Scope*1.1 This specification covers solid, dry-cast, concrete facingbrick intended for interior and exterior use in constructingstructural and facing masonry components a

3、nd are made fromportland cement, water, and suitable mineral aggregates with orwithout the inclusion of other materials.NOTE 1Specification C55 addresses concrete building brick used innon-facing, utilitarian applications (previously referred to in earliereditions of Specification C55 as Grade Sfor

4、general use where moderatestrength and resistance to frost action and moisture penetration arerequired). This specification differs from Specification C55 in that itincludes expanded consideration for properties of concrete brick used infacing applications and other exposures (previously referred to

5、 in earliereditions of Specification C55 as Grade Nfor use as architectural veneerand facing units in exterior walls and for use where high strength andresistance to moisture penetration and severe frost action are desired).1.2 The text of this specification references notes andfootnotes which provi

6、de explanatory material. These notes andfootnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not beconsidered as requirements of the standard.1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are p

Terminology3.1 Terminology defined in Terminology C1232 shall applyfor this specification.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 concrete building brick, na concrete masonry unit,with a maximum width

13、 of four (4) inches and of a weight thatwill typically permit it to be lifted and placed with one hand,that is manufactured for general use in non-facing, utilitarianapplications.3.2.2 concrete facing brick, na concrete masonry unit,with a maximum width of four (4) inches and of a weight thatwill ty

14、pically permit it to be lifted and placed with one hand,that is manufactured to be typically used in an applicationwhere one or more faces of the unit is intended to be exposed.4. Materials and Manufacture4.1 Cementitious MaterialsMaterials shall conform to thefollowing applicable specifications:4.1

22、hall be previously established as suitable foruse in concrete masonry units and shall conform to applicableASTM standards or shall be shown by test or experience not tobe detrimental to the durability of the concrete masonry unitsor any material customarily used in masonry construction.5. Physical R

23、equirements5.1 At the time of delivery to the purchaser, units shallconform to the physical requirements prescribed in Table 1.5.1.1 When higher compressive strengths than those listedin Table 1 are specified, the tested average net area compres-sive strength of three units shall equal or exceed the

24、 specifiedcompressive strength, and the following single unit strengthrequirements shall apply.5.1.1.1 When the specified compressive strength is less than5000 psi, no single unit net area compressive strength testresult shall be less than the specified compressive strengthminus 500 psi. Compressive

25、 strength shall be tested in accor-dance with 8.2.5.1.1.2 When the specified compressive strength is 5000 psior greater, no single unit net area compressive strength testresult shall be less than 90 % of the specified compressivestrength. Compressive strength shall be tested in accordancewith 8.2.5.

26、2 At the time of delivery to the purchaser, the averagetotal linear drying shrinkage of the three units tested shall notexceed 0.065 % when tested in accordance with 8.3.NOTE 4The purchaser is the public body or authority, association,corporation, partnership, or individual entering into a contract

27、or agree-ment to purchase or install, or both, concrete facing brick. The time ofdelivery to the purchaser is FOB plant when the purchaser or thepurchasers agent transports the concrete facing brick, or at the timeunloaded at the worksite if the manufacturer or the manufacturers agenttransports the

28、concrete facing brick.6. Dimensions, Mass, and Permissible Variations6.1 No overall dimension (width, height, and length) shalldiffer by more than 618 in. (3.2 mm) from the specifiedstandard dimensions.NOTE 5Standard dimensions of concrete facing brick are the manu-facturers designated dimensions. N

29、ominal dimensions of modular sizeconcrete facing brick are equal to the standard dimensions plus thethickness of one mortar joint. Nominal dimensions of nonmodular sizeconcrete facing brick usually exceed the standard dimensions by18 to14in. (3.2 to 6.4 mm).6.1.1 For those units with faces altered f

30、or aestheticpurposes, overall dimensional tolerances apply only to thosedimensions not affected by the altering.NOTE 6For such units, dimensions will vary. Consult with suppliers todetermine achievable dimensional tolerances.6.2 For cored concrete facing brick, the net cross-sectionalarea in any pla

31、ne parallel to the surface containing the coresshall be at least 75 % of the gross cross-sectional areameasured in the same plane. No part of any hole shall be lessthan34 in. (19.1 mm) from any edge of the unit.7. Finish and Appearance7.1 All units shall be sound and free of cracks or otherdefects t

32、hat interfere with the proper placement of the units orsignificantly impair the strength or permanence of the construc-tion. Minor cracks incidental to the usual method of manufac-ture or minor chipping resulting from customary methods ofhandling in shipment and delivery are not grounds for rejec-ti

33、on.7.2 Where units are to be used in exposed wall construction,the faces shall not show chips or cracks not otherwisepermitted or other imperfections when viewed from a distanceof not less than 20 ft (6.1 m) under diffused lighting.7.2.1 Five percent of a shipment containing chips, not largerthan12

34、in. (12.7 mm) in any dimension, or cracks not widerthan 0.02 in. (0.5 mm) and not longer than 25 % of the nominalheight of the unit, is permitted.7.3 The color and texture shall be specified by the purchaser.The exposed faces shall conform to an approved sampleconsisting of not less than four units,

Methods of Sampling and Testing8.1 The purchaser or authorized representative shall beaccorded proper facilities to inspect and sample the concretefacing brick at the place of manufactu

38、re from the lots ready fordelivery.8.2 Compressive strength, absorption, density, and dimen-sional tolerances shall be based on tests of concrete facingbrick of any configuration or dimensions made with the samematerials, concrete mix design, manufacturing process, andcuring method, conducted in acc

39、ordance with Test MethodsC140 and not more than 12 months prior to delivery.8.3 Total linear drying shrinkage shall be based on tests ofconcrete facing brick of any configuration or dimensions madewith the same materials, concrete mix design, manufacturingprocess, and curing method, conducted in acc

40、ordance with TestMethod C426 and not more than 24 months prior to delivery.9. Compliance9.1 If a sample fails to conform to the specified physicalrequirements, the manufacturer shall be permitted to removeunits from the shipment. A new sample shall be selected by thepurchaser from remaining units fr

41、om the shipment with asimilar configuration and dimension and tested at the expenseof the manufacturer. If the second sample meets the specifiedphysical requirements, the remaining portion of the shipmentrepresented by the sample meets the specified physical require-ments. If the second sample fails

42、 to meet the specified physicalrequirements, the remaining portion of the shipment repre-sented by the sample fails to meet the specified physicalrequirements.NOTE 7Unless otherwise specified in the purchase order, the costs oftests is typically borne as follows: (1) if the results of the tests show

43、 thatthe units do not conform to the requirements of this specification, the costis typically borne by the seller; (2) if the results of the tests show that theunits conform to the specification requirements, the cost is typically borneby the purchaser.10.
