOP” position. See 19.11 fortest.16.2.4 The “
44、Up” and “Down” controls of the platform shall always take precedence over the “Up” and“Down” and “Stop” controls of the attendant operation. See 19.11 for test.16.2.5 Residence attendant control shall be provided for the retractable parts of a retractable attic lift.Attic attendant control shall not
45、 be provided for the retractable parts of a retractable attic lift protected onlyby the means of clause 7.4.4. This clause does not preclude the use of attic attendant controls for theplatform of a retractable attic lift and also does not preclude the use of attic attendant controls forretractable p
46、arts of a retractable attic lift protected by the means of clause 7.4.3.17 Structural Load17.1 The attic lift shall be designed to impose a structural load not exceeding 147 kg per square meter(30 pounds per square foot).18 Engineering Design Requirements18.1 The applicable parts of the lift shall c
47、omply with section 9.1 9.5, 9.7, and 9.8 of ASME A18.1.PERFORMANCE19 General19.1 General19.1.1 An attic lift shall be installed per its installation instructions and subjected to the applicableEngineering Type Tests of ASME A18.1 in addition to the following tests.DECEMBER 5, 2014UL 288910UL COPYRIG

An object no more than 12 mm (0.5 i
49、n.) wide shall be placed in the middle ofa side of the platform at any height and extend beyond the platform horizontally by at least the distancefrom the outside of the platform to the design opening in the attic floor. The lift shall then be operated atmaximum rated speed in the descending motion. The test shall be repeated with the object placed in themiddle of each side and corner of the platform.19.2.2 With the platform in its lowermost position, the platform shall be unloaded with the exception of anobject no more than 12 mm (0.5 in.) wide in the middle
