9、overs mineral-insulated (Type MI) metal-sheathed cable, which consistsof one or more solid copper conductors insulated with highly compressed magnesium oxide and enclosedin a continuous copper or alloy steel sheath, with or without a nonmetallic jacket.1.2 Cables rated 600 V may be composed of 16 AW

10、G to 500 kcmil single conductor, 16 to 4 AWG twoand three conductor, 16 to 6 AWG four conductor, and 16 to 10 AWG seven conductor constructions.Cables rated 300 V may be composed of two, three, four and seven conductor, sizes 18 to 16 AWG, foruse on signaling circuits.1.3 The copper sheath is suitab

11、le as an equipment grounding conductor. For cable with alloy steel outersheath one of the insulated conductors is to be used for equipment grounding.1.4 The cable shall be installed in accordance with Article 332 of National Electrical Code, NFPA 702 Units of Measurement2.1 The unit of measure shall

12、 be SI. If a value for measurement is followed by a value in other units inparentheses, the second value represents a direct conversion or an alternative value.3 Undated References3.1 Any undated reference to a code or standard appearing in the requirements of this Outline shall beinterpreted as ref

13、erring to the latest edition of that code or standard.3.2 Wherever the designation UL 1581 is used in this cable Outline, reference is to be made to thedesignated part(s) of the Reference Standard for Electrical Wires, Cables, and Flexible Cords, UL 1581.Whenever the designation UL 2556 is used in t

14、his standard, reference is to be made to the designatedparts of the Wire and Cable Test Methods, UL 2556.CONSTRUCTION4 Materials4.1 Only materials that are acceptable for the particular use shall be employed in a cable.4.2 Each material used in a cable shall be compatible with all of the other mater

16、ndard Specification for Soft orAnnealed Copper Wire, ASTM B3.5.3 Nickel-clad copper conductors shall comply with the requirements of Standard Specification forNickel-Coated Soft or Annealed Copper Wire, ASTM B355.5.4 Nickel conductors shall comply with the requirements of Standard Specification for

17、Nickel Rod andBar, ASTM B1606 Insulation6.1 The insulation shall consist of highly compressed, powdered magnesium oxide.6.2 The minimum insulation thickness between conductors and between conductors and sheath(s) shallbe 0.055 inches.6.3 Compliance with 6.2 shall be determined in accordance with the

18、 method described in 6.3.1 6.3.4.6.3.1 The end of one specimen shall be filed smooth. The end of the specimen shall be fliedperpendicular to the length of the specimen (right-circular cylinder).6.3.2 The mineral insulation shall be carefully removed from the filed end of the specimen to a depth ofat

19、 least 0.01 inches without disturbing the position of the conductors within the cable.6.3.3 A steel gauge shall be inserted between adjacent conductors and between the conductors and thesheath.6.3.4 A steel gauge of 0.054 inches shall pass between adjacent conductors and between the conductorsand th

29、have an overall covering meeting the requirements of Overall NonmetallicCovering, Section 8.PERFORMANCE10 Continuity Test of Conductors10.1 All of the conductors in the finished cable shall be continuous throughout the entire length of thecable.10.2 Compliance with 10.1 shall be determined in accord

30、ance with the method Continuity, as describedin UL 2556.11 Dielectric Strength Test11.1 The finished cable shall withstand for 1 minute, without breakdown, a dielectric voltage of 1600V for300V rated cables, or 2200 V for 600V rated cables. The voltage shall be applied for 5 minutes.11.2 The test vo

31、ltage shall be applied between conductors and between the conductors an the metallicsheath.11.3 Compliance shall be in accordance with the test, Dielectric voltage-withstand, Method 2 (in air) in UL2556.12 Insulation Resistance12.1 Immediately after the Dielectric Strength Test, Section 11, and usin

32、g the same samples, the cableshall have an insulation resistance of not less than 5000 M 1000 ft. for sizes 18 4 AWG and 3500M 1000 ft. for sizes 3 AWG 500 kcmil. The insulation resistance shall be measured between theconductor and the sheath. In the case of multiple conductor constructions, the ins

36、rdance with the method DC resistance asdescribed in UL 2556.14 Flexibility Test14.1 The cable shall withstand a dielectric potential as indicated in DC Resistance of Conductors, Section13 for one minute when subjected to the procedure described in 14.2 14.3.14.2 A specimen of finished cable 0.75 inc

37、hes in diameter or less shall be bent in a U-bend around amandrel having a diameter five times that of the overall cable. For cables larger than 0.75 inches, thecable shall be bent in a U-bend around a mandrel ten times the diameter of the cable. With the cable stillin the bent position, a potential

39、OUT PERMISSION FROM UL15 Test for Durability of Ink Printing15.1 Surface-printed markers shall be complete and legible after two samples have been tested inaccordance with the test, Durability of ink printing, in UL 2556.15.2 For surface print on the metallic sheath, one sample shall be conditioned

40、at 121C for 168 hours.15.3 For surface print on the nonmetallic covering, one specimen shall be conditioned for the same timeand temperature as for the covering material. See Table 8.1.16 Cable Flame Test (Required for Cables with a Nonmetallic Covering)16.1 A vertical specimen of finished cable hav

48、Sunlight-Resistance Test (Optional for Cables with a Nonmetallic Covering, Required forCables with a Nonmetallic Sheath Suitable for Use Outdoors)21.1 Finished cable whose overall nonmetallic covering is marked to indicate that the cable is suitable foruse in sunlight is to be considered acceptable

49、for sunlight-resistant use if after conditioning for 720 hoursin a xenon arc weatherometer as described in the test, Weather (sunlight) resistance, in UL 2556, thejacket retains an average tensile strength and elongation of not less than 80 percent. Conditioned andunaged sets (five specimens each) shall be allowed to rest 16 hours to 96 hours at room temperature,followed by physical properties testing.22 Crushing Test (Optional for Cables with a Nonmetallic C
